Content/Events Discussion - Is Rare delusional to call this content a/or events?

  • This is a question(^title^) that I and many of my friends have been wondering since the recent releases, of what they call content. That is nothing more than a simple game iteration that can be best clarified as a small side quest.

Why they have been separated into separate "Events" is beyond me. And it begs also the question what have they been doing in these two and half months, most of the content, when it's comes to customization was already was in the alpha, (from the hungering deep).

Gameplay wise it looks like, bare minimum effort. The constant overhyping and false marketing are simply destroying this game before get a chance to succeed.
(Please stop with the teasers, and make actual gameplay trailers)

Today we did the thrones event with 8 legendary players, and the whole idea was let's put these thrones on difficult places and sit on them all, then you're done. That's all there is to this latest "event". There is no second part, no boss fight, no scripted sequence, nothing. This cannot be considered a "event", or content, this is clearly bare minimum effort. As a programmer myself this is absolutely unbelievable to me.

And it begs original question: "is Rare delusional?"
Don't get me wrong I like the concept and I love playing the game, to a point. But Rare keeps adding bare minimum effort. That in my opinion an many of my friends, is just mostly frustrating and getting now to a point of anger an concern.

No boss fight, no scripted sequences or anything that creates any kind of debt to the game.
This game could be so great, but it looks like it's never going to get the opportunity if Rare can't admit the problems, or be critical about its own creation, and especially stop overhyping/lying with your marketing campaigns.

They called this medium size update (hungering deep, thrones, ...) This is not even a small update, these are simple world iterations, some little adjustments to enriched the sandbox nothing more with this level of "content".

This had to be said and please Rare, come back to earth and get your head out of the clouds.

Here someone on YouTube, that speaks to me. And sums up perfectly what's been going on with the game lately.

So what do you think? Over exaggeration, about this new content :P

@Deckhands, @Global-Moderators , ps: I hoop that we can discuss this issue that directed towards Rare's conduct, before the game dies of it. Hoping for a little bit of leeway and "freedom of speech" when it comes to this harsh but necessary criticism, that many players have.

  • I blame Microsoft but RARE is definitely not handling this IP very well at all, whether it's marketing or content. I say this all the time, but I absolutely cant "sell" SoT to anyone in my discord group aside from 3 very close friends because right now its lame and lifeless. I love it but it is.

I pray the future content drop is actually content. Depth. From the teaser though, it looks like we are just getting another dead/empty lifeless zone. I want to be wrong. I fear they will never make the world alive unfortunately and instead tack on endless gimmicks.

Edit: my brain dead critique is getting too much attention.

The game needs life. The world needs enriched. Islands should feel alive and spontaneous, brimming with both danger and adventure. One enemy type doesn't cut it at all.
Why does thieves haven not have bandits? Why not have a native threat on some Islands? Tigers? Where's the creativity in skeleton types i.e. the teleporting sorcerer or the summoner. Why does a long lost ghost not approach me seeking help to release his trapped soul? Where's the organic adventure? Where is the creativity? Why is this beautiful world not alive and fleshed out?

I do not want a new brain dead zone where I go through a brain dead and outdated dialouge quest that all leads up to fighting a brain dead skeleton lord reskin on his lifeless bullet sponge ship. I'm looking at you e3 trailer. 😂

  • Yeah skeleton thrones thing was underwhelming.

There should have been a skeleton boss/captain to fight up there. Boss could have been sitting on the throne and be activated when you go talk to him or try to sit up there.

  • @Gloog, It looks like they have no idea what to add. And yes I also blame MS for releasing SoT to early. Rare clearly needed more time to figure out, the gameplay.

  • You've just summoned the people coming with their banners and RARE coffee mugs with SoT logos you know? They think anything RARE does is perfect, pristine, can do no wrong, but you know, you're right. These events are infact quite poorly done and it is a sad attempt at trying to stave the player base from either leaving, or ringing one another's necks from boredom or tedium. However, as I said, you still have the people whom I'm dubbed "Key Jinglers." that think the game is in a perfect state and I can pretty much give certainty they will come back with "They only had a few weeks to work on it man!" just like they did THD and saying they had a month to work on it, etc.

