Creator Spotlight - CocoMayy

Scratching your head over why your Cargo Runs always seem to end with crates full of shrivelled plants? Not a problem for the subject of our latest Creator Spotlight, as we sit down with the botanist buccaneer CocoMayy! Tag along with us as we cross the world to New Zealand to learn more about CocoMayy’s journey into Sea of Thieves and content creation.

[Q]: What was your introduction to the world of games?

[A]: Probably my older brother, he was always into games and showed me most of the ones I grew up playing, and is probably the reason I have such a competitive nature when it comes to gaming. When I was younger I had a Game Boy and also various PlayStation consoles. The first PC games I remember really getting into were RuneScape and Minecraft.

I definitely think that I'm drawn to games that are aesthetically very beautiful because games are really a form of artwork as well as entertainment, which is part of the reason I love Sea of Thieves so much.

[Q]: How did you become part of the Sea of Thieves community?

[A]: A friend of mine showed me Sea of Thieves, and before I even knew what Twitch was, I played it quite a bit. It was after I started streaming that I really discovered the community and how wonderful it is. Not only are there so many supportive creators, but most of the people who are involved with the community are genuinely so friendly and welcoming. I think the SoT community is a great place for people to make friends, it definitely has been for me.

[Q]: How did creating content become your ‘thing’?

[A]: When I discovered what Twitch was, I was intrigued and watched a few streams before deciding that I would try it out myself. One of the main reasons was because I felt kind of stuck in my social anxiety and wanted to do something outside of my comfort zone. It’s been a crazy journey for sure but one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

[Q]: How do you decide what kind of content to create?

[A]: I just try to make sure I’m having fun with whatever I’m doing, so it really just depends on my mood that day and what games I’m currently into. When I’m playing Sea of Thieves, I like to look for some fun fights with other crews. I have quite a few friends who like to hunt for Commendations and because I myself am a bit of a completionist, we try to work on those as well (ahem, Shrouded Ghost, if you’d like to make an appearance soon that would be nice).

[Q]: What are some of the challenges you’ve faced while creating content?

[A]: Separating work from my own time. I guess this is mainly due to the fact that what I do is incorporating a hobby of mine (gaming) into what I do full-time, and then even when I’m not streaming there are so many things to do that help support the stream, community or my ability to grow. It can definitely be difficult to let myself rest and not feel guilty that I’m not doing more.

[Q]: What different channels do you have?

[A]: I’m mainly on Twitch but I do (rarely) post on Instagram as well. Otherwise, I’m active in my Discord server where I feel I can connect better with my community.

[Q]: What’s been your most memorable Sea of Thieves moment so far?

[A]: I’ve played so much that it’s hard to pick out just one memorable moment. I think the best moments for me are when I get to see others experiencing something in the game for the first time and hearing their amazement and excitement.

If I had to pick just one though, it would be my birthday last year. I thought I was just hopping on for a fun sail with my friends, and when we got on the server, my good friend RangaRogers was excited because there were so many Athena’s Fortune Emissaries and we were going to go hunt them down. We went to check Thieves’ Haven and we could see a few Galleons parked inside, so we were speculating that it was an Athena Alliance.

Little did I know it was all a setup, and my friends were all tucked on the hanging platform and they jumped down to wish me a happy birthday. The screenshot is all of us on the Ferry of the Damned while I was teary-eyed and appreciating the friends I’ve made playing this wonderful game.

[Q]: What do you enjoy most about the game now, and what are you looking forward to in future?

[A]: My favorite thing at the moment is definitely getting into a spicy fight with another crew. I normally sail on Galleons, so when we come up against another Galleon and they want to have a fun and friendly fight, that’s when I’m having the most fun! I’m really excited to see anything added to the game, to be honest.

[Q]: What’s something you’re particularly proud of accomplishing in gaming?

[A]: Growing a community in gaming that has a positive effect on people’s lives. I truly am so grateful. When I get messages from people within my community thanking me for creating a space for them to meet other like-minded individuals to game with or talk to, it genuinely makes me very happy.

[Q]: How did you come up with your channel name?

[A]: My channel name is not very creative, to be honest. Coco was my nickname with friends in high school because when predictive text was a thing on phones the first four letters of my name would predict “Coco”, so they started calling me that. May is just my birth month and because CocoMay was taken, I added an extra ‘y’ – and so there we have it, CocoMayy!

[Q]: What do you like to get up to when you’re not streaming?

[A]: I studied horticulture in Australia and am a huge nature lover, so I spend time caring for my plants, going to botanical gardens or going on nature walks. Otherwise, I try to find the time for painting, drawing or reading a book in the sunshine.

[Q]: What advice would you give to a new content creator?

[A]: Be your authentic self and have fun with whatever you’re doing. If you’re having a good time, you’ll be radiating positive energy that your viewers will be able to pick up on. Other than that, I’d say try your best to be somewhat consistent with a schedule.

[Q]: What’s one thing you would advise a content creator not to do?

[A]: Don’t stay quiet if the chat is quiet. Sometimes this is really hard to do, but try to narrate what you are doing as if you are speaking to the lurkers. There don’t need to be active people in chat for you to be talking. This will make engaging easier with people who do come into the stream – especially if they are new.

[Q]: Could you give us one more random fact about yourself?

[A]: If you’ve watched my streams you may already have heard me talk about it, but I’m NZ/Thai and spent most of my childhood growing up in Indonesia in an American community. However, up until 2020 I’d lived in Australia for eight years. It gets brought up a lot because new viewers get confused by my accent. When I was in Indonesia the community that I lived in was pretty small and on a remote island, so we were surrounded by jungle which is probably where my love for nature and plants comes from!
