Given its original purpose and not the reasons people seem to think it was worn; it was literally just a way to alter a person's figure so as to look more flattering in a dress. Like a belt is pretty frequently used to tighten up a man's gut to make him appear vaguely more flattering.(Granted, it's not the original purpose of a belt, but I think it speaks to the void we have between items of clothing for males and those for females. E.G. A woman in a corset is sexual, but a completely shirtless man is just fine.)
