This is Not a Five Year Old's Birthday Party

  • There is a game played at kids' birthday parties called Pass the Parcel. You know it, surely! A small prize, in many layers of wrapping paper, is passed from child to child as music plays. When the music stops, the child holding the parcel removes just one layer of wrapping.

Now, when I was a kid, there was only one prize, in the very centre of the parcel and it was the kid that removed the last layer of wrapping that won it. These days, I believe, there are often small prizes in every layer, so that no kid misses out.

So often, we see posts here (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4) that complain that someone played for a hour or two, but missed out on loot or rep because they fell victim to other pirates, Meg, Karen, skelly ships, or volcanoes in the Devil's Roar. They inevitably ask that the threats be dialled back, so that they do not lose loot like that again.

    One poster complained:

I actually just logged off because I got attacked by a meg and a skeleton crew that popped up out of nowhere at the same time. 45 minutes - no loot.

[Mod edit - please refrain from being personally condescending.]

Sometimes you play and don't get to cash in loot and earn reputation. Sometimes you lose! Yes: It can be annoying and frustrating. It can even make you downright angry sometimes. But, that is also what makes being successful worthwhile. And, unless you are very unlucky, or playing very badly, you seldom lose everything time after time.

Play for fun, the adventures, the fellowship with your crew-mates, and the stories. The loot and rep will follow. But do not expect to "win" every round.

This game is NOT a five year old's birthday party.

    Footnote

Right now, Duke may be cowering in a corner of the Tavern but the most recent Bilge Rat adventure is still Shrouded Spoils, with doubloons to be earned for defeating Karen, the various Megs, and for selling Skeleton Captains' skulls. These threats are likely to be more prevalent for a while yet, but I bet Rare will dial them back a bit soon.

  • Well say they give every player one million gold each session.. i dont care they buy a new beard nothing happens right?
I dont need it i already got clothes and a boat im fine :")
I need a treasure cave to fill before they can make me greedy until then gold has no value as it is now its just cloths and boats its fun but not important like a treasure cave or a five year olds bd party

  • well said.
It's about the journey, not the destination.

  • @surveyorpete Exactly! Tired of people complaining that they’ve spent ‘hours’ and ‘lost all their loot’ it’s not supposed to be an easy ride that’s the point of the game.

  • Everyone thinks they're entitled to a cookie. Well sometimes you don't get the cookie either because of bad luck or being outplayed. Didn't get the cookie this time? Well try again and adapt, that's part of the fun in any video game. The cookie tastes so much better when your efforts finally pay off.

You still have fun even when you lose. Let me tell you, I have lost a lot of treasure in this game before. A whole play session worth. I know how that feels. And I still remember that particular session being great fun sailing the seas with my wonderful crew - a story of epic plunder and riches, all lost to the biggest gamble of all at a skull fort.

Do not insist that every challenge be flattened because you can't adapt, and more importantly don't expect a cookie just because you turned the game on and invested some time in it. Just have fun with the game itself and take pride in the accomplishments you're able to achieve along the way.

  • Agree. We really need some moderation around here to merge/close these threads from the children and the recently aggrieved who aren't intellectually capable, at present, to understand what Sea of Thieves means to be.

It doesn't want to be a little private playground, equally catering to all play-styles. Typically, no game succeeds by trying to be all things to all players. It wants to be a balanced multiplayer open world where player interaction IS the content. If you're not digging that, don't play. Stop spamming these forums.

Perfectly said. I love it. They always seem to argue "PvE servers should be in the game because we're allowed to play the way you want to"

People take the "play how you want" thing much more loosely than what was intended. Rare has designed a game where players can experience all kinds of interactions, friendly or hostile, without being partial to either type. So while there's freedom to play how you want, there most certainly is a wide scope of experiences that the developers very much want people to be exposed to and respond to.

These spam posts just come from people not actually understanding what Sea of Thieves actually is. I have confidence that Rare will always continue make the game what they have intended it to be, even if there is a large calling for something that doesn't fit into their vision for the game.

  • @chronodusk Right, it is more accurately "treat others however you want". But there will always be others and you get what you give.

  • Other day I started playing with some newbies, it was just me of A10 and 3 guys who had just started playing.

I started to teach them, one of them asked me "What are we going to do?" I replied with "You decide", one of them questioned "Do you want to make comendations or prefer to make money?" and I replied with "Whatever, I play for fun, money and comendation is consequence."

Basically: I play for fun, if I'm going to do something for money or reputation, I'd rather turn off the Xbox and go work programming.

  • People moaning about this generation, forget which generation raised them lol and previous generations like to try and take some moral high ground but in all fairness they where just as bad but in different ways. It’s called growing up and maturing with age.

But in all fairness, I agree. And the one thing people need to understand is, it’s not your loot untill it’s cashed in. Even if it is on your ship.

