Request: Instanced Adventure

  • I would like to put in an official request for Rare to add instanced adventures to Sea of Thieves.

Imagine if you are sailing on the sea with a crew that you feel confident the crew is good, and you all decide to head on down to Dagger Tooth Outpost to pick up a Quest from a Pirate who has appeared on the island who has parchments pinned up to the side of the clothing shop and is constantly trying to decipher the riddles that all point to 3 different entry points to an instanced adventure.

You and your crew approach the crazed Pirate and he explains to you that he has all of these 'riddles' and he will let you in on what he knows about treasures buried deep in a cave that is believed to go deeper than the ocean bed itself for 100,000 coins. All the players in your crew enter in the amount of coin they can spare (allowing diverse amounts to be given from each player) to get the riddles, and map and he gives you the map (offering 3 locations on the map) where you can enter the instance where the riddles will become clear.

You and your crew gather up resources, and head towards one of the locations. Upon entering the location with the 'quest' in hand you and your crew are loaded off the map and into your own player instance.

As you login your ship sails into a cave, and in the cave are sparkling fish that you've never seen in the game before. There is something unique about this cave. You all choose the items you will take off the ship and head on into the cave where the ladder leads downward.

In the instance you fight several bosses each reaping its own rewards, and find several resources that are not 'typical' in the regular game that can be used to solve riddles and find secret passage ways. Several ways of using the environment to kill swarms of pirates, or skeletons (AI) are found in the caves, and you can get lost in this cave as its map does randomly generate to some degree.

This cave (instanced adventure) could take you 2 hours to complete. After defeating the main boss (3rd boss) an over arching story is revealed about Sea of Thieves, and other instanced adventures will come in developer seasonal updates.

You and your crew gain a 'randomized' horizontal progression item, but perhaps the randomized item is not what you seeked - now it's time to do it again with your crew until you are satisfied.

Lets say you and your crew all need a special coat, boot and glove set that will allow you to enter the far North side of the map where the waters become too cold to fall into, and ship battles here are far different than the ones on the main seas, and if you don't have the set you constantly take damage. Our instanced adventure lead to an open doorway into another part of the map that expands our adventure and way of playing.

Sea of Thieves needs Instanced Adventures like this, and more!

  • To me this sounds pretty much like the general concept of instances from other MMOs.

I would vote against this, because I think this does not fit well with what Sea Of Thieves actually is and I would much rather have Rare continue working on basic game mechanics and expanding the shared world with more public events, etc.

Why would you vote against this? It fits perfectly into what Rare has created, it does not interfere with PvP or PvE content, as a matter of fact it expands the PvE content (being a PvP player here) I think this would be an incredible next step for the game.

We need something with more 'depth' to it than just sailing to islands and digging up treasures, and fighting skeletons for skulls. Think bigger.

  • I like it in general. Sprinkle these things around to introduce more backstory to the world. This might already be what RARE plans, to some degree.

Although I think they'll keep everything on the same map as opposed to whisking you off to a closed adventure zone.

  • @JJblackhat
Yes and I completely agree that we need more debth and diversity to the game. But I personally think that the magic of this game lies in the shared world and the fact that players from different crews interact with each other. Sometimes in pleasent ways and sometimes less so.

I would rather have them expand on this concept and give us more opportunities to interact with other players and ships in meaningful ways.

Why I don’t believe instances fit well into this context is because they are scripted, linear content, which is not the mission of this game, at least as I understand it. Rare stated that they intend to give players tools to write their own stories, rather than predefined stories on rails.

Considering the effort to create the mechanics for those instances and keep on creating new adventures in the future, I’d prefer to see more shared world content and events, where the interaction and interference of other players creates diversity in itself.

Well I don't see how they could possibly do that for an instanced adventure. But imagine sailing to the far north of the map after doing an instanced adventure where you needed to get a set of 'warm' clothing to wear to be able to enter.. instead of the sea's turning red, they turn ice cold. This is a place where PvP content is much more ship based, than underwater boom barrels, etc.

If they were to try to have this in a real world scenario it could not be setup to play out in a story like way, it would get ruined by campers, etc. This would be a true PvE section of the game that does not interfere with PvP and I am all for PvP, and love love love it. But this is taking the PvE content a step further too so the game caters to more than one player base but still makes sense and creates need for both PvE and PvP.

Their whole shared world adventure. Ya know.....the one they've been talking about since the beginning? The same reason they said they wouldn't have NPC ships.

I don't think it fits at all. Streamlined themepark experiences are kind of the opposite of a dynamic sandbox shared world experience. It also detracts from player made stories and adventures when you create artificial experiences and stories to follow. The fact everything takes place in a big open world and isn't some pre-set path of content you follow is the major charm to this game, a style that is nearly dead in this day and age of epic stories and pre-defined experiences.

