My friends and I love the boat cannon battles! That the best part of the game, by far. Chasing down an enemy boat, firing at their ship and watching it fall apart is very exciting. The worst part of the game is getting boarded (easily) by more experienced players who then use their sword fighting skills (I HATE the sword mechanics in this game) to hack us to pieces, repeatedly, until we are cursing and/or rage quitting. Please make the game easier for the non-experienced players by adding a retractable ladder. That will give us a fighting chance to have more fun, and put our ever-increasing cannon firing skills to the test!

Easy for you but not everyone else? Maybe?
You have the same tools as everyone. Protect your ladders. Use blunder.
And even non experience players can protect and board experience players. Works both ways.
Having your ladders retractable wouldn’t fix anything.
You be shot off your boat and can’t board your own ship. (Can’t make it crew only)Taking away the preferences of some to serve others doesn't universally make something stronger it's just removing/adding something to serve one group by penalizing another.
People choose what they want to do with their freedom of piracy. In shared combat none of us are owed. Some run, some chase, some board and engage in close combat, some naval
It's on us to fight for our preferences and styles through adapting and improving against the preferences and styles of others during combat.
imo
I feel your pain, 100%. There is nothing more annoying than losing a battle. BUT.....when you start winning your battles based off the experiences you've learned, the excitement and accomplishment sky rockets.
Learn some maneuvering tactics to minimize their ability to board. Knowing how to steer your ship is at least as important as knowing how to fire those canons.
Getting the right angle on them, using those chain-balls, and hitting that death spiral just right and you will win every time.
Always, always, always be alert for the other party launching themselves via the canons.
Over time you'll see the patterns crews use to engage, and you'll know how to combat them.
Trust me, it is well worth it.

So when you get knocked off by a cannonball, how are you getting back on? Ending up in the sea with no way to get back on your ship doesn't sound fun either. If you or your teammate then have to spend time putting the ladders down, the attackers will be all over you by then.
I'm glad your enjoying pvp... It's just a harsh truth that TDM ers don't need to be the best at naval (but their still probably decent). Stuck to the blunder or sword (or both). Learn the mermaid sound and the sound of swimming. Good boarder wait for a moment where everyone is busy but some (one of my crewmates) are board happy and are typically free one shots... But either way I'm glad you are enjoying the pvp system just got to find a way to counter the other. Happy Sailing
It's just a matter of expecting them. I've been called a hacker a number of times because I predict board strats (very over used strat btw). Listen for the sound of a higher pitch cannon shot, that's them firing out to board you, watch for mermaids in the water and have the helmsmen with one eye on the ladders. Expect a board and they don't catch you off guard. Keep your ship at a distance and engage from long range, very hard to board you from that distance and if they try they're leaving the vessel undermanned.
unfortunately sinking a ship via naval only is almost impossible if its the same ship type fighting. if the other crew is competent at some point you will have to board them to stop them repairing/bucketing. so removing ladders makes that so much harder to actually pull off and would result in the fight basically being a fight of attrition

If you make ladders retractable then we need another way to board other then cannons.
And if you do that and think guarding ladders is to difficult then wait till someone climbs up the back of the ship while someone misses ladder on purpose and climbs up bowsprint while the 3rd just goes up ladder
They did it on my boat last week in the arena. And I was like, "Where did this guy come from?" Because I saw him in the water and miss the stairs. I was still staring down the stairs for a good 10 seconds

I keep falling in the sea, Rare, please take away the sea...
We boutta’ do a Subnautica bug and fall to our death in the ocean!
@lackbarwastaken please tell me that was satire.... because if not that is the literal stupidest thing I've ever heard anyone say 😂
@avacadobeard244 dude im NOT joking the waves mess up my aim if it wasnt for that i would hit every shot
@lackbarwastaken alr alr alr.... so your telling me... that rare needs to get rid of the sniper and the FREAKING OCEAN.... so you can better blast a circle of pain into someone's hull? Aight I getchu, makes sense.
@lackbarwastaken and yknow what, while we are at it, night time is too dark in sot and the wind is never on my side so why don't we just get rid of that too. I'm starting to like this way of thinking.
@lackbarwastaken not disagreeing just better understanding. If we didn't have the ocean we wouldn't be having problems so your right.
