Community Spotlight - Matheus

Sea of Thieves superfan Matheus talks to us about creating a home for Brazilian buccaneers!

About a month ago we headed to Brazil Game Show 2017 and took part in the Sea of Thieves team’s first ever South American show. It was a blast, and we’ll have more to share on that a little later this week. One of our standout moments from the trip was meeting big Brazilian Sea of Thieves fan Matheus, who stopped by our booth multiple times not only to play the game but to chat and hang out with us whilst we presided over the four-hour long lines!

It turns out Matheus is working on building a dedicated community in Brazil, and so in today’s Community Spotlight he’ll be telling us what he wants to do and why he wants to do it. Matheus, over to you!

Matheus (pictured kneeling, furthest right) wants to establish a Sea of Thieves community in Brazil.

[Q]: Tell us a little about what got you into gaming.

[A]: I got into gaming at the age of five because my brothers and my father played a lot of videogames too. They had the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation 1 that ended up staying for me, and allowed me to play videogames that I missed out on.

[Q]: Were you a Rare fan before Sea of Thieves and do you have any favourite Rare games?

[A]: Of course I was a fan before Sea of Thieves! My first contact with Rare was Banjo-Kazooie and I loved the game. I spent days on it and I’d be happy to do them all over again.

[Q]: What games are you playing currently? Any favourites?

[A]: At the moment I play a lot of Assassins Creed: Origins and Rainbow Six: Siege. My favourite game would be Rainbow Six: Siege because of the competitive nature of it.

[Q]: What was it that first drew you towards Sea of Thieves?

[A]: When I saw the trailer at E3 2015, I was speechless. When I realized it was an open world with a pirate theme I just fell in love and couldn't wait to play it!

[Q]: We know you’re excited for Sea of Thieves and want to start establishing a community for the game in Brazil. What made you take the initiative to start doing this and what are the first steps you’re taking?

[A]: What inspired me to create this community was a friend named Felipe Negrão, my right-hand man. When he said that I should create a community because of my knowledge of the game and my enthusiasm I simply embraced the idea. The first step I'm taking is to translate the news of Sea of Thieves and spread our Facebook page.

[Q]: Have you got any long-term plans for how you wish to bring Brazilian Sea of Thieves fans together once the game launches?

[A]: My plans are to hold internal and external tournaments, create events and perform interviews with the people responsible for the creation of the game. I’ve also negotiated with Rare about sending swag over to use for giveaways on the Facebook page. This facilitates the opportunity for Brazilians and fans from other American countries to win Rare loot!

[Q]: Having now played Sea of Thieves, do you have any standout moments?

[A]: I had four standout moments in the game. The first was to be the first player to create a fleet composed of three ships. The second moment was until today any of the ships that I commanded sunk! The third moment was when Felipe Negrão was able to steal the enemy ship and crash it into an island, and the fourth moment was being able to play Sea of Thieves with Jason Cross (Assistant Producer) and Cameron Thomas (Community Manager).

[Q]: What are you looking forward to most in Sea of Thieves?

[A]: The possibility for new ships like a man o’ war, or a new type of cannonball like the chained cannonball to stop the enemy ship from running away.

[Q]: If you had to choose a pirate name, what would it be?

[A]: My pirate name would be Blackbeard because I have a black beard and I like Edward Teach’s story!

[Q]: What kind of hobbies do you enjoy outside of gaming?

[A]: My other hobbies include archery, studying history and old weapons.

And there you have it, the story of one Sea of Thieves fan and his quest to create a place that Brazilian buccaneers can call home! We’d like to thank Matheus for answering our questions, and we look forward to seeing how the community grows over the coming months and years. If you want to see what Matheus has been up to then check out his fan page, tentatively named Sea of Thieves Brasil.

As for us, we will of course be back again in the near future with another peek into the life of one of our community stars. Until then, you can check out our previous Spotlights and head over to our social channels to keep up to date with all the latest from Sea of Thieves!