It needs both, not one or the other but both. It already has the dynamic sandbox foundation, now it needs branches off of it so we are not creating consistent repetition.

  • @jjblackhat

What? It stops being one the moment you create a separate instance. The only thing not holding seems to be your reading comprehension.

While i understand where you're at, that doesn't seem to be the game that Rare has built. This is a game with multiple players but no means to meaningfully interact outside of killing each other. Teaming is at best random but there doesn't seem to be an easy for two crews to merge or for a solo to join a galleon. It's not a game built around building a group for instanced content. It's a game about taking everything not nailed down.

I respect the desire to see them work towards a more MMO like experience but that will have to be a different game about 8 years from now when most of the mistakes of SoT are forgotten or fixed.

Everything instanced takes away from the world, specially if they gave you rep for the factions, these instanced things would be only thing everybody would do, without risk. It's not a MMO it's SHARED WORLD action-adventure. Not instanced action-adventure.

The moment you can do something that gives you money or rep safely, that's what people will do.

I hope they keep everything open to everybody at all times and never do anything like this as instanced.

  • @JJblackhat I would love adventures, dungeons like you described. I've no ideas if it should be instanced but it could work like the Legendary Hideout or the Ferry of the Damned. It wouldn't be something new or against the "philosophy" of SoT if the Adventure works the same way.

  • Instances are wrong for Sea of Thieves. MMO devices like safe zones, social zones, and instances are a step backwards into immersion breaking territory. Games like Sea of Thieves eschew MMO design flaws for more elegant solutions that do not pull players out of the world and into pocket demensions.

  • God god, god no.

One of the few things this thing has going for it now is all open world , they in fact need to make it where's there's more players/ships around than currently in the "worlds".

Backed Camelot Unchained heavily because I (and others ) want a return to an actual mmo world without instancing.

Everquest , DAOC , UO etc all felt far more like mmo worlds to me due to no instancing (originally till many years later for a couple of them).

    alt text

  • Actually, an instanced area is not fitting the open & shared principles of the game. Look at the skeleton forts and you'll understand where Rare want to go. I've made a suggestion for open world dungeons based on a similar idea, however it's designed to be non-exclusive and in-map. The sole purpose of looting is the risk of loss, so you need to have a permanent risk of being attacked - or cooperate, with the paranoia it implies.

The devs said they don;t want to split the player bases. I'd rather be able to encounter the people doing this quest to kill them and take the reward. yarr.

developers say a lot of things before a game is released, but they quickly change tune when the bottom line is at stake. yarr.

putting a dress on a pig doesn't fix the issue

  • hey, Here is a better idea about instanced adventure...

They are not you alone so you are safe. They are groups of boats either against or working together.

Imagine for a moment that Sanctuary outpost is under attack, and it is for the greater good that 10 captains and their crews team up to stop the Skellies from sailing in.

Or you need to protect a merchant ship from other players momentarily

Or... You want to fight your friends.

    All summed up here

I would like to put in an official request for Rare to add instanced adventures to Sea of Thieves.

You'd be able to, they don't just get the reward and it's theirs, they would have to deliver the goods first. It doesn't take away from PvP at all, it just adds another element to PvE so it's less BORING.

Instances are wrong for Sea of Thieves. MMO devices like safe zones, social zones, and instances are a step backwards into immersion breaking territory. Games like Sea of Thieves eschew MMO design flaws for more elegant solutions that do not pull players out of the world and into pocket demensions.

This isn't a 'safe' zone, it's just an instanced adventure to add more substance to the game, but you also have to get the goods back to the PC who sold you it, it's just one more element to add to the game. If you can figure out a way to make it non instanced, and still be more unique to the same grind that SoT today I would love to hear about it.

From a development perspective it's impossible to do without it feeling cheap. Crumble a mountain as you are running from it? So it crumbles, and nobody else can use it until it 'spawns' again, mountains just spawning around the map? Some of the ideas are cool, but I don't see any of it working without creating an instance so it does not effect the other players in the game. There is a reason 'instances' are used in MMO's.

  • Just take away the idea of being instanced and it's a fine idea. SoT is not an MMO.

  • @jjblackhat A few things need to be thinked deeper, like the fact of having few dugeons on the map so there's always at least one active, but I think the underground is infinite and can easily hide procedurally-generated cave systems to ensure both open world presence and non-repetitive adventures. Games nowadays can do some awesome things, especially sandboxes.

I think you bought the wrong game then. Maybe something on rails like gears of war or uncharted or assassins creed is more your style. When I buy sandbox it's to do my own thing. It's the same when I play Bethusda games I don't do the story I explore. Sandbox RPGS are about YOU as the character and how YOU choose to live your virtual life, Not about holding your hand with quests and pop up tips.
