I know it probably a SONY decision but something like a weapon set recolor being exclusive to a console is just asinine
Limiting the pre-order cosmetics to PS5 is ridiculous
@turdhurricane7
Not a somy decision a Rare/Microsoft decision. And its not a first for sea of thieves:
-
original pre-orders that are not available anymore and exclusive to windows store/xbox players
-
the Duke shipset only for pkayers that where able to play on a Xbox Series console during a set period of time
-
several cosmetics tied to hardware purchases like:
Midnight/obsidian blunderbuss (hard drive)
Ferryman set (controller)
And probably more that in missing
It happens

- Ferryman Set Made only if you Pre ordered the limited edition xbox controller
- Black Dog Pack, Only Aquired in Beta
- Day One EyePatch
- Launch Crew Eye of Reach
Just a few things...
The difference being is if you have any of those cosmetics you can still use them in the PS5 version if you link accounts. The Ruby Viper/Dauntless stuff being locked down to PS5 and made unavailable when you go back to Xbox/PC is ridiculous
Personally, I think this decision is a thank you and farewell to the PS5 players who dedicated their time and effort to play on a different console. And for their effort, they get to keep their progress etc and a thank you for it (if they pre-order etc) - I think it’s a nice gift considering. Does it leave the rest of us miffed? Slightly, but bringing the game to PS5 wasn’t for us, it was for them.
@reverend-toast said in Limiting the pre-order cosmetics to PS5 is ridiculous:
So you are saying they should just have it be the pre-order cosmetics be the Black Jack set from the original release!
NOTE: If you want the weapon set, you can also pre-order the game on PS5 to get it.
No we are saying that if we pre-order the game on PS5, we should be able to use those cosmetics in the PC/Xbox version of the game if we link accounts. This is not the case and it's ridiculous
Disappointing that this information has taken so long as be released. Especially since the question of cross compatibility of cosmetics was asked as soon as it is revealed that there were going to be cosmetics included in the bundles.
I own a PS 5 and have preordered. So if I load my Xbox Pirate into the PS5 version set sail on my guild ship I created with my Xbox friends. Apply the Dauntless sails to it. Leave and sail on Xbox on the same guild ship. Will the Dauntless sails I applied as Captain still be equipped?
As someone with mild cerebral palsy I find the offset sticks on the Xbox controller more comfortable to use. I shouldn't be forced to be uncomfortable because i want to use a set of sails.
Whoever took this decision to limit pre-order swag to PS5, after such a huge deal was made to mention cross over progression with MS accounts, messed up big time. All those numbers that guaranteed SOT to have best sales for PS5 were partially made from Xbox and PC players trying to get day one cosmetics.
They practically begged Xbox and PC players to connect their MS account with their Sony account and now after all this time, the fact that pre-order cosmetics are exclusive to PS5 was revealed. There will be a lot of unsatisfied players from this arbitrary decision!
Being real here, this is probably one of the few cases where im fine with the exclusive cosmetics. PS players had no chance at the original pre order items, so this is their chance to give them something that is not really super huge.
This is not the first time a game has given a separate release their own unique limited items if they had no chance to get something before. Warframe had a founder pack that offered a limited edition item, the game was not available in china for years, and when it released, they gave the chinese build a special founders item as well.
It is imo fair, and this is not an isolated case.
I think there are people unaware of this new information:
Only cosmetics and items obtained through platform-exclusive offers may not be fully equippable across different devices. For instance, the Duke ship cosmetics linked to the Xbox Series X|S launch won't be usable on PS5. Similarly, items like the Ruby Viper cosmetics or Dauntless Adventurer Closed Beta rewards, exclusive to PlayStation pre-order campaigns, won't be equippable on Xbox or Steam.

@goldsmen Nah, not allowing us to equip cosmetics we own is just plain stupid.
As far as i could tell by the original post, he had issue with an exclusive to the pre order for ps, it didnt really read as issue with exclusivity to only a set console even if you own the items the way its worded. As well i heard nothing but random claims that it was exclusive to the console its self and not just owning it until just seeing sandmans post quoting the source.

