  • And if your account is hacked?
If you lose the phone number?

Blizzard tried this and there was massive backlash. So no.

  • @guildar9194 Yeah, this is a good point... it would be a massive headache for support to keep getting access back to lost accounts.

Microsoft already has 2FA and I have enabled it. Its an authentication method that increases your accounts security, so it cant simply be hacked. The invader would need your set of Email, Password and access to your phone/authenticator app.

    Regarding OPs suggestion:
Only problem I see here is that phone numbers can change the owner, I could request a new phone number from my provider and while the previous number will be temporarly locked, and some time it would be unlocked and another person can get it when they get a new phone contract/request a new number. I guess that wouldnt really work. It would need a more complex system, like a TAN system thats used by banks or something similar I guess.

The easiest way would be if EAC bans on Steam players would be pushed trough VAC (Valve), so the Steam account of that player is game banned for SoT. So they atleast have to get a new game copy/account to play again, which doesnt solve the issue of ban evading but would be another obstacle in the way of getting back into the game.

Edit: Idk whats wrong with my spelling and grammar today, had to re-edit the reply a couple of times, sorry.

Even if it's some type of authenticator..

  • What about a phone app authentication?

And what happens if someone does not own a good enough cellphone?
For example: I'm poor. The only cellphone I have is from the government's free phone initiative, and those are specifically made to block apps.

And what happens if someone loses or breaks their phone, or it just ends up dying, & has to buy a new one?

Or someone buys a new phone, and sells their old phone?

Also; People can spoof phones and phone numbers. I used to emulate mobile games on my PC.

  • @guildar9194 was just a thought, swtor did/do it

Opt-in authentication works fine to secure an account. But then cheaters would just not opt-in.

Forcing it as part of the game, however, just raises too many issues.

Your phone number doesn't change. World of Warcraft has a phone authenticator system and they've had no problems with players getting hacked. Currently they have 3 million players.

that wouldnt change much since they can just use that family sharing feature with a second new steam acc

  • Accessing your account through the auntification app on your phone is not a bad idea in principle. If a player loses his phone, he can download the app again to a new one. If the player got blocked, his number is blacklisted and he will have to buy a new phone number. You write if account hacked, but how will it be hacked if access will be by code from the phone?)

  • This sounds like it would be annoying hastle and since you already have to have a Microsoft account to play on every platform adding a extra step is a huge turn off for many new players especially on ps5. Implementing a CoD 2fa required verification system is too much and not required there's gotta be a better way to do it than that.
