[Updated] Friendly Fire - Player Option - Allow Damage from Crew On/Off

  • As a general reminder to all:

Please avoid engaging in personal arguments and derailing the topic of the thread. It is fine to debate the content of the post, and the viewpoints therein, but disrespecting any of your fellow pirates personally is against the pirate code, and our forum rules.

Any further off-topic/personal bickering posts will be removed.

Anybody continuing after, will also be removed.

  • I like this idea u can have it as a personal toggle like in skull and bones with its opt in pvp. and it will only do anything if there is another crew member who has it toggled on as well. i mean I don't see how that can be abused when if u don't want to fight your crew just don't turn it on

  • I love the smell of blunder bombs in the morning…

  • Absolutely no reason to add it - and I bet that's Rare's stance on it as well, because you don't gain anything by fighting your crew.

And before you say practice - well, queue up for HG, and you'll have all the practice you need.

This game has no competitive scene, so the entire premise of "training" by fighting your own crew instead of enemy crews is pointless. What are you training for? 😂

It's a cartoon pirate game, not a DotA, CS or WoW tournament. Doesn't even have a ranking system.

Chill and enjoy the game, you're taking it too seriously lol

    EDIT:

This game has no competitive scene

This could potentially change when they release private servers, though I seriously doubt it. If they released them 4-5y ago it would've had a better chance.

Good call out, Skull & Bones is a great example, though the games are vastly different.

In a game that prides itself on being a pirate sandbox, adding tools and systems to allow players to play the way they want to play and create fun stories together...there's no reason this option should not exist.

I can't think of a reason not to add this as an option. It would hurt nothing in the game, it would only add an optional fun element with your crew. Heck, you could even go as far as to being a "hard mode" crew that keeps friendly fire on at all times just for the challenge and fun of it. I personally think it would be a hilariously fun time to be in an epic PvP battle with another ship and accidentally kill my friend or get killed by my friend.

Again, 100% optional, which is why I can't understand anyone disagreeing with this. You don't have to use the system, but why in the world would anyone be against the option being available? I haven't heard a legitimate argument as to why this shouldn't be added as an OPTION.

If you don't like it, don't turn it on? It should be an option though, it would open up countless fun opportunities with your crew.

I've been absolutely dying to spar with my own friends since launch in this game, and currently the only way to do that is to convince another ship to invite you to their party/ship and leave your current party/ship. It's not about training or practicing, sure you could do that. I just want to have fun fighting my friends.

I want to play around with this someday, I really really hope someday this is an option in Sea of Thieves, it's the last and final thing I've been dying for since the game has launched.

There's plenty of reason to add it.

And before you say practice - well, queue up for HG, and you'll have all the practice you need.

HG can be good practice, but it doesn't necessarily train TDM unless you organize it with another boat.

More importantly, already having ways of practicing isn’t a reason not to add more options for practicing that can make the game more fun for different players.

Why limit the flavors of ice cream?

This game does have a competitive scene. While it has certainly diminished since the removal of Arena and the downfall of NAL, it certainly still exists in forms like League of Thieves.

TDMers would also benefit by being able to scrim on their own boats instead of needing to hijack another boat or spike a server.

While those examples are beside the point because they are minorities in the community, the ultimate reason why people would generally want to "train" is just to be able to learn and protect themselves out on the seas in a controlled environment where they can have a buddy moderate the difficulty with no desire to do anything competitive.

Maybe a more experienced player wants to teach a swabbie the nuances of the sword lunge, a FF option would be of great benefit there

Exactly, a chill pirate game where it's ok to be goofy and mess around with your crew from time to time. It's fun to have the option to RP duels and mutinies. A FF toggle would be fun for the same reasons adding card games or dice games would be fun: it gives people another excuse to interact with their crew.

Worries about a FF option generally boil down to a fear that it will be abused by trolls, which can so easily be avoided by good game design like opting in and out by individuals or locking it behind an emote that two people must mutually agree to.

And if you don't find value in being able to shoot your own crew, you can just opt to never have FF on.

A FF toggle = tools, not rules

I say this discussion extents to locked armories. It can be fun to allow another crew to use your armory by toggling it even if it doesnt provide a direct benefit to you.

  • @tesiccl then vote them in the brig

  • Knife fights in the lower decks. Crew dueling tournaments. Settling debates the pirate way. PvP training with friends. Lots of harmless fun for crews who want it, and totally optional.
