Make the game less political

  • I would be glad, if the game could be a game.

There is no reason, why ANY majority or minority of ANY real life concerns has to get a stage in the game.

No flags, sails, clothes of any real life groups, cooperations, clubs etc.

Personally, I have the strong feeling, that most people playing this game, gathered here to actually PLAY, not to discuss or being confronted with any real life concerns.

  • The game is not political. I think that ends that discussion.

Several locked and/or deleted threads within the last hours prove you wrong.

  • @longingfern4785 Your talking about a forum. Not the game.

  • If you have a ship that means you have blood, and me and my crew's blood buckets will overflow with the blood of all noobs, regardless of what ensign they fly.

  • @longingfern4785 what, how is it political? there is nothing in this game that makes it political

  • It’s just a flag. It’s not political, no matter how some may try to make it so. It’s a positive gesture and I applaud it. The flag itself can mean anything you like in the game. A rainbow is still a generic symbol in the 16th century. If you don’t like it, don’t fly it. Easy.

  • I mean if people see the rainbow flag as non political, couldnt we get any flag then ? From countries, to ideologies, silly memes or historical factions (good and/or evil) ?
    Conspiracies everywhere lol
If there is one thing i learnt in the passed few days: do not read too much into things.
Rainbows have been around for a while. No one is mentioning the leprechauns, who happen to have a close relationship to rainbows.

  • I lost brain cells reading this thread..there is nothing political about this game.

  • If the game designers have somehow offended your fragile beliefs by adding a rainbow flag, just stop playing and be done with it.

  • @longingfern4785 kind of goes to show Rare has a vested interest here

  • The flag was implemented with the message, that it is to support the "pride month". How can you be less non-political?

Of cause, you can ignore it, because it is just a set of colors. But with this argumentation, you could add just anything. Different symbols, mean different things in different cultures.

As there is NO REASON to be political in a game and I just want to suggest to DON'T GET political. Is this a problem for anybody? Does anybody really need to show their sympathy for anything in a game? I don't think so. It is totally off topic in any game.

It leads to no benefit for nobody.

  • when the first human gazed upon a rainbow, did he think it political? and if you want to get technical, the Jolly Roger is political. the politics of piracy. just chill and maybe actually fly the flag and forget about what you believe and what others might believe of you. try a ideological vacation. it's just colors and people are all the same.

  • @longingfern4785 yesterday I met someone who was a Republican.
    I am from another country.

    I reported him.

No offense to anyone, its a made up story. Just to be pointless.

  • If people are offended by a rainbow they should just leave the game. They will not be missed.

  • @captsubtext420 people who deem they are in special need of a rainbow flag. Would of also been welcomed to go & unmissed

  • @cptn-greyjoy I get it, the rainbow and what it symbolizes is an affront to your fragile beliefs. So sorry, (not sorry) You will just have to learn to get over it or just stop playing.

  • @knightfire098 My bias is toward not giving a crud what other people do with their lives. You should try it out sometime.

  • Intolerant people claiming they are not tolerated while wanting tolerance so they can be intolerant.

Hmm... So I think to myself...

I know there has been an uptick in the Chest of a Thousand Grogs my pockets are a bit fatter but when did the realease customizable pipes and what on earth are people smoking?

Thanks Rare for an awesome update!

  • @captsubtext420 I’m the one with fragile beliefs. I wasn’t one of the ones who initially complained to get their beliefs implemented in a video game.

Lock my beliefs & your beliefs in a room & see which survives. History is written by the victor

  • I was trying to be good but oh well y’all gonna have to ban me today

  • @ironuzuka said in Make the game less political:

    Understatement 🤣

  • Kind of makes you wonder about pirates with eye liner and pierced ears. Living in close quarters at sea for months at a time. Google it.

But this is SoT, not real history. So it's okay to have butch females with full beards and old guys in dresses.

Tolerance people, it's all just in fun, right?

  • @longingfern4785 HERE HERE!!!!!

  • @ironuzuka aye. Where the Irish be at on these forums to tell us these things!

  • The best way to look at things, imagine the opposite of it.

Want a gay pride flag? How would you feel about other ships flying a straight pride flag?

    Etc, etc, etc...

Before you say you don't care, you have to think about every option. Not just those two examples.

  • I would like to know how a rainbow flag is political? I am genuinely curious, because it feels like someone who does not like gay thing, uses the "Its politics!" argument.

