Community Spotlight – Lorenz Sinclair

Meet an accomplished adventurer who's fond of staying fashionable in the process!

The latest Community Spotlight features a pirate who stands out for his distinctive sense of seaworthy style and a not-so-subtle fondness for rat companions. Picking up some practical fashion advice while finding out more about his gaming journey and creative approach to self-expression in Sea of Thieves, we sat down for a chat with Lorenz Sinclair!

[Q]: Can you tell us a little about what got you into gaming?

[A]: I started playing games quite early on. My parents got me into playing Crash Bandicoot on the PlayStation 2 and later on I played on the Nintendo DS and Wii. I even played almost every LEGO game! I got my own PC in 2017 and mostly played single-player games until I got an Xbox in 2019.

[Q]: Were you a Rare fan before Sea of Thieves? Do you have any favourite Rare games?

[A]: I didn’t really know about Rare before I started playing Sea of Thieves, but I do remember watching the Viva Piñata TV show, which was based on the game made by Rare.

[Q]: What other games are you currently playing? Any favourites?

[A]: I play a lot of different games, but I have been getting into Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Helldivers 2 and Alan Wake. I must say that some of my all-time favourite games are Red Dead Redemption 2 and Return of the Obra Dinn.

A lifelong pirate fascination meant Lorenz had a natural calling to the Sea of Thieves.

[Q]: What brought you over to Sea of Thieves and its community?

[A]: I have always loved pirates since I was a kid, so when I saw my brother play Sea of Thieves on the Xbox in 2019, I thought it seemed like my kind of game. I just had to play it for myself!

In the community, I became pretty active on Twitter, but was mostly active on the official Sea of Thieves Discord fashion channel. I loved posting photos of my pirate and talking to others who were also sharing their outfits and fashion tips.

[Q]: You’re known for your love of pirate fashion and distinctive look – what's your favourite cosmetic in the game?

[A]: Naturally, I would say every cosmetic that I wear... But if I had to only choose one specific cosmetic, it might be the Mender’s Jacket. When I first started playing I was just using the full Admiral set, but eventually I started making my own outfit. I finally settled on my current outfit with the Mender’s Jacket, which I haven’t changed at all since 2020!

A fashion pirate at heart, Lorenz has a tried and tested look that many know him by.

[Q]: Do you have any tips for budding fashionistas in the community?

[A]: Wear whatever you want to wear, some may disagree with your taste but experimenting with cosmetics is always fun. Outfits work best when complimenting individual pieces, so choosing a single article of clothing and building your set around it is often an effective way to create something that looks clean. Don't be afraid to mix materials and colors where it looks good! You’d be surprised at what you can accomplish by mixing completely different items, get creative!

[Q]: If you could have any cosmetic added to the game, what would it be?

[A]: I would really like more jewellery! Rings were a great start, but I would also want to have necklaces, earrings and more clothing items that have the classic pirate feel to them!

I also would love it if we could get more hair dye options, it’s been a few years since we’ve gotten any new ones.

[Q]: Thinking back, are there any standout moments for you in Sea of Thieves since you started playing?

[A]: There are a lot of them over the years, but SoTFest 2023 and 2024 are the ones that really stand out to me. Flying alone across countries to meet friends that I have known online for over five years was a great experience. It is something I will never forget.

Meeting pirates you know at SoTFest shows how much the seas really do bring people together.

[Q]: What are your favourite recent additions to Sea of Thieves?

[A]: I love the new locations that have been added to the game. I love the details on the Skeleton Camps and the Temples below, the atmosphere down there is great. Other than that, I love the harpoon tightrope walking feature; it’s perfect for the game!

[Q]: What are your greatest achievements in a game, Sea of Thieves or otherwise?

[A]: There have been a few of them over the years, but before The Arena closed, I got every single Commendation along with Legendary Sea Dog!

I also won the Plunder Games back in 2021. We rowed to every big island with a beacon on it and lit them, which was quite the adventure.

One of my favourites, though, was when, along with Captain McGuffin, Novac and Phsyclops, we were one of the first crews to open the mural door in the Shrine of the Coral Tomb and figure out who killed DeMarco in the first Mystery.

A true trendsetter, Lorenz can easily persuade people to represent the high fashion of his pirate.

[Q]: If you had to choose a pirate and ship name, what would they be?

[A]: I could not think of any good ship names when Captaincy released, so I ended up calling all my ships The Drowned Rat, which I have stuck with since. My pirate’s name is, of course, Lorenz Sinclair. My online name has been Lorenz for many years, people eventually started calling my pirate Lorenz as well, and it fit pretty well. I don’t actually remember where I got the surname Sinclair from, but it does sound like a good pirate name!

[Q]: What kind of other hobbies do you enjoy outside of gaming?

[A]: I do some volunteer work at a railway museum, I even got to help drive one of the trains. I also recently became a part of a medieval reenactment group and I have made my own medieval tunic and hood for the medieval fair this summer. Lastly, ever since I was little I have loved building LEGO, resulting in a huge LEGO collection at home. Hopefully one day I will finish sorting it, but the pile never ends…

[Q]: Share a fun fact about yourself. Anything is fair game!

[A]: I have acted in two movies, in one of them I was on the screen a lot, but with no lines. I even got my name in the credits before one of the main actors and I learned how to correctly pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

And on that unexpected note, we come to the end of another Community Spotlight! A huge thank you to Lorenz for taking the time to sit down with us and chat all things fashion – we’re excited to see what he makes of upcoming cosmetics and have no doubt he’ll put them to good use.