As for the future of SoT? Well, Cursed sails adds exactly what RARE said they wouldn't add, as they wanted every ship to feel as if it was a player threat, so I'd be careful taking anything RARE says anymore seriously. Is the AI threat gonna be fun to fight? Most likely not, because all other AI controlled beasts in SoT aren't smart enough to distinguish a banana from a cannonball, so it all remains to be seen.

  • @ooo-madlax I watched most of the video you posted and while I could offer counterpoints to the narrator's "colorful" description of his experience with The Hungering Deep and Sea of Thieves in general, I'll just say I don't agree with many of his points and my experience has been entirely different.

It just comes down to personal preference: I'm still having a lot of fun with the game and I've met some really cool people, too!

I like the direction it's heading and I'm looking forward to more!

  • @landiien Don't get me wrong, I like the game too, and still play from time to time.
But this game has undeniable issues that simply get ignored or overhyped.

And if you like a direction that they're heading towards, that's just fine and your opinion. "at the moment"

  • I'll never disagree that the game would better be titled Early Access... I've long held the conspiracy theory that Rare wasn't finished with their vision of the game and Microsoft pushed them to release it anyhow for the sake of game pass. It is a finished product in the core sense... but it has always lacked content and I feel that after September... we will finally have the fuller game we've either wanted or expected since launch. I feel that this is also why the "first 3 DLC" are free.... it's not free dlc... it's Rare finishing up with the core game experience they wanted to present from the start and weren't given time to polish. Rare cannot validate this theory, it would detract from Microsoft's stance of a AAA game on game pass at launch and would make alot of people look like liars. So they simply accepted that the definition of 'final product full AAA Gamepass offering" for what we all likely feel is an empty foundation of a game (at launch). But it is coming together well overall.

How can I say it's coming together well?

Aside from the depth of the 'content release(s)' we've gotten so far... and ignoring incidental bug issues... which aren't what anyone wants and does create delays....

The content has been solid so far, I just feel that there isn't as much content per offering as many in the community would hope is presented.

The Meg fight was cool. Short lived... poor implementation on the value of repeating it (IE No reason to do it more than once) but the fight itself, was/is fun, at least enough so that most people don't seem to argue that it wasn't good... it's that there wasn't still more in the HD offering. That final bit, even I hoped the HD would offer "more", but like I said I enjoyed what WAS included!

Skeleton Thrones are just a weekly meme of content... it's not supposed to be some literal week long detailed thing, just a iteration of simplistic content to distract players for a brief period of time and highlight some smallish offerings that lasts a week... because a week long window of opportunity allows more players to goof off with the offering. No one HAS to be in game the day of the 'event' they can wait the whole week if they like.. some players might have hard times finding secondary crews to help them get their 5 'group' thrones as well so stretching it over a 'week' allows more opportunities to actually get the achievements.

But it's never meant to be a literal week of play.. its a minor event.. perhaps more in game LORE would help highlight the event as more than just some strange thing to do... but the rigmarole of the offering stands up well enough IMO.

I admit this first weekly event offering isn't very robust.. yay highchairs on rocks... neat... and perhaps they could have done something like code in some bigger obstacles, but that's not much of a complaint. That's just window dressing, personally I am happy it's not some huge fight.. I just had a huge fight with Megan... now just sailing around and finding places to screenshot and get a few presumably limited time items as a reward is just fine for me.

Offering alternative ideas, expressing a want for "BIGGER" weekly content updates... there is nothing wrong with that! At the bottom line that is all your OP is asking for, and that's fine with me! I even agree that adding different things as weeklies like massive teams of skeletons that are raiding outposts and require people to fight them to secure an outpost and preventing any gains from the outpost until the waves are cleared... would be neato (of course skeleton AI and difficulty would need be reduced in a way) and have this set of waves continue to spawn every so often until a "big bad pirate lord" NPC is killed in a battle that might require a whole server's effort... that'd be cool...