Yeah I am not sure if it was Sony's or Microsoft's pettiness that caused this decision, but the result is that I (and many others) will cancel our pre-orders and won't be playing SOT on our PS5s at all. Oh well.
I was excited to hop on the Beta to show my brother the ropes, but...RIP.

I have a feeling it was likely playstation cause lately sony seems to just be extremely weird about anything cross platform. Not to mention microsoft has literally nothing to lose if people get the game on ps since they still get paid either way, and sony seems to be more on the side of exclusivity than microsoft lately.
They stated that the duke set will locked to the xbox as it has the Xbox logo on it. Did you read somewhere that the same thing would apply to the ruby viper set?

Sony is definitely the reason for these new restrictions.
Nevermind, I kept scrolling and found my answer....sucks! looks like an awesome set.
@metal-ravage said in Limiting the pre-order cosmetics to PS5 is ridiculous:
It's not the exclusivity of the set, it is the way they decided to disclose this information after all this time that is outrageous.
100%.
Luckily, I was able to easily cancel my pre-order through PS Support. My reason, when they asked why I was cancelling, was "Sony's or Microsoft's decision to make pre-order and beta cosmetics unequippable cross platform." I was not met with any pushback LOL
While I do believe it was Sony's pettiness that got us here this late in the game, I do believe part of the reason is because Rare 100% knew that a bunch of current players would pre-order the game on PS and it would over-inflate the success of opening the game to PS.
It's all a numbers game.
I cant understand why anyone cares about what cosmetics playstation fans get. Its impossible to actually care about some cosmetics when Rare is treating Xbox playing long term customers like 2nd class citizens compared to these new playstation players. Its a straight slap in the face to allow that console full opt out of crossplay while failing to deliver it for xbox despite having promised it.
ITS WILD that people are worrying about cosmetics when actual matters of feature parity and player choice are being fudged up by rare.
@pithyrumble said in Limiting the pre-order cosmetics to PS5 is ridiculous:
Oh I'm definitely blaming this on Sony lol.
Eehhh...here's my (speculative) timeline that got us here:
1). Microsoft decides to open up a few exclusives to Sony in order to prevent Sony from roadblocking any future acquisitions
2). Microsoft (and Rare) realize they can artificially boost how successful opening up SOT to PS looks by announcing exclusive cosmetics that they know the existing playerbase will spend the money on.
3). Rare announces the stipulations for the cosmetics being locked out of cross platform.
But here's the part we don't know...at some point Sony said "No. Platform exclusive cosmetics need to be locked to that platform"
The question is...did Sony make those rules before #2 in the timeline...or after?
I'd like to think it was afterwards...but...we'd be naïve to think that Microsoft isn't also run by a bunch of ya know.
@sweetsandman said in Limiting the pre-order cosmetics to PS5 is ridiculous:
3). Rare announces the stipulations for the cosmetics being locked out of cross platform.
And that is when absurdity comes to play in all this. What they are practically saying is that you can purchase something for a game you like, yet you are not allowed to use your purchase unless you play the game under the system they decided.
All this while you have to link the same MS account you have been using the whole time. 🤦

This thread's definition of "outrageous" and "petty" and "irony" are all fascinating.
Looking at "petty" specifically, I'm curious what word you would use to describe: putting business differences ahead of not only the consumer, but also easy revenue.

Is this like some console war thing? I keep seeing these entitled post about some cosmetics that “we demand we get too!” Do we really care this much?
PC player here with popcorn. You guys might not notice it, but there’s some underlining console hate within all of these post, lol.
Console players have animosity towards one another because of exclusives.
Console players have animosity towards PC players because they're the reason we need anti-cheat 😅

Hey the cheat part is fair. Blame the little insecure frauds who for some reason buy cheats in a pirate game 😂
The console thing is funny to me, though. Even when it was announced that Xbox was allowing some exclusives to go to PS5, I was seeing articles and YouTube vids by Xbox players who were just outraged, and that’s a world I’ll never understand lol. Perhaps if they were Microsoft shareholders and they believed this move would lower their shares worth, that would justify some of the outrage. Otherwise, who cares? Anyway, a bit off topic. These PS5 cosmetic post give me console war vibes.
