Respawn Ideas

  • I think (or hope) that most people agree the respawn mechanics need reworked. I'm not going to go into why, but here are some idea's I've had. I haven't thought through each idea completely, but that's why I'm posting these. I want to get everyone else's opinions and ideas. I think together we can figure something out that actually works. Please let me know what you think:

    • Upon respawning, players find themselves in the opposing team's brig. A teammate will be required to release them (5-10 seconds to pick the lock to release teammates). Players in the brig will have the option to respawn at the closest respawn island.

    • Upon respawning, players find themselves on the closest island. This will give players more time to sink ships and pvp without the endless bombardment of respawns. Once a ship is sunk, players automatically spawn at the closest respawn island.

    • Increase respawn time to a minute (or other appropriate time).

Those are the ideas I've had so far. Please let me know what you think.

  • I would favor something a little less complicated since we're close to launch, but agree that respawn needs work for anti-trolling.
Respawning to your existing ship, if you're killed and your ship is afloat, should be optional. Another option in the Ferry of the Damned should be to scuttle your existing ship and respawn safely to avoid spawn camping problems. Although the option should remain to respawn to your current ship and continue the fight to retake it if you're boarded.
I don't think that option should be removed despite complaints from attackers that there's too much respawning. They have the option to disengage or loot quicker before their target can respawn. The target, currently, doesn't have an option to disengage and is forced to respawn over and over into a possibly losing battle.

  • Change ships to have a crew size, like gallion have a crew size of lets say 12. With this assuming 4 players on the boat you have 8 respawns before you cant respawn on the boat again. To refill your crewsize you go talk to the lady at an outposts tavern asuming your ship is in the outposts area, also a ship will be considered lost if its crew size reaches 0 at wich point the tavern lady spawns a new ship for you instaid of refilling the crew size.

Also a sunk ship should turn into a shipwreck that lasts 5 minutes or something and the mermaid shoul only function as a teleport to the nearest outpost for players stranded without a ship.

  • bump to see other people's ideas.

There is a thread on this already from reddit that was posted here as well take a look: An easy fix to the current bad pvp dilemma

  • @bandersnatch12 I think a "Crew-Wipe" Mechanic (taking inspiration from the Battlefield Saga) should be implemented into the game. Once a ship is successfully boarded and all (and I mean ALL) of its members have been killed, that crew should be considered "wiped out" and they should respawn on an outpost somewhere as they have legitimately lost their ship and any rights to its treasure haul. They shouldn't be able to infinitely spawn on their ship in order to try to eliminate the enemies or regain any captured chests; this makes things too chaotic. Instead, this system woud be in place to emphasize teamwork as shipmates must communicate and organize themselves to have at least one member of their crew stay alive in order for them to be able to spawn on said "alive crewmember". I believe this would put a stop to some of the frustrating "loop" situations you find yourself in regarding the spawns.

  • I agree that respawning is an issue. The white light inbetween leaving the ship of the damned and respawning is not good. It leaves time for others to spawn kill you.

The Xbox gamer tag is probably my biggest complaint upon respawning. I think that the gamer tag should remain invisible for a certain amount of time to prevent other pirates from seeking a reapawned player as quickly.

I like the idea shared earlier in the post about limited respawning lives before the ship is lost.

  • The respawn time only becomes a problem when ships get in boarding range.

There have been a few suggestion threads on reddit about ships having a vulnerable flag/bell that can be raised/rung to alter spawn conditions. I think something like this is an absolute must.

What happens to the spawn conditions is the interesting part.

Raising the respawn timer to a minute or so until the flag/bell is used by a shipmate seems like a good general solution, but not really an interesting one.

I'd love the brig used more, and PvP is the perfect place. Unfortunately the potential for griefing grows pretty significantly with its use. A solution could be:

When your flag/bell is toggled by an enemy, your team respawns in your brig. They can be released by shipmates or when your flag/bell is toggled back. To prevent players from being held in brigs for long periods, perhaps have the ship slowly take damage while in this state, so that the ship will eventually go down with all 4 members brigged.

I liked your idea of respawning on nearby islands too. This would give players something to do (fight off skeletons/sharks) to get to a siren and back to the ship while still drawing out the effective respawn time.

  • @bandersnatch12
When rescuing teammates there could be additional game mechanic put into use like:

    • grapling hooks that enemy crew can detach while you are climbing, resulting you ending up in the water
    • stealth walking/swimming(less noise, no nameplate above your head)
    • walking barefoot make less noise
    • bullets or fish bladder filled with water - to put out the lanterns on the ship
    • stun if attacker is in stealth mode or is making sneak attack from behind
    • throw/kick sand in the eyes to blind enemy for few seconds
    • tie up stunned enemy
  • The respawn is definitely hosed compared to the previous alpha/ first beta build. It used to spawn your ship a good ways away. But I feel this has not only changed in the current beta code but is more apparent with the addition of the spyglass and eye of reach.

  • I think the simplest thing would be a longer respawn timer when you are killed more than once. I can imagine a ghostly hourglass by the door that lets you know how long you have.
Along with this the option to scuttle the ship and start over somewhere else instead of respawning.
I am guessing that everything in this Beta is shortened including respawn timers. Guessing the cap is going to be over 25 with the merchants or the progress will be slowed down A LOT in release, otherwise people will be capped out in all 3 merchants in a week.