But to say that this offering 'doesn't hold up' is simply expecting more than really needs to expected. Weekly events are meant to be tiny somewhat insignificant offerings that might serve to distract a player from their usual play patterns for a brief amount of time... and the event should last long enough that the advertised 4 million players can get a chance to log on despite potential real world delays in play or other factors such as players who only play an hour or so at a time.

This post would line up perfectly with my perceptions if it were remarking upong the hungering deep ALONE.. even I feel that the HD offering should have changed the game on fundamental ways such as offering immediate quests beyond the single quest we recieved, changed the persistent game world rules (as they did briefly with the sharks who are no longer an issue) or perhaps added a whole new type of persistent enemies OTHER than a single 'big shark" such as mermaids or similar. That is a fine expectation for the HD offerings...

But the weeklies? not so much.

Instead I would encourage others to continue to come up with ideas for weeklies that hallmark not only a players expectations, but also desires. This will help Rare to attune the events to better interest us.. which is something they actually want to do!

But to chide this offering? Is to expect too much from a mere weekly event... it's meant to be somewhat ignorable and missing out isn't meant to rob anyone of the overall value of the offerings.

To the OP's defense I really simply believe the OP is just asking for a different vision of events which may come down the road.. and I can sympathize that this event may not be a big whoopie for some players.. but it's just a weekly... they aren't supposed to be that big of a deal.

  • @ooo-madlax Well, I hope you find in the near future that your opinion about the game "at the moment" starts to sound more like mine!

  • Yeah as far as slamming the HD i get it, there wasn't alot of fleshed out lore or action events when hunting for the Meg clues. However it was still fun and I had alot of interesting encounters with other players searching for clues.
Thrones event, dude chill out its the first event, it explores opportunities for hilarious things to happen with other crews.
Overall this game is silly/fun, and the direction the devs are heading are reinforcing that. Do i think they can do alot more to make more in depth content sure and i think they will. This conversation is important but should be taken with a grain of salt and not with buckets. Enjoy the game for what it is (or don't play) because now is all we have.

  • After this "weekly" if you can call it that way (each 2 weeks as rare stated now after a good marketing again..) Rare just shown me what they realy are.
yes game came with no content i was hoping for their promises and THD as they hyped it up and was dissapointed and yes straight as lied to from the hype and their marketing efforts:teasing, making new ui for the site and game, speaking about update and so much mechanics to the game, cosmetics , new threat.. wich all ended with ALPHA cosmetics and a Megaledon developed in 2.5months followed by text books along the way.
this weekly update broke it to the end i lost all hype or hope in anything rare says "WEEKLY" events wich will be EACH 2 WEEKS isn't WEEKLY.
DELAYING the update for 2 DAYS becouse of 10 CHAIRS on Islands and couple of cosmetics (4) is A JOKE i bet they started to work on the update on 12th.
yet they hype this update even more with video's when its actually nothing but sitting on 10 chairs and calling it adventure and exploration for me seems like rare doesn't learn anything why would ppl go after week and help others if they get nothing ? thats the whole problem meg had and they never spoke about it, simply said in E3 "everyone liked the THD" no rare the realy is the majority didn't.
i am just done with this game i made 40 new friends when i started and i walk out as only 3 ppl of them log in to play SoT now and then i think we are just being lied to over and over and over again there is no effort put from rare's side sry

  • @blooddoll22 You make valid points, and this wouldn't be a problem if they didn't over hype this so extremely. Like it's the next big thing coming towards SoT, this only damages the title for the long run. Because eventually no one's gonna listen anymore and will move on to the next game.

That is what I personally many others have problems with. A bit more honesty and humility is all we ask for from Rare. "Tell players what to expect honestly" instead of overhyping over exaggerating the facts when we are actually doing it ingame and it's way of the mark with the reality.

  • @blooddoll22 I do agree with most of what you said.

