Creator Spotlight - SkinnedTeen

A fun but fearsome captain sails this way to share her Sea of Thieves adventures!

In our latest Creator Spotlight we have a fearsomely fun captain, but one who is not to be trifled with: it’s SkinnedTeen! We asked her some questions about her Voyages across the seas so far, and what experiences those travels have brought her.

[Q]: What was your introduction to the world of games?

[A]: So before this gets awkward, I have to clear the air: despite ‘teen’ being in my name, I’m in my 30s. Now that THAT IS DONE... my introduction to the gaming world actually comes from my father, who had a Commodore 64 when I was a kid – I’m talking 4-5 years old. He would teach me to load up games like BurgerTime and Pole Position on it. Not long after, friends I’d made as a kid had a new thing (at the time) called Nintendo, and by the time I was around six years old, we got one of those too.

[Q]: How did you become part of the Sea of Thieves community?

[A]: Initially, I recall seeing the announcement for Sea of Thieves at E3, and I played it at launch. I wasn’t sure how I felt about streaming the game at first, but it didn’t stop me from continuing to play the game off-stream. Eventually, I learned a lot of people who are in my community also play the game religiously, and we all just started to play together, and I started to stream it on a more regular basis.

[Q]: How did creating content become your ‘thing’?

[A]: When I started streaming, I was working as a video editor and graphic designer full-time. Streaming became something I did as a hobby, and as a challenge, to complete games I had in my backlog – I had a problem of buying games and playing about 20% of them before moving on. Streaming was my way of fixing that issue. The stream eventually, and unexpectedly, took off, and now this is my full-time job!

[Q]: How do you decide what kind of content to create?

[A]: I knew that I wanted to stick to variety, because I know that I enjoy too many varied types of games to stick to one specifically. I also knew that, while I’m not particularly skilled at any of the games I choose to play, I have a knack for not only getting into funny situations, but spinning situations into funny ones.

[Q]: What are some of the challenges you’ve faced while creating content?

[A]: Some of the biggest challenges I’ve faced are usually relative to something outside of the stream, and usually solved with a little bit of time to work through whatever it is that’s become a challenge.

[Q]: What different channels do you have?

[A]: I have a Twitch channel, and a YouTube one – the Twitch channel is the main source of content, while YouTube is mostly for highlights and VODs.

[Q]: What’s been your most memorable Sea of Thieves moment so far?

[A]: One night, my crew and I were getting ready to wrap up for the night when we sailed past a Fort and saw something shiny on a rock. Two of us hopped off the Galleon to investigate, and discovered that the Fort was empty, but had been completed. Upon further inspection, it appeared as though the crew that had cleared the Fort had accidentally blown themselves up with the Stronghold Barrel, taking out their ship in the process, and consequently leaving the entire Fort open and its riches exposed.

We all freaked out and started to take everything, but as we were wrapping up the crew who cleared the Fort returned. One of our crew sailed out with a Rowboat to distract them, while the rest of us slipped away on the Galleon with all of the riches. There was no fight, and I’m not sure they even know what happened to their stuff. To this day, we still refer to this as “the heist” – it was one of the craziest things that ever happened.

[Q]: What do you enjoy most about the game now, and what are you looking forward to in future?

[A]: I have always enjoyed Sea of Thieves for the personal stories that come out of it, how unique they are to almost everyone, and how even the negative experiences often end up being positive memories. When I first started playing, I was a little upset with how the game sort of forced me into PvP – now I absolutely love the sense of danger that comes from the possibility of it coming. No two encounters are ever really the same.

I look forward to the continued expansion of storylines and content. As a mostly PvE-centric gamer, I absolutely love the Tall Tales, and the other varied types of content the game provides.

[Q]: What’s something you’re particularly proud of accomplishing in gaming?

[A]: If we’re talking about Sea of Thieves specifically... I managed to sail a Rowboat from like... Lone Cove to Reaper’s Hideout, because I somehow got my Sloop stuck on land and it disintegrated, and I had two chests I refused to give up. It was a journey. If we’re talking about gaming in general, I’m... not sure, haha.

[Q]: How did you come up with your channel name?

[A]: I have a long-standing habit of creating usernames out of horror movies or references, or heavy band names and references. I’m a fan of both those things. Anyway, I created this name on Twitch with no intention of streaming, but when I decided to finally pull the trigger years later, I asked a friend if I should keep the name or use another one. She said: “Keep it, it sounds metal”. So I did, and here we are!

[Q]: What advice would you give to a new content creator?

[A]: Do the things that entertain YOU the most. If you’re phoning in your enjoyment, people can tell, and it resonates. Also, always push the boundaries of your own creativity.

[Q]: What’s one thing you would advise a content creator not to do?

[A]: Do not take advice from Twitter :)

[Q]: Could you give us one more random fact about yourself?

[A]: I played the trumpet in junior high school; I was the ‘first chair’ in band.
