  • @archangel-timmy I dare say that Ya have too much good faith in humanity mate xD

  • They should remove grog and replace it with milk, and fill that final empty inventory slot with a fidget spinner. Pirates love fidget spinners, and hate M-rated content!

  • Nobody said anything about disliking M-Rated content :?

  • @they-sank lol Are you sure it will not become a habit?

  • @ardent-hallern Best answer ever given yet.

  • @archangel-timmy Well that is perfect. When you find smoking is already in the game you don't have to argue anymore.

  • @m3tal-daz3 said in Pirate pipes:

@archangel-timmy Would you say as disgusting as drinking and puking? Or as disgusting as firing cannons upon people?

As an ex-smoker, I would say yes, much worse. Smoking shouldn't be glorified in any way such as through cool pipes.

  • @m3tal-daz3 said in Pirate pipes:

@crimsonraziel I never heard anyone to get arrested because he/she was under the influence of tobacco. Something to think about in your own.

    @m3tal-daz3 said in Pirate pipes:

@crimsonraziel In Germany kids can't purchase toy guns since WWII. Would you say on the same argument RARE is pushing it with all this shooting and sword slicing?!

I'm not responsible for any of these laws in any of these countries. This is not a debate whether their respective laws are sensible or not.
You totally missed the point. Companies have to deal with these as they are.

By the way children can buy toy guns in Germany. There is only a law about toy guns that aren't easily distinguishable from real guns. Airsoft guns are only a subset.

  • @M3tal-Daz3

    Ah these guns you means.
Well to me these are no toy guns, but i know what you meant here.
I was more if thinking a Colt for carnival or something like this.

I once had a softair gun, looked very much like a real one and shot in close range is for sure a risk.
Those arent toys and therefore not treated as toy guns in Germany, correct.
I dont want my or other kids run around with such airguns honestly.
    18+ is maybe ok.

    But completely another story.

Add pipes, it's hippocrisy if they dont, honestly.

  • @m3tal-daz3 I was a milk addict for many years, toughest habit I ever kicked.

  • @m3tal-daz3 not really because the rating already has use of alcohol and then they would then have to put use of tobacco

  • On the note of changing the rating... Sea of Thieves is skating by with a PEGI-12 rating with its use of Alcohol, so there is a very good chance that it would be bumped up to PEGI-16 with the addition of Tobacco.

    PEGI - Rating Descriptors

The game refers to or depicts the use of illegal drugs, alcohol or tobacco. Games with this content descriptor are always PEGI 16 or PEGI 18.

While this may not seem like much, it pulls it further away from a family oriented game which has been one of the main aspects that Rare is proud of.

On top of that, the only argument provided by OP for adding the ability to smoke is that it would be a "cool prop" and "look cool". This is the same garbage fed to children to get them hooked on the stuff in the first place and is more of an argument against adding it. At the end of the day, this would contribute nothing to the game other than to perpetuate a disgusting habit.

There were also some statements about the content being in the concept art, and in some instances currently in the game.

    • Concept art is just that, a concept. Just because it was an idea at one point is no guarantee of it becoming a reality.
    • NPC's have used them, and models for a pipe can be found in the world. Seeing them in the world is different than handing control of it over to the character/player.

It was pointed out that an Employee said they would be coming to the game, but that was over 10 months ago with no additional information. It is entirely possible that the addition was dropped in that timeframe, and I sincerely hope so.

  • @archangel-timmy I want smoking in the game and I have never smoked a day in my life. I think people should just learn some self control. If your swayed to smoke because of a game than you have no self control which probably means you were smoking before you saw it in game. There are plenty of games and advertisements for smoking out there and it should be up to individuals and not rare. Stop blaming other outside sources for your issues and inability to control yourself.

  • @starquest I don't smoke and have never been tempted to smoke, just as you seem to have things under control. That isn't the issue here, but rather the correlation between tobacco infused media and the population that consumes said media as a whole, specifically the younger generation.

The use of tobacco in all forms of media has become more and more regulated throughout the years for a reason, and allowing such things in a game targeted for the whole family as an "activity" is completely backwards and potentially damaging.

  • @archangel-timmy to who exactly is it damaging, I have four kids and it's up to me to teach them what to do and how to behave. If children are smoking more than ever before which I dont believe is the case at least from where I am from. I hardly see smoking kids around town like it used to be. But if it was a problem then it should be up to the adult or parents to teach them and not a game. Most parents dont even follow eserb ratings or even know there is a rating system so that whole argument is pretty moot. Most kids play or have played grand theft auto before and last I checked it had every bad thing under the sun. I dont think a pipe would even resemble the type of smoking that you usually see such as vaping or cigarettes. I just dont see it as a huge deal and parents should be more involved with thier kids lives.

  • @rk1-turbulence I never heard anybody had an accident or killed someone else under the influence of tobacco. All you need is some ex-drinker friend to tell you different.

  • @crimsonraziel So don't take it upon yourself to answer on the name of companies just express your opinion and move on. If everything that went through the video games content in years was seen through the same lenses we would never had those colorful titles that entertain us but just boring and bland games.