I continue to run into peaople complaining that the updates are too small or you don't get enough for killing the Megalodon or that the Thrones are irritating and you don'T really get anything for it. What all of them seem to lack to realize is, this game is supposed to be for having fun with friends, goofing off, having a social experience. All while enjoying sneaking on other ships or just straight forward killing them to get their loot or just go on voyages and steal that hidden treasure from those long dead pirates.

The devs said from the beginning that all future content is included in the initial purchase and that weekly updates are little time limited events with some fun content. Again, something to keep you busy while you wait for the next big thing.

In the end the games "reward" is not some huge treasure but rather the knowledge that "you did it". For me the figurehead reward for killing the megalodon was really just a little bonus, the real reward was the experience of fighting the Megalodon.

This is all a thing of taste. I personally think for example that "Truck Simulator" or Bus or Farm or whatever simulators are the most boring "games" ever made. I got one once because it was on sale for literally peanuts and after realising that it really meant just driving a truck for houres at end I was like: I can get in my RL car and have a ride outside with friends going for a drink (obviously not driving afterwards!) or something. Why would I sit in my room, alone, infront of a comuter for this? But there are obviously people who play it since they never stop making them.

  • @z3ro-upshaw The interesting thing in your post "The devs said from the beginning that all future content is included in the intial purchase and the weekly updates are limited events, with some fun and content. Again, something to keep you busy while you wait for the next big thing."

See, the problem with this statement alone is that the game didn't launch with much content as it was, so people are infact going to judge the size/playability/replayability of any and all content that is presented to them, including the weeklies. When you make a weekly and it takes less than an hour or two to finish, or even a full blown expansion or as you know it THD and people do it in a few hours? Well, that's a problem, isn't it?

With the updates broken down to a few months apart and using the weeklies as I said, to try and stave off people leaving the game, or just doing random things out of boredom or tedium, then you have a recipe for disaster. Last I checked SoT isn't a free to play game, if it gets dailies, weeklies and a cashshop, they might as well put the price to nothing, offer something special to people who bought the game and let the game prosper that way because the "Unique ip" is starting to fade into the crowd of clones.

  • @z3ro-upshaw Yes I agree the game should be fun and a social experience this is not it.
Bringing players together is a good thing, however this short-term one-time only "event" is not the way to do it.

There is simply no effort put into these events, especially if they're coming up with sitting together in a chairs is a good thing to hype people up about.

And here are thought they going something with the other forts in the game together with some kind of chair activation, with difficult boss fight, with some actual fun gameplay.

  • My whole problem with those rather lackluster updates wouldn't be even the updates by themselves. I understand in a company there are people doing different kind of jobs and it is important keeping the player base informed, but it really just feels out of place. We get hyped up for weeks by getting developer updates, twitter and even a dedicated website for the hungering deep. The only thing achieved by that, at least in my case, is that my hopes get shattered by every update. To get around that issue i would suggest being more specific about what will and won't get and not trying to hype as many as possible into buying SoT.

The concept of the game itself is a good one and it actually has potential, but like most of us already said it just has a vacuum where the content should be. In my opinion the main focus of development should be adding at least something to keep players occupied by adding something meaningful and not 20 lines of code and 2 3D models that are more of a token. Add a short story, an interesting event like a small boss fight and even if that wouldn't be possible in 2 weeks of programming just make a statement that you need a week or 2 more and everyone would understand that.

@Kashaarafall already said this game is getting judged at this exact moment and every step that is taken right now contributes to either the success or downfall of this game and seeing what is happening right now i have to say the downfall is more likely than a success would be.

  • @ooo-madlax I don't actually disagree on the 'advertising/hype' bit. I mean, they haven't actually ever suggested there was more in any of their updates than what we got. I fell into that rabbit hole in the past myself. If you really look back at the videos and teasers and such... there is nothing to imply more than we've ever gotten.

The skeleton highchairs are a good example..

they literally said there'd be chairs in the world you gotta find, maybe take a selfie with, and that'd you'd get rewarded in a minor way, and they wanted to have crews work together for some of them.

