Whale Hunting + Harpoon [Suggestion]

  • If there's one thing that this game is missing, it's fishing.
We should be able to catch small fishes with our fishing rod and then sell their meat to the merchant's guild, and its value could be based on the integrity of the fish (if you damaged it too much by going back and forth over and over with the hook, it'd be worth less, and so on).
Speaking of which, it'd be awesome to have whales (in various classes, similar to the mega sharks') in this game, and along with them, new ways to hunt large animals. And by new ways I mean the harpoon, a new weapon that could be bought (for a reasonable amount or even for free, in order to not harm the overall balance of the PvP) and placed on every single ship.
The harpoon would not only be useful for hunting, but also for attaching your ship to the enemy's (if you're in a sloop and the enemy is in a bigger ship, then yours would be pulled towards it, and vice-versa).
    Whale hunting mechanic:
Whales would play similar to mega sharks on the beginning of the fight, they would attack your ship (maybe from below, since they can't "jump" as well as them) and them circle around it, going up ever so often to breath some air. And then you'd shoot it with cannons until its HP got low - when it happens, the whale would start to swim away, and that's where the harpoon comes in. You'd attach it into the whale (the physics would work like it does with ships, only galleons would manage to fully pull the whale towards them instead, while smaller ships would, in different intensities, be dragged towards the whale), get near it and finalize it with your guns and cannon balls. The harpoon would require 1 player to be constantly pulling the reel, else it'd slowly loosen up, similar to the "lifting the anchor" mechanic - the harpoon could also be destroyable by enemy shots (reasonably high HP), in order to allow some interesting counterplay - it'd be also repairable, similar to the ship's hull.
After killing the whale, you'd sell the oil and meat to the nearest merchant avaliable (maybe it could have even swallowed some chest or gold on it's way). The value of it should be based on the size and class of the whale.

  • Fishing has been very demanded and will come. Rare will make it happen. I had this post about it a while back on how it could work and expanded on what it could bring to the Sea of Thieves.

Fishing, Crabbing, Clams, and Harpoon Monster Hunting

There are several reasons that whaling will not come to the Sea of Thieves. Foremost is the belief by most that the practice in general is no longer acceptable as a commercialized practice. Whales have become greatly endangered. We also have threats in the sea such as the Megs that suffice for such gameplay. We could add harpoons to hunt them. There could also be larger, bigger monsters added at some point, even if it is just for a limited event.

It would be better to have whales as part of the environment. The sea is in need of having more life. It would be better to see a whale surface or jump near you ship occasionally. To have a chance to swim near them when we explore shipwrecks. Same would be nice to have dolphins. It would bring much more to the game by having their beauty to enjoy than killing them.
