Loot box system

  • I would like to know the opinion of other players about the introduction of loot boxes in the game,I'll explain this idea better and how it would work in sea of thieves.

First of all, it must be said that loot boxes are not a bad thing, only when they use real money and are abusive. I'm proposing is to use the game money (gold) to get cosmetic items and voyages.

    alt text

Packages(stylized to SOT molds) would be sold by Duke or in the pirate shop on the game menu, after opening it you will receive an item. Items would be divided by rarity.

    • Some examples of awards:

Common Items: All items that are already on sale in the game, clothing, parts of the ship, instruments and other.

Items from the old DLCs and adventures of the Bilge Rats: All items that are limited (including voyages), some examples are, megalodon prow figure, hallowen pitches and others. People receive only part of the set, for example, only the figurehead of Bone Crusher, not the complete set.

Exclusive Items: Items created exclusively for loot box packages would not be made available in any other way in the game. For example, a curse covering the player's body of scales or a voyage that provides 5 athenas chest.

Voyages: Missions could also be found in the packages, all with maximum level and even Athena(Very rare).

    • What could not be found in the boxes:

Ghost Clothes, Arena Clothes, Tell Tales Items and Items that are on sale in the game and need commendations.

Please, I want to spend my money.

  • No thank you. I don't like loot boxes and don't want them. There's my opinion on the matter.

  • Absolutely not. Lootboxes should not come anywhere near SoT.

  • Idk man, the loot box controversy that EA dealt with for Battlefront 2 about killed the game at launch. Gamers I don't think are fans of loot boxes. I do like how Rare plans to introduce Pets for real world money to help pay for future expansions of the game and even though I'm a bit salty that Rare nerf the original Commendations after 7 months of being live I want to support this game so I plan to purchase a pet. But loot boxes? Nah, not for me man. Good post tho!

  • Somebody clearly missed the part where lootboxes are banned in some countries and that there is currently legislation being examined in the U.S. which would take similar action against predatory monetization schemes in games...

If you're looking for a money sink, I'll hit you with my PayPal.

  • Did anyone shooting this down read that it wouldn't cost real money?

I'm not a fan of loot boxes at all. Especially the paid kind. However, I am not opposed to a well thought out version that utilizes in-game funds that cannot be derived from real world currency.

  • @lleorb
No past bilge rat cosmetics, but maybe this could be done by raiding gold hoarders for keys to chests. I had a post for this a while back(look at my account).

  • I had a notion that the word "loot box" would cause such reactions.

So that they understand better what I mean, the system I am talking about is similar to what happens in Rainbow six siedge with the Alpha Packs, they are bought with money from the game and they give you cosmetic items, some that are available for sale and others do not.

  • @blazedrake100 the cosmetics of the past DLCs that were achieved through the basement mice.

    Basement mice?

  • Lootboxes would make this game illigal pretty soon where I live and lootboxes are the worst Idea the gaming industry has ever had, so it's a huge no for me.

OMG soooo true, PayPal is the worst! I used them when I did a lot of reselling on eBay but got sick of eBay and PayPal both up'ing their fees constantly to the point where it became harder and harder to make a profit.

But yeah spot on how a lot of countries and how US is working on or implement laws against these so yeah.

  • @lleorb I would LOVE if we could actually dig up a chest filled with actual loot (ya know like a loot box). The idea of being able to buy a chest filled with loot just kinda makes sense. The most important part of adding a system like this, would be ensuring certain items never appear in these loot boxes. So no curses or tall tale cosmetics for example.

I think the most important part of a loot box system in sea of thieves is making it an actual thing in the game. Like you go to the loot store to buy a loot chest (using gold or $) and open it in game. That way you can try on your new cosmetics right away and decide if you want to purchase another one, go hunting for a loot box or just focus on the usual stuff.

  • @hynieth What I'm proposing has nothing to do with the abusive loot boxes that some companies use. As I said up there, it would be something like Alpha Packs in Rainbow six siedge game, far from using real money. Unfortunately many have read the title and have already thought about what EA was doing.

  • @lleorb one word NO!

  • @lleorb Lootboxes are already Illigal in Belgium, the Netherlands is going to pass a bill soon. As I said, It would make the game itself illigal.
Any and all lotboxes are predatory, why sell an item for a fixed price when you can sell the chance to get that item? It's gambling and It's predatory, why people would ever like lootboxes is completely beyond me.

  • Maybe if they weren't called loot boxes. Like how about randomized gifts that cost gold? Yikes, that's a mouth full.

  • I’m pretty sure I read the post correctly that it would use in game gold to get the box. So others should learn to read the whole post and not just read the headline.

I’d be ok with some form of cache that’s purchased from Duke or some other source. The Division does this with apparel chests that you earn the ability to open through playing the game.

  • @hynieth It is not considered a crime since it does not involve real money, it is also the case of Rainbow six that despite having this system is not predatory and is not classified as loot box,is something totally extra in the game, that does not influence in any way in the gameplay.