That's all they've been saying since they first announced the event, and this was mentioned several weeks before even HD was fleshed out.

Now they're here and well... they're exactly how they said they'd be. Chairs in places in the world where you'd cannon over or otherwise clamor up to, possibly take a selfie, and go get some clothes for your efforts.

The actual point of the OP still stands... ya want more from the offerings we get.

That is a perfectly reasonable statement. I too would like to see "more" from the weeklies, but we have very little idea what form the weeklies will take through the life of the game. I can say this...

They will be inconsequentially small, as weeklies are meant to be. This doesn't invalidate what you might want! It just reminds that at least this forumite... doesn't think they'll ever be much to write home about in the long run.

The offerings such as the upcoming cursed sails and such...

They need to be soooooo much 'bigger' than HD ever pretended it was...

But were I you I'd prepare for exactly this and nothing more:

AI Ships with skeleton crews, ones you may not be able to board, and likely won't have interactive items/supplies on them.

    and later

    New empty map locations

likely followed up with weeklies that ask you to find something, and items you can wear once you do.

(This isn't talking about the shops that are commonly mentioned with pets or any of that other window dressing we may see one day)

I really think the bottom line of thoughts as mentioned above are the same: Many players want more substantive offerings brought to Sea of Thieves.

Sad truth is... unless it's all been developed already and we're just waiting on them to drip the content into the game, much of what players are asking for wouldn't even be possible till at least another year after launch date. They've said it themselves, the upcoming content is still being developed, how can it be then that we'd get even BIGGER weeklies (etc) than we already have seen when what we have seen is taking the whole team to produce as is?

Meg was a "medium" update in size compared to what they want to offer... whatever medium means...

It offered a few items and a shark... with a tiny quest associated with it.

That took a couple of months to get into the game. How is it we might expect a weekly event to be on that 'scale'? They can't likely produce a new 'boss' on the scale of meg that took two months to add in... every week or two... it's not impossible but they'd need have teams on that already.

So I'm not sure it's fair to expect much more than reskinning of what we've seen offered in game already, that is... randomly offered new items... new clothes/colors/skins and such.... and a new non AI changes once in a while.

If HD was a 'medium" offering... and the patches are small offerings (The ones with items and such like the thones)... then what's a large offering? Well my mind leaps to the idea that we might get... two megaladons and 8 items introduced to the game with interactive quality... packaged around 2 quests and a content experience that lasts maybe 2 play sessions of effort.

If I had it my way we'd have:

World scattered NPC quest givers.. even if they just scrambled the current 'voyage types' and remarked on them in a lore driven way I'd be happy.

Centralized outpost of a large enough scale that players would need to visit this psudo continent commonly to better enforce crossing another players path

More active built in lore that was more than just 'words to read' but actually was connected to in game play and required an understanding of to progress instead of just a skim over to the forums or a view of reddit.

Wider variety of NPC monster types, mermaids would be perfect and fans have theorized this since pre-launch, animals or monstrous versions of them would be cool, and flying enemies would be even better.

    A couple more ship types

and the rest ... for me... would be small quality of life things that I wouldn't be surprised make it in game in the future such as changing my characters hair colors, or even changing my characters actual look (repicking from the wheel for example would be nice), pets (they've said we will get them eventually), some magical way of finding people for the multi crew offerings before the game starts... or at least easier ways to find them in game beyond sailing and hoping you can make friends... and so much more...

None of the above posts are unfair statements of want...

But I wouldn't hold my breath... there aren't enough bananas in the world for what people are really asking for.

  • I didn't personally mind finding chairs and going to sit in there but at least make it interesting? The only neat one was in a cave under the water and the rest were wait till you and whoever else was with you to shoot themselves up onto a rock that was fairly easy to miss at most times and hope for the best and that each top didn't take you more than 30 minutes.

