A suggestion for a change to PVP related commendations

  • A small suggestion that I think would be a good edition to the game is the concept of "Either or" commendation item unlocks, meaning that in order to unlock an item, you could do either one of two commendations.

Now i'm not saying that cosmetic items that are meant to be unlocked via PVP should be obtained purely through PVE means, but that the option should be there to either go through relatively easy PVP means, or a hell of a grind for PVE

The best example that I can give for this is the Bone and Blade skeleton curse heads. In order to unlock the skulls you are required to complete the "Reaper Rivals" commendation (sell 15 stollen skulls of the banished) which on paper doesn't seem that difficult. That is till you consider that nobody does these voyages anymore, or the ones that do the voyage are so few and far between that it is akin to being impossible to complete the requirements to unlock these items

So this is my proposal, I suggest that Items like the Bone and Blade skulls should be unlockable via the "reaper Rivals" commendation or the "Dastardly Desecration" (complete all "search for ancient secrets" commendations)

Meaning that these items are still obtainable via PVP means, or a longer PVE grind in relation.

A change like this I feel would not only allow these items to be more available to players, but in edition get more people doing the reaper voyages to begin with to encourage more PVP to begin with.

  • Depending on the voyage maybe, yes.

If one requires PvP for a item, that someone else has to be doing. Yes make sense. The voyage may need a update/change.

But not all PvP related commendations.

  • The bigger problem i have is that there are commendations that require hourglass curses outside of the hourglass section. And well for two reasons:

    1. Hourglass has a very low playerbase, mostly containing either very high skilled players or cheaters. For most casual players therefore it's a very harsh to toxic environment (also making it so it's extremely difficult to get those curses) and very different then the average adventure PvP experience.
    2. It's only 1 side of the hourglass that has these commendations (only the Reapers side), making it also problematic for hourglass itself, since it makes it so players are more incentiviced to do Reaper's then Athena's (no reason to get the Athena-curse outside of the hourglass sections, while the Reapers have multiple non-hourglass sections that require their curse). Basicly it makes it look like Rare wants to force a 'winning' side in hourglass by doing this.
  • PvP vs PvE is frankly beside the point.
What it comes down to is simply "no commendation should be functionally unobtainable due to requiring action from other players".

You can't steal the thing if nobody is initially getting it.
You can't recover your stolen treasure if nobody stole it.
You can't do anything with treasure maps if nobody buries treasure, takes maps off the post, or otherwise does anything with them.
You can't defend yourself if nobody attacks you.

Whatever arbitrary examples you can think of, we shouldn't be rendered unable to accomplish any given goal because other players aren't doing something.
You just know there's players using alliance servers for pvp commendations, not to avoid fighting for real, but simply because without getting a group on the alliance server to trade commendations, they'll never find any players doing the actions required for the commendation to be obtainable.

  • @super87ghost Rare definitely favours reapers over athena. There's more than 2x as many reaper HG cosmetics as athena HG cosmetics. They haven't added anything to athena past 200 and the only things that carry to 200 are one ship set and the mysterious stranger clothing set. Nowhere near as cool as the skeleton cosmetics. Also gold bones looks better than gold ghost by a lot.
