Passive Mode

    WHERE IS THE PASSIVE MODE?

Do you understand that people’s first experiences with this game are NEGATIVE and not enjoyable. How can you expect to bring new users in when one simple aspect of the game turns it into a negative experience?

AT LEAST implement some kind of MMR system so we only come across noobs like us.

The spawn kill mechanic is just infuriating. The only reason these toxic players are doing this is because they are feeding off how annoying and frustrating it is to be spawn killed over and over again.

The combat mechanics just aren’t good enough or relatable enough to other PVPs which amplifies how awful it is to play this game.

Needless to say, we play games to enjoy them. A game that creates experiences like this has no place in my recreational time. I’m sure other ex-players feel the same.

If that does not interest you, then you should be aware that this game is as much PVP as it is PVE, you can play how you want just keep in mind this fact. It's what makes it great. If it was only one or the other, the game wouldn't even be fun after 100 hours and that's pushing it imo. Now prepare for the anchor :D

  • [Mod Edit]

I appreciate the PVP aspect, it is fun and I can imagine enjoying it but I need it to be opt-in.

Sometimes, I just want to chill with the homies and sail the seas. Definitely not rarely in the mood for a hyper competitive and infuriating environment.

The world is so interesting to explore, I feel like this is such a let down.

If the game needs PVP to be enjoyable after 100 hours, that means your basically taking the new players and feeding them to the veteran players for their enjoyment. It’s a question approach imo.

  • @nazaire If I could offer another advice. Play with your mates, don't dwell on losses and sinking. We all sunk countless of times. Just remember that once you get good with your crew, you will enjoy the game in its full glory. The PVP encounters won't be scary anymore and they will always be exciting. I understand it is hard to develop this mindset when you are millions and hundreds of commendations behind your goals, but if you follow this path, you won't regret it later.

Without danger on the horizon you would explore all there is to do in a week probably, then realize its very repetitive and there is not much left. But parking your ship on let's say Discovery Ridge and going for that voyage or tall tale, knowing someone might attack keeps the excitement up and if you are successful at the end of your session it only feels that much more rewarding. You might make a million on an alliance server it won't feel nearly as good as making 250k in a normal adventure.

I've been there myself, I spent all my gold several times and wanted to get some quick coin, so from the few sessions I played there.... man you can fall asleep from boredom, a lot of people afk half the time and are terrible at the game in general. But hey you make a lot of gold at least. Just bear in mind that if you wanna get all your mates into same session, you will struggle finding a well organized server that could accomodate your needs, or at least I know nothing about it.

Unfortunate you came across hostile players. Since this is a PvPvE game, players are free to do whatever is in their (and your) ability for interaction. It's just by chance the interaction was an intense battle on the waves with a clear solid victor. Some players are peaceful, but remain cautious on approach in order to not be ambushed easily.

    WHERE IS THE PASSIVE MODE?

Do you understand that people’s first experiences with this game are NEGATIVE and not enjoyable. How can you expect to bring new users in when one simple aspect of the game turns it into a negative experience?

First experiences heavily vary for players. Sometimes you get ravaged before leaving the outpost (because you took too long at the outpost), sometimes (in a crew you joined) you managed to steal a skeleton fort's worth of loot and upset another crew that did all the work for you. Anything can happen on the Sea of Thieves, so it's very difficult to pinpoint that first experiences are negative with the game entirely. Without a trusty, experienced crewmate by your side, you may experience getting defeated by other crews very often. That's just the nature of this PvPvE world, and tends to apply to other games that are also PvPvE (albeit without the hilarious number's game advantage for most encounters).

AT LEAST implement some kind of MMR system so we only come across noobs like us.

It's rumored (with anecdotal evidence by not-well-trusted players) that such MMR exists for fresh new accounts getting into the game the first time.

The spawn kill mechanic is just infuriating. The only reason these toxic players are doing this is because they are feeding off how annoying and frustrating it is to be spawn killed over and over again.

Spawn killing isn't a mechanic, it's a consequence of the game's spawning system. Considering you're complaining about this in the first place, tells me you've been sailing on a sloop. Sloops are notoriously the easiest ships to lock down with a crew of 2 or more. While Season 7 provided a couple of updates to the Sloop's operations and defenses for combat, this does not really fix the issue entirely. You will have to be on your guard much more when you spawn on your ship during a spawncamp.

The combat mechanics just aren’t good enough or relatable enough to other PVPs which amplifies how awful it is to play this game.

Other PvP games arguably suffer from the same exact issue, however, they also feature controversial MMR systems, custom modes, additional maps, etc.

Sea of Thieves is a singular, consistent world all around where everyone is on equal footing ability-wise. The only inequalities, are the ships' offenses, defenses, speeds, and the sheer number of people attacking a singular target at once. This is just a consequence of lacking a larger crew for certain situations.

Needless to say, we play games to enjoy them. A game that creates experiences like this has no place in my recreational time. I’m sure other ex-players feel the same.

We still have a very fine amount of players that enjoy and endure the game without needing a passive mode, visiting Alliance Servers and other things that are likely not the intended experiences of Sea of Thieves. What you make of your adventures is best based on your mood and going in with little expectation of success.

A clear mind can take you a long away as long as you are finding enjoyment in the seas (hopefully with friends).

EDIT: Also this thread is likely getting locked as this subject matter has already been covered by the developers, and moderators on this forum will lock any threads requesting this as there is no longer room for the discussion of "Passive Modes" or "Private Servers".

  • I appreciate all of these responses, and it helps to understand the game more and why people are playing it.

But i’m just one player, and while I might read this and give the game another shot.
How many hundreds of players didn’t give it another chance…

Yeah I noticed that the forum is quite intolerant of this topic, but i’ll share my feedback nonetheless because I believe it’s a problem, i’m clearly not the only one, and we’re simply just asking for an alternative game mode 🤣 - because it’s actually a fun game!!

  • Ahoy!

Just a reminder that Alliance servers are not endorsed or condoned in any way, shape or form by Rare. They go against the game design and intent and are not how the game is intended to be played.

The reason the Forums do not allow this topic is because we, as the development team, have explained our thought process on this many, many times.

SoT is a shared world adventure game, built on risk vs reward. Without the risk the reward is meaningless and the game becomes 'gold grind simulator' which is not the game we made.

There are many ways you can adapt to the threats on the seas including finding a crew in the LFC channels on our Discord (which also include a swabbie section where seasoned players will show you the ropes), you can also learn how to keep your wits about you and constantly keep an eye on the horizon. Learn which ship is best in which situation (a sloop will always be fastest with straight sails sailing against the wind). Make sure you stop by going sails up, anchor up - it's faster to getaway this way than dropping your anchor and having to raise it.

As for why the game is designed in this way and why we have no plans to introduce a PvE version, please check out the following sources:

    Dropping anchor here.