I want to enjoy and play this game and I have put many hours into it with my husband and friends but this really isn't going to keep me coming back. Sure I wasted the better part of a day to get all the chairs and to get the so called limited items for this week but really... Give me something more interactive like sit in the chair and fight something or even the other way around.. fight something to sit in the chair. I just don't think this was really thought out and it feels rather rushed. Maybe having weekly events is putting too much stress on the team and even if it is not they are not showing mucch promise to say the least.

  • @blooddoll22 well, they already anounced there will be two new shipclasses, the figgate and the man o war. I am actually more interested in the frigate personally since it seems to combine speed and manuverability rather than pure brute force.

I do agree, that if there weren't much social interaction the updates so far would be rather annoyingly small, however, the fact that you actually have to work together with other crews does make it interesting (at least for me) because you meet new people and we are encouraged not to just shoot on sight all the time. Sure, I don't mind a good pvp, in fact I hope at some point Rare will allow private servers or server selection so that community organized events such as the thieves gauntlet can thrive more, but I think Rare is doing a decent job at making the game more social while still keeping you weary of the danger of the other crew betraying you. As long as players remain respectful and don't take the game too serious (I mean, you can shoot yourself outa cannons and bananas replace medicine, bandages, a blood drip and help you breath underwater).

I do agree, that the thrones are sorta annoying at times, but still, you get to sail around the map and find new areas of the islands you never really thought about or knew about (I didn't know there are underwater caves for example).

In the end it is, again, up to the player if he sais: "I am in it for the reward" or "I am in it for the fun."

  • This may be one of the first times I have some negative to say about the game but... I was disappointed that there was no scripted sequence for this quest.
Simply having the commendations there on our rep screen to try and work out for ourselves was not, in my mind the best move.

With regards to the topic title though, yes, we can call it content because it IS new content (albeit minimal in this case) THD was small, but it had character and a nice new encounter at the end (I hope mini-meg will appear soon).
Also, is it an event? Yes, it is something new, that distracted folks from forts, grinding and PVP for a little while, so ling may Rare continue to push out these small additions.

I would just like some new additions to stick within the main game loop so that we can diversify our voyaging a little more.

  • @Blooddoll22, Here you go, what do you call this /, advertising&hyping

I just disagree, it's the way they bringing it, that is unacceptable. (This is just a little game iteration) should not be marketing on this whatsoever. If it was a surprise, it would not have this kind of backlash. It's simply an extremely lazy attempt, even more so than the hungering deep was.

@Mistoes, We feel your pain, many of us think the same way and the majority doesn't take time to post anything on the forums because they don't even believe anymore in this game. I'm still hoping that they can turn around in time, but Microsoft Studios or any game published by them seems to fail miserably because of pushed out releases.

@Sshteeve, I am generally critical about the game, it's not by choice sadly enough.
I really wish this game to succeed, however the game developers seem to be all over the place when it comes to focus on things and what is important and things that are clearly not.

I also would disagree to call this content or a event, even though it's has been set up like that. It still bare minimum effort, for something more or less thats only little tiny adjustment or addition towards the sandbox itself.

Putting 10 chairs in annoying places cannot be called content. It's the same like putting 10 extra ammo boxes on different islands you won't even notice it unless it has been highlighted like this is.

This should've only been put into the patch notes nothing more. No marketing, no videos about it, and don't make it a so-called Event out of it. This is something that could've been added persistently throughout the world for the entire game lifecycle, to create a little bit of distraction without the hype.

  • @ooo-madlax If you hand someone a bag of chips and all that's left is crumbs, technically it still "contains" something.

I think it's worth mentally dividing large events from the small ones- that is, anything they mentioned in the roadmap (Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores) when those drop they should enrich the game in some way, whether it be a new gameplay mechanic or an "AI threat".
The smaller events are just the bi-weekly filler- perhaps adding some small mechanics (bilge rat doubloons) but I think its mostly just to keep people placated while they work on the big stuff.