  • @m3tal-daz3 You're still missing the point and I'm losing hope that you'll ever get it.

  • @m3tal-daz3 agree. When u smoke move faster but lose health 👌

  • I smoked so many pipes as a child and i do not smoke cigarettes or pipes as an adult.

Damaging, in this case, is quite a broad term I suppose. For me, any single person who picks up smoking is damaging to society as it doesn't just impact that one person. There is an increased risk to the health of those around that person, as well as the increased possibility of those close to this person of picking it up. Damage could also be extended to Rare as they may be forced to increase their rating which some parents do take into consideration. This could also go beyond and shed a negative light on Rare as they would be directly supporting the idea of smoking as an activity. While there is research in regards to the links between media and smoking and the social aspects of supporting such things, it isn't possible to calculate to what degree they will be damaging. It is up to Rare to weight the risks and decide what they will.

I agree that a lot of this should fall on the parents, some things are beyond their control. We can teach our kids what we deem is right and wrong, but they will ultimately do what they feel is right for them as the parent isn't the only influencer. Which is where the regulation from other sources comes in to play and is taken more seriously by the governing bodies and various companies themselves. The research is there in regards to the risks of tobacco, and the correlation between various types of influence and the use of it.

I live near a High School, and I am quite surprised as to how many of them smoke considering all of the history, risks, and general stigma around it. Over the years I have known many smokers, and now vapers/e-cig users, and I don't feel they are different enough to matter in regards to how they are portrayed. I know people who switched from smoking to vapers/e-cigs, as well as those who went the opposite way.

I am in no way saying that adding this to SoT will cause every 12-year old to become a chain smoker, but with every positive exposure to it, there is the potential for it to happen.

If it doesn't add anything to the game or experience, especially something with such so much stigma, why add it? I don't feel it is a good choice, but again, at the end that is up to Rare...

  • We had pipes in Lord Of The Rings Online and it never caused a fuss. I used to enjoy smoking my different types of pipe-weed. I think its a great idea to have them in SoT.

  • @archangel-timmy While I do not care for people that smoke as well. I think it's a filthy nonsensical habbit that costs a lot of money and harms others. However I dont believe adding it to a game where it fits the time period and is there for immersive reasons and thematic reasons. I dont believe that means rare is advocating smoking. Most movies with smoking that fits the theme arent advocates of smoking. Furthermore the use of alchohol is in the game and can be just as deadly or harmful to society. Ask anyone who has known someone that was killed by a drunk driver. The inclusion of alchohol does not mean rare is advocating drinking or even operating a boat while under the influence. Thematically they both make sense.

    What fact?

    • That there aren't pipes for players in SoT and there is no reliable source in this thread that indicates this will change?
    • That Europe doesn't care about ESRB?
    • That I'm not arguing against pipes but against a false claim, and that it seemingly goes above your head?
  • @starquest said in Pirate pipes:

In Europe, where Rare is located btw, the PEGI rating is legally binding for stores (at least in some countries, including the UK). While parents can still buy PEGI 18 (GTA V) games for their kids, maintaining a PEGI 12 rating (like SoT) is a huge factor for sales numbers. Personally I do not now any person with children under 18 that is unaware of PEGI.
I know there was an attempt to make ESRB ratings legally binding in the US too, but to my (potentially outdated) knowledge it's still voluntary.

A related issue, unlike the US in Vienna (Austria) you aren't allowed to view movies in cinema that are rated above your age even when you're accompanied by your parents.

  • @crimsonraziel Truth to be told I don't know mate. This screenshot been rotting on my hard drive for a solid few months. This was posted in Q&A with devs before game launched. Though it doesn't really matters now, given that You were right about PEGI rating concerns.

  • @ardent-hallern Don't get me wrong, I do not know whether Rare will implement pipes in the future or not. Rare may as well have pushed it back or lowered it's priority but still having it on their wish list. Only time will tell (or an official statement by Rare :D ).

What I tried to point out is that age ratings are not as trivial as depicted in some posts in this thread. Obviously Rare found a way to add alcohol to the game in way that authorities are cool with for a PEGI 12 game (or they smuggled it in), maybe there is a way for smoking too, maybe it's already borderline. Being able to drink alcohol in the game isn't a carte blanche for adding smoking.

  • @crimsonraziel Oh I get You right, don't worry about that mate XD

The thing is instead of bickering about wheather or not adding smoking pipes as a customization is a good idea, I simply asked the devs on Twitter what they think about it. Got my answer from Joe Neate.

Mike Chapman is pushing for it all the time, but at the same time a good deal of devs are concerned about the risk of increasing age rating. So right now smoking pipes are unilkely addition, unless they figure out something about it.

Won't stop hoping for 'em though. While she's a mother of fools, hope dies last innit? xD

  • @ardent-hallern At least it's good to know this is being discussed. All this rating and baby proofing behavior is becoming really silly.

  • @crimsonraziel No need to get nasty. After expressing your personal opinion you can move on, no one is forcing you to make a "point""

Come on how good would this look in-game?