About being predatory, I disagree, since it is something extra. It is an option to get clothes or other things. imagine the following situation:

A new player has just added 15,000 gold, he can buy a jacket or go to Duke and risk winning any item in the game. it's just an option that makes buying items totally random, the difference is that he can earn much more expensive items than 15k.

  • To incorporate something like this, whether we want it or not, Rare would have to step up their game in terms of how much content they release, and over a much shorter time-frame. Do you think they could or would even want to do that? I'm not so sure...

Also, no thank you on the lootboxes - even using gold, why trade a direct purchase for a random one?

  • Loot boxes are shortcuts.
Loot boxes are how people who don't want to spend the time EARNING what the game has as rewards can ultimately purchase instead.

The ultimate loot box is...."now that you've purchased the game at $59.99; why not spend another $179.99 and complete the game without even playing it?!"

Loot boxes are simply NOT GAMING.
    Big fat NO from me.

To me, it needs to fit into the game rather than just a grab bag for purchase.

Perhaps it comes as a rare legendary chest you can find washed up or dig up from a voyage. You have the option of selling it for a flat fee to the GH, or have them unlock it for a certain price and the contents go to you?

  • @lleorb No, I think everyone is aware what a loot box is.

  • @lleorb
I just don't want it to be like someone can get a cosmetic someone worked their butt for from random chance. It should be only exclusive cosmetics to them, such as trinkets for your ship or new clothes. Not something from bilge rats, and not things currently purchasable.

Call it whatever you want, still no.

  • i had an idea to introduce a new faction that would additionally serve the purpose of being a gold sink.

this faction would sell special voyages that would cost a great amount of gold (in game currency) than usual and each voyage would naturally lead to a special chest.

may i include the fact that these chests can be stolen by other players and are normal voyages for the purpose of preventing the system from being a "slot machine simulator" while not breaking the game's core design.

upon bringing it back to the faction, the chest will have a chance to contain one part of an exclusive cosmetic set tied to said faction. if the cosmetic is a duplicate, a sum of gold will be returned (or none at all if that is fair).

i also had the idea to include the chance of these chests containing event-exclusive cosmetics for a limited time only.

i cant find it right now, but someone also had the idea of including storage chests as voyage rewards that randomly contained certain items within (trinkets, gems, voyages, and skulls). that idea was absolutely praised and it was basically a loot box system.

EDIT: fount it. it was by Sgt Palooggoo
    New Ideas for Collector's Chests

  • This game has so many other ways to introduce random special loot, why the most trite system in modern gaming? No lootboxes outside the game, if you want microtransactions make them straightfoward, not gambling. If you want randomness, make good raondomized itemdrops with Rare's creative touch.

  • @galactic-geek Exchanging a direct purchase by random would give you the possibility of more valuable cosmetics, that is the advantage. It does not affect anyone who prefers to buy directly, it's just an option.

  • @lil-fokker You're referring to loot boxes paid for with real money, here I suggest that people buy the boxes with gold, and for that they would need to play the game.

The price could be 30k gold

  • @urihamrayne It's not micro transactions, I'm talking about a system that uses game money and is not abusive or spoils the gaming experience.

  • @lleorb The idea you have is not a bad one if indeed you mean a chest you get through gold you earn in game. As long as there is never an option to use real money or to buy gold I'd be ok with it.
I think your post is a bit misleading... at least the title. There is way too much negative connotation and perceived/actual predatory practices wrapped up in the term loot boxes. You would of been better served presenting your idea without the term. As you have read most people have a very well deserved negative view of loot boxes and the moment its mentioned the conversation will be about what traditionally loot boxes have been and are.

  • @ronin20 Yes, I have to watch the titles next time, many ended up not even reading just for having a negative(and justifiable) view of loot box. And yes, the idea I put down denies any use of real money.

  • @lleorb
If using in game gold/doubloons, Then I'd have very little issues with it.

But would have to ask....aren't they already doing that? Just not using the word loot box.
You simply buy what you want/can afford.
Items come and go and have some promotional ties.

  • @lil-fokker The loot box system is simply buying a box, package or letter and receiving one or more random items. It does not involve real money , It does not involve real money, but the terrible practices of some companies, this system is already seen with bad eyes by many.

The advantage of buying a boxing inside the sea of thieves would be that you have the possibility to receive an item that is worth much more than the price you paid.

The most important and that would be something EXTRA for the game, not affecting in any way the current game, the main objective of the game is to accumulate gold, but we do not have what to spend. That would solve this problem a bit.

  • You're asking for a system that will give us random accessories and cosmetics from a company that can barely put out accessories and cosmetics as it is. I know soooo many players sitting on millions and millions of Gold with nothing to spend it on. We were lucky to get stuff once every month or two...sets stretched out over months.

How could rare possibly design enough stuff to make Lootboxes even possible?