  • @ooo-madlax nothing wrong with disagreement my man! Since this is a discussion forum, I'd like to continue to counterpoint, since we still haven't come to a shared perspective. Just know I'm not trying to be a meanie or anything with my continued back and forth.

The video shows the bilge rat and says he can help direct you on the quest. He does that by instructing you a tad in the dialogue and having the items for sale. The video cuts to you sailing until they find a throne. Then it shows the throne and says, find the thrones. Then the video cuts to cannon firing oneself to the throne. It shows the player missing the mark several times until they finally land on it. Then it closes with a tiny taunt suggesting you will have a hard time landing your shots on the target by asking: Are you Pirate Enough... an iteration of the tagline Be more Pirate we've had since launch. Then we're given a please subscribe mention.

They show it as something that might be fun to do, they cut it up and put music to it.

But they don't include one single inference of absolutely anything beyond what we have gotten. The video literally is just a quickly edited fast paced showcase of precisely the content offering. Or if we prefer alternative language, event offering, or even better still, the thing of the week we have to do this time offering.

There is nothing wrong with, deceptive about, or misleading in regard to this (So I guess it's lasting two weeks now) weekly event highlight video. It's a video that shows us what we're getting so we can be aware that we're getting it.

Should they instead put a guy with bi-focals and greased down hair and a pocket protector with chipmunk teeth behind a desk, give them a script and read in a monotone voice remarking: There will be thrones placed in the game, you can fire yourself from a cannon to reach them, you can then go buy three items of clothes and some coins or rep with the reward. Please have fun, the public service announcement is over.

Of course not. This video is simply them telling us what to expect. And cutting the video with quick edits and putting it to music. Sort of like a commercial, but with a purpose of letting us know what we will be getting.

Just because they present it with energy and silliness doesn't remark it as being unacceptable.

You say there shouldn't be marketing on this whatsoever. So... game companies shouldn't showcase and show off what they include in the game? How furious would players be if they had no idea what Sea of Thieves was all about? If they feel compelled to market the leafs on the palm trees they have every right, it's not subversive or wrong.

If they were suggesting there's more in the offering via this video or being too vague and creating false sensibilities, I'd understand.

HD was kind of like that. They left commentary for months somewhat vague. AI Threat was the worst of the verbiage that could be misconstrued. For the longest time players theorized mermaids, and more. Even after they announced Megan and we were certain of her arrival, there was room for interpretation and wonder if that was all they meant to offer.

The video you link... literally shows exactly what's in the game and says nothing more.

Asking a company not to advertise/announce the content, no matter how weak it may be, is just unrealistic.

There is some merit to your remark though bud. If the content was an unannounced surprise there'd be different backlash... people would be complaining because they were NOT informed of the event and potentially missed out.

People already whine in various outlets about how Rare doesn't share information in the way they prefer, usually my remarking it's there isn't enough said or that it isn't well shared HERE on this forum. Imagine if they stopped talking altogether as you suggest they'd be better off doing...

    That'd create incessant complaints.

I still hold to the merit of the argument that you might not like the event offered, that is wholly a matter of taste and scale of what you want delivered. I too would like to see more in depth offerings for the weeklies!

  • @ooo-madlax You are not the only one that plays this game. I hated Meg. Because of the fight. I hate boss fights. I love what they are doing this week.

  • 3 of my friends tried this game with Xbox pass and never wanted to return to it. I tried to defend this game at the beginning thinking there will be more promised content later...but when I see so called "content" I fully understand their decision and regret to not ask a full refund at the beginning.

I was just enchanted by great base of this game and future opportunities...so I was able to pardon some temporary absence of content.
But now I clearly see how much efforts Rare puts in it - ZERO! and apparently it never gonna change. They do everything but a pirate game - social hub, primitive mini-games nothing to do with main subject.

Sad, it was yet ruined again expectation from alpha state released game. Never again...

