  • You can play with them using your Windows Store version, as it has cross platform compatibility. If you want to have the game on steam for the steam UI and steam achievements, you have to buy it again on steam. If you do, your progress can transfer over if you link your xbox account to the steam version (it will come up with a prompt when you launch the game to do so).

  • @grogheart Thank you

  • @eerierjpsamuels Sadly you have to buy it again ...

I think those who decide about this should reconsider this decision.

Many told me "there is no way you can buy an object and get a free copy of it just because they are the same". I do agree with it but that's not what I (and I am sure I am not alone) am asking.

Of course giving people free steam keys of the game would just make many of those keys sold over the internet, and thus is not a good idea for obvious reasons.
When people buy it on Steam, they have to link their Microsoft account to be able to play. Why couldn't we link our accounts and then be able to download and play it, because we already own the game ?

It's not receiving another copy of the game but playing the same one on another platform.

From what I have been told "the port to steam isnt aimed at people who already own the game, its for people who have been discouraged to buy the game because of microsoft store and such, its for new people who can have that option now".
It's clear that apparently, having supported the game since the begining, through ms store, initial launch and all of that doesn't make us worth enough to be able to play it through steam without paying again for it, and that's not very nice ...

  • Gotta pay 40 euros again to have a copy of it on Steam but hey at least it has actual full screen for PC players now. Never fixed it in those 2+ years with that UWP trash Microsoft keeps ramming down our throats.

Would be nice to be able to transfer to Steam so we can stop closing our game pressing that lovely X when we move our mouse too fast or using the radial menu and moving your mouse resulting in taskbar being shown and accidentally clicking on something else. Guess that's what we get for buying xbox games lol

  • @rsb5663 ALT+ENTER toggles full screen to get rid of the X anyway no?

EDIT: You really been playing games without pressing ALT+ENTER for 2 years+ ? No wonder you got beef...

  • @wagstr alt+enter change between windowed and bordeless (which is basically doing the same than changing it in the options). There is no fullscreen in sea of thieves despite it's name in the options.
And in borderless what was described can happen : in any menu going too far upward or downward bring up elements such as title bar or taskbar ... Which could be anoying sometimes, for some reasons they didn't correct that ^^'

  • @wagstr Good one dude. Alt enter doesn't mean **** in this game.
I got tired after searching for 10 minutes. Rare has been ignoring this issue since launch for PC players.

At least Rare acknowledged we aren't "entitled" to a steam copy. That's nice.

  • @rsb5663 Wow. You like to do your homework.

I’ve never had this issue with a game so I’m not sure what I’m doing right, it only annoys me in windowed mode. I do prefer Steam given the choice but that’s another matter.

What on earth has it got to do with Rare what Steam decides to give away? It’s Steam’s datacenters, electricity, bandwidth, wages, rent, overheads, Pizza.. etc.. etc..

Why should they suddenly bear the cost of thousands people jumping ship who initially paid Microsoft? Steam would be getting the smelly end of the stick there..

  • @wagstr It's not to Steam to give away anything. You just have to tell them people can link their account to play the game without paying it if they already own it, and there you go.
And about the costs, everyone still play on the same servers anyway.

  • @vincephoenixx. You don’t think Steam are putting up rack space in their datacenters then for any additional SoT servers?

Or are the extra few million people going to all be playing on the current servers, likely in MS datacenters?

Well most people don't have issues with it, mostly streamers.

No, steam doesn't deliver servers for the game. Only a platform to launch/download from. We still go to Azure cloud network where Sea of thieves is hosted.

No they shouldn't reconsider it. If you buy a game on xbox, you have to rebuy it if you want it on playstation. It makes total sense and it logic it is this way.

You already have to game on MS store, play it there, you want it on steam? Well just rebuy it and support the devs with it ;)

  • @mentimjojo Of course they should reconsider it. Many exemples are like yours, but all of them are non sens, and not as logic as they are claimed.
If I own a game on xbox, and want to have the game on playstation, I have to pay for it a second time, and you know what I got then ? 2 copies of the game (which are not even the same due to differences between the 2 consoles). I could, if not selling it, totally lend it to a friend, and still play it because I own the game twice.

Here, Rare is aking people to buy the game again in order to play to the same copy of the game (at the end I will only own the game once, because both will be linked to the same account), which is paying twice for the same thing.
And that's why I really insist on the fact I don't want them to give us free keys for the game, just to let us access a game we already own through a different platform. When you buy a Ubisoft game on Steam, you own it only once, and it doesn't prevent you to download it from either Steam or Uplay, because you own the game and where you dl it from doesn't change anything : you can play it because you own it once.
Having to rebuy it to play with the same account is only "logic" if the idea for the studio is to make people pay twice for the same copy.

Which leads me to the "support devs" part : support is something that needs to be deserved. I think many of us already support them buy buying various cosmetics (which is the only way for them to get money besides selling the game), and back in time some of us for not cancelling preorders when streamers were pointing the lack of content at the beginning. This support was and is deserved : the game was promising and they couldn't do anything to get to the actual point if their ship sinks at the beginning, now they are continuously bringing new things to the game so (even if not mandatory) it's clearly okay to spend money on cosmetics, this is supporting them.
Allowing players who already own the game to dl the game on another platform (but still play on the same servers, with the same account, etc.) would have sent the message "we broaden our horizon in terms of player base, and we thanks those who were already here (by allowing them to do something that do no cost us anything)", but here it's just "we have a way to make players who already own the game to pay for it another time, it's free money", and I sure don't want to support such behaviour.
I am disapointed by such choices.

  • @vincephoenixx

Rare only get a percentage of the game. Microsoft get a percentage of the game if you buy on MS store, Steam get a percentage of the game if you buy on Steam.

Why should Rare get the blame if people want to jump ship from MS to Steam as provider?

Can you not play the game all of a sudden? Am I missing something? The Steam build is a different build but exactly the same game. Just a different platform. The XBOX/Playstation build analogy is very valid here.

EDIT: Also you could create another M$ account and link it to that so you could play both at once or totally lend it to a friend, you would just lose your progress in the Steam version..

  • @wagstr Creating another MS account, link it to steam and ... Oh, this new account does not own SoT, so you are not entitled to access it.
I know, english is not my first language, but I am not clear enough when I say I am not asking for a key ? Just a link between steam and MS accounts so that steam can check I already have access to the game ? I wouln't be the first game to do this ...

Or maybe I didn't get your edit part ?

  • @vincephoenixx

No, you're buying the Steam build of the game, with a Steam account on the Steam platform. You just have to link it to a MS account to play and store progress as it's essentially an xbox game. Any MS account will do, even a brand new one. You would however lose all your historical progress and have to start afresh if you did that. Link it to your existing SoT MS account and you get to keep that progress. Wot a dilemma!

  • If I have played sea of thieves on one Xbox account and then made a new one is there a way to transfer the progress

  • @jah4m3z sagte in Transfer account:

Hey man, this thread is dead...it's 3 years ago

  • @jah4m3z no.

  • Ahoy!

As this thread was 3 years old and revive today I will be dropping anchor here.

Progress can not be transferred across accounts.
