Community Spotlight - FrostE

This week the Community Spotlight shines on Sea of Thieves Twitch streamer FrostE!

Over the past several months since Sea of Thieves launched and arguably even before that, one thing that we’ve become acutely aware of is just how creative this community can be. If our previous Pirate Times issues, #SoTShot contests or the creative gems sent through to us on social media are anything to go by, you don’t have to go to the same lengths that Damien Hirst did with his £50 million crystal skull to produce a truly creative piratical piece.

The man at the centre of our latest Community Spotlight knows this all too well. FrostE, a Sea of Thieves fan and Twitch streamer, has created something especially unique in the way he’s turned our game into, well, a game show. He took the time to tell us all about it.

FrostE, over to you!

Meet the man behind Sea of Thieves Twitch gameshow Loot & Lore!

[Q]: Tell us a little about what got you into gaming?

[A]: Got into gaming like many other ’80s baby gamers. My parents got me a Nintendo for Christmas one year and my mother taught me how to play at a very young age and I stayed HOOKED! (Get it?)

[Q]: Were you a Rare fan before Sea of Thieves and do you have any favourite Rare games?

[A]: I don’t think I could say I was a Rare fan, however I have memories of often playing GoldenEye after school with my friends in middle school. Battletoads was my first memory of Rare when I was really young and I only beat it once when in high school using save states on a PC emulator… so difficult!

[Q]: What games are you playing currently? Any favourites?

[A]: Just Sea of Thieves to be honest. I’m 100% dedicated to the Loot and Lore content, the SoT community and my Twitch family. If we are talking favorite game of all time, it’d be a toss-up between Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast and GameCube and the Wipeout anti-gravity racing franchise… and Sea of Thieves.

Chill? FrostE? We're noticing a pattern here...

[Q]: What was it that first drew you towards Sea of Thieves and its community?

[A]: The SoT community is so welcoming and kind-hearted, I’ve never met such a large group of players who are so passionate and dedicated to growing and sharing this experience together. When I first saw the game it honestly just looked like something I could sit back and enjoy and relax with. I still know that to be true months later.

[Q]: You’ve been doing some great work with Loot and Lore. What gave you the idea to start streaming and create this series?

[A]: I’ve been streaming for a bit now but creating the Loot and Lore series came from a feeling of wanting to grow the community, seeing/being a part of some griefing and harsh PvP stories and realizing that wasn’t helping newcomers or longevity at all for many people. I’m a reformed pirate, we aren’t all perfect! But I just wanted to help the devs and the community make this bigger and show everyone that it CAN be safe, light-hearted and fun out there and not everyone is out to ruin your experience. The joy of giving loot away and seeing the reactions is addicting and I love every second of the process!

[Q]: What plans do you have for Loot and Lore going forward?

[A]: My plans for Loot and Lore will evolve as long as Rare continues to evolve our experience. I don’t want to spoil anything by throwing ideas out there before content hits BUT there will be some upgraded versions of a few current games we have, along with some new rowboat activities, of course.

[Q]: Any advice for other players in the community on creating fun Sea of Thieves content?

[A]: Have fun with it, be yourself, be passionate and be unique. Create something that impacts in a positive way and changes the way people think about the entire experience, create your own legend in the game, that’s what it’s all about!

Loot and Lore has the power to bring rival crews together in jolly co-operation (and celebration).

[Q]: Do you have any standout Sea of Thieves moments?

[A]: It’s like pirates winning the lottery, and I always said that Loot and Lore was a success when random people started recognizing us! WE MADE IT, TEAM!

[Q]: What are you looking forward to most in Sea of Thieves’ future?

[A]: I want to see cooking! I’m a chef and getting to cook recipes with certain food items in different ways for various buffs and whatnot would be SWEET. Let me be a Half-A-Stew Jean! I’m also totally on board with taverns being safe zones and having more minigames for pirates to play together to pass time… MAYBE an island pirate casino!

[Q]: What is your greatest achievement in a game, Sea of Thieves or otherwise?

[A]: Becoming what I’ve become on the Sea of Thieves and the impact Loot and Lore has had on so many players and friends has been wild, probably my biggest gaming feat. I also met some amazing friends travelling to Wipeout tournaments back in the day. (Catch me on the track, I’ll smoke you!)

[Q]: If you had to choose a pirate name, what would it be?

[A]: My official pirate name would easily be “Loot n’ Lore Chillmore”. But you can call me the Banana Bandit.

[Q]: What kind of hobbies do you enjoy outside of gaming?

[A]: Outside of gaming I enjoy campy ’70s and ’80s horror flicks, good scotch, cooking, hiking and literally anything involving my daughter.

[Q]: Share a fun fact about yourself. Anything is fair game!

[A]: This is supposed to be a “fun fact about me” but I’d honestly rather take this portion to thank the FrostE Force, the Sea of Thieves community and you guys and girls at Rare. L&L wouldn’t be where it is without the stellar fanbase and my Twitch family. You all mean so much to me and it’s a dream come true every time I go live. YOU all make this what it’s become, and I couldn’t ever thank you enough. *Tankards up*

And that concludes our latest Community Spotlight. Thank you to FrostE for taking the time to chat with us and for supporting Sea of Thieves in such a fantastic way. We look forward to seeing where his show goes next!