Few months since the release - a lot of empty promises and absolutely no new enemies and stuff, just reskins, reskins and copypasted shark...as a result of hard work. As a self-employee I know what it means to make a project for someone, and what Rare do is just an insult for clients, but not a hard work.
I participated also some modding for Arma, so I know what group of people capable to do if they want, modelling, scripting, texturing etc. you can learn it and use it from zero and create a really cool content with so much possibilities and better quality than developer's stuff, only if you have a good will, but apparently Rare don't have it, they do simplest 5min stuff just to show they working...

Place 10 chairs on the map - no scripts, no mission, no enemies....bravo! I'd wish you be served same way - flour and water instead of your bread - entertain yourself

  • I look forward to the future events which will include:
    *Stand on this rock
    *Point towards this cave
    And *Sleep at this outpost

    And *Sleep at this outpost

With a member of a rainbow community, to show your support to it, otherwise - no new useless dress skin for ya!

You talk about modding a game like it were an entire new game. the fact is, there is a difference between a stick to the windshield tom tom and a built in navigation system in a car. The tom tom might have some functions but it is not really a part of the car.

I'm talking not about simple texture changes or slight modding like this, I talk about full creation processes of characters/vehicles models, texturing with speculars and bump, scripting etc...believe me modding in arma is more complicated than you think...

And I now how long it takes to create some volume of content. Now about Rare, once their game engine is finished they do the same thing -modding their own game, just adding a content - same modelling, scripting etc....but create a chair and put it on the map without any scripting it does not take 2-3 weeks, you can trust me! (25min of work max for experienced 3d artist supposed to work for Rare, and about of 1 hour to find some spots and place them all? )

Same for Megalodon - they just upscaled existing model with slight mods - duplicated teeth and eyes and pasted it into the game, and this is not a hard work of 2 month, could you admit it ?

And one more thing, modeling in arma is way more complicated, in SoT you don't have complicated vehicle models, opening hatches, suspensions, working mirrors etc. same for bump mapping, specular maps, photo-realistic textures etc. SoT as simple as possible -low-poly models, color stains instead of textures(because of chosen genre)...so don't tell me about what and how I have to compare.

Simple example - I bought Deep Rock Galactic at 22 euros, it's 1/3 of what SoT costs and it has about the same modelling/texturing style. Ghost Ship Games is a small developer nothing to compare to Rare, but...every month there is at least one new update, with a new enemies, new objects, new level designs, new mechanics and other additions...
So it's possible for small company selling their game at 22 eur and impossible for Microsoft/Rare with 60 eur price ???

  • @gloog Its almost like people on this very forum voted for 'new areas' instead of 'wildlife and enrichment'.

Sometimes ppl cant see the reality and you just cant make them understand or see it. Maybe in time man they will notice that

  • I can agree, that the content so far has not been "WOW" but even if the thrones are basically a cosmetic element saying there was no programming is not acurate, they required you to sit on them (sure that is not much of a script) and sometimes needed at least 2 crews to sit at once. And calling the Megalodon a simple copy paste shark is just not true. You could also argue that human models in games all look alike and therefore should only take a few houres to create.
Also, the thrones was a 1 week project WHILE working on the main content they are gonna release next (the cursed sails). AND they make sure that upon release there are no bugs in the new content wheras even if you release a mod in 1 week it usually takes another 3 weeks at least till all the bugs are fixed.

I don't know how enrichment doesn't fall within exploration but okay 😉 those aren't mutually exclusive designs

  • @ooo-madlax

Well, it IS objects and mechanics that weren't there before, so they probably get off on a technicality.

  • I've said from the beginning, it seems like they are releasing content that they considered for launch, but ultimately scrapped. Then when people started talking about lack of content, they went back and started developing these ideas into DLC releases.

Together, these ideas are awesome. Imagine launch day, sailing around fighting other ships, fighting the kraken, exploring and finding these odd chairs. People start figuring out you need to sit in them...
Then after a few weeks, people start figuring out these riddles with Merrick, working together to solve them/fight Meg. All these little things making the experience unique. Instead, they're releasing them in bits, telling us how to complete it, then after the first day everyone's twiddling their thumbs again.