But on the other side these posts moaning about others moaning are just as anoying. And are starting to pop up just as often. And the condescending and patronising tone probably isn’t going to help, after all the game wasn’t just developed to be your own personal playground.
It was and is still being designed for a wide variety of audiences of all ages and they should all be allowed to express there opinions wheather you like them or not, without being called out and or made an example of because your anoyed. It’s just as childish in my opinion.

  • @knifelife The thing is, this forum is supposed to be a place for discussion about the game and how it can be built on, but instead this forum is getting spammed with requests to outright change the game into something it isn't.

You may be right that making a post against the spam posts is just as bad as the spam, but I personally feel that this thread is a good reminder for everyone who complains about losing in this game. I also think it highlights the need for megathreads so we can leave room for actual discussions about building on the version of Sea of Thieves that Rare has shipped rather than the "PvE Only Server" spam that's basically asking Rare to ship a different product.

  • @chronodusk @KnifeLife I think the point about mega threads is a very accurate point. I won't address the actual OP as I do feel it is simply another condescending thread with little real value. But rather focus on Rare's inability to fill KhalesiBots role. They need that role filled and a community manager again. Right now, the lack of that leadership has lead the forums into a bit of disarray and allows for so many out of control threads. There are probably two or three subjects getting far too much attention thanks to a lack of mega threads. They have taken over the airwaves and have started making us all a bit salty. I sincerely hope Rare gets off their back sides and fills that role, and not only fills that role, but makes sure these forums become the primary choice for communications with the community as it used to be.

I get your point, but at the end of the day it’s not down to us to decide what the game is. That’s up to the developers, we can give our opinions and suggestions but we don’t get to decide.
Just before the game launched the developers said 2 things:

    1. You will never see an ship on the horizon that isn’t manned by an actual player. Due to popular demand that changed, and I’m glad it did personally.
    2. The servers will never be split, now we have the arena coming out. It remains to be seen if that is a good or bad thing but time will tell.

You may be right that making a post against the spam posts is just as bad as the spam, but I personally feel that this thread is a good reminder for everyone who complains about losing in this game. We do have the ignore thread option, but we also need to remember we where all new once. Heck imagine how many duplicate threads the deckhands have had to see in there time. I bet they get just as anoyed sometimes and they are probably not even allowed to hide it.
No matter what happens people will always join and rehash the same ideas, it’s just at the monument we have had a huge influx of new pirates and it’s all happening at once.

But I agree it can be anoying sometimes, but if people just didn’t reply to them they wouldn’t be brought to the top of the page. But instead what happens is people go on the thread moan about it and give it more attention. They are more to blame in my opinion than the new member who has just signed up and wants to share there views.

And In reference to the mega threads, I personally don’t see the point. It’s all very well heardibg everyone into one area for a specific conversation but to what end does it apply. The developers never respond to them, you just end up getting an echo chamber of frustration and arguments break out.

The only time the developers come to the forums is when you get hundreds of the same posts constantly over all there media networks and are forced to address the concerns. One again in my opinion the fault lies with the developers not the newer members.

I’m not saying I’m correct though, that’s just my view on the situation. We could all be doing things better to avoid the situations which annoy us but we don’t.
Instead we make stupid threads like this which attack, split and divide us.

  • it can be anoying sometimes, but if people just didn’t reply to them they wouldn’t be brought to the top of the page. But instead what happens is people go on the thread moan about it and give it more attention.

So true! Meaning that simple, little, non-controversial ideas – like this one of mine – slip into obscurity.

  • @surveyorpete Your right, it happens to so many.
Just think if the devs finally came out and said:
“Look we have heard you feedback we are looking into crossplay and PvE servers”
    Or
“Crossplay and PvE servers are not happening. It’s not the vision we have for the game”

The mods can litrally paste the reply in, thread locked conversation over. We can all get on with better topics.
But instead they leave us arguing and debating with no closure. So the mods have to be unbiased in the threads and give each one an equal chance because they have no official answer.

They could end 90% of these problems.. but for some reason they dont.

Yeah you're right, and I truly had been thinking a bit of the same that they should really come out and say something on it. If they chimed in from the weekly dev update next week and just said "Here is our stance on PvE servers and crossplay" The issue would be solved.

  • @knifelife

Thanks for your support; but my point was not really just about the threads asking for no cross-play or PvE only servers; although the threads I am talking about sometimes take that form.

I was really begging for players on the Sea of Thieves to drop the sense of entitlement that some of them seem to have: the belief that every time they invest more than 30 minutes in the game; they must win loot, gold, rep, and/or commendations.

I started my own thread, because I just wanted to say these things once, rather than have to post a similar response in every such "this game is too hard" thread that pops up.

I loved how @TargasBR put it:

I started to teach [some newbies], one of them asked me "What are we going to do?" I replied with "You decide", one of them questioned "Do you want to make commendations or prefer to make money?" and I replied with "Whatever. I play for fun, money and commendation is consequence."