Being against gay rights is not a political issue, isn't it a religious or "I think its icky" issue? If I don't think dwarfs should have rights, that's not a political issue, that's a "I am a d***' issue. Giving rights to colored people used to be 'politics' back in the day, should we be outraged at Rare for allowing any colored character to be in the game? (I know, its a strong, damn near outrageous comparison).

People are attaching their beliefs to their politics, doesn't necessarily make it a politics.

Is it the way in which it is added? Rare saying the flag is essentially to depict the LGBT community. Would people be so upset had they announced the rainbow flag would be added without mentioning "the game is to include any race, ethnicity, orientation, etc"?

Religious flags I can understand not wanting to be added into the game, along with actual political flags (i.e republican/democrat flags from U.S) due to historical attacks, repression, slaughter, etc.

It just feels odd to me, that so, so many people are against it. I have seen many arguments that just don't make sense. "Well, it isn't very pirate-y!" Neither are the majority of the other flags, or sails, or other cosmetics.

"Where is my -insert flag here-?!" it might come, They didn't release all the sails and hulls at the same time? I don't see much outrage for a pink sail color when red has already been added. We know this game has been a little slow on trickling out cosmetics, so I am sure more flags will follow.

Idk, I see it less of a political statement and more of s statement "we're not d***s".

However, if you think there is a legitimate reason why the rainbow flag should not be included in the game, I am all ears.

  • @longingfern4785 said in Make the game less political:

Nowhere in the patch notes or update does it say it was added to support pride month. It simply restates a message in the pirate code that has been there all along.

Rainbow flag - A new flag has been added to all pirates' flag inventory! Article 1 of the Pirate Code states that, "Everyone is welcome on the Sea of Thieves regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, nationality or creed."

  • I hope no one takes offense to this. It's meant as possible solution and not a "poke with a stick" reply...

For those upset by the addition of the "rainbow flag" in the new update, would it have been any different if it were a multi-colored flag with a different look? For example: if the lines were more vertical or angled so it was not a copy of the actual (real life) flag?

Would that have been an acceptable solution?

  • @knightfire098 I'm only calling attention to the facts, and keeping others from distorting them. Everyone knows what was implied by the statement. No intellectual dishonesty, honest. If you let these things go unchecked, people start believing the untruths. Let's keep an honest visual of the original statement.

  • @longingfern4785 People are making such a big deal over a flag, its just a rainbow flag it doesn't change gameplay. Tbh Im going to use it to RP lol put on a dress and start saying "heyyyy boyyys!" Everyone posting threads like these I think are taking themselves a bit too seriously. Besides its not like its a country flag, its not like completely breaking immersion its just a colorful flag dude

  • I love how rainbows triggers lame people.

  • Saying you have a problem with the rainbow flag being in the game, is the same as saying you have a problem with Article 1. of Rare's pirate code:

"Everyone is welcome on the Sea of Thieves regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, nationality or creed."

That they chose to emphasize the article in coinciding with Pride month only makes sense to me. It's a belief they have always held. If they find other flags that fit their articles, they should feel free to include them as well.

I'll follow that up with this. There is no paradox in saying that we shouldn't tolerate intolerance. It's crucial that we all do this loudly.

I believe adding any real-life flag is fine, under the following criteria.
The symbolism portrayed defines no hate, no intolerance or exclusionary doctrine.

While I can sympathize with those that wish Rare had never stepped into this quagmire, I admire them for making the choice.

  • @cptn-greyjoy said in Make the game less political:

@longingfern4785 kind of goes to show Rare has a vested interest here

Yes indeed, their interest is that they're done with the disrespect, intolerance and discrimination that some people on these forums show towards a group of their fellow pirates. It was shown at a simple suggestion for a rainbow flag and even before in the Fleet recruitment thread. Even if they didn't intend to add the flag in the game, intolerant people with a shallow mind kindof force their hand on the issue.

  • From our about game page:

Sea of Thieves is a new type of multiplayer game that delivers all you need to live the free-roaming pirate life. Whether adventuring as a group or sailing solo, you'll encounter other crews... but will they be friends or foes, and how will you respond?

If you read through our Tavern Tales, you'll see that there is a wide range of people telling their awesome stories through gameplay. Either with friends they had before, or new friends they've made along the way.

We've seen our players use the tools we've given them to create the kinds of stories they want to tell, and they've been surprising us at each turn! We've seen lanterns used as police lights, megaphones used by a captain to give the inflight safety announcements and animal cages used to spell out words on the beaches! The flags are no different and we're excited to see the cool ways our players can use them in the future.
