Sadly, Rare has learned nothing from the Bungie/Activision Destiny debacle

  • Is there a team of 3 working at rare putting this game together? It's got less content than most Indy games at double the price. I don't understand how a company the size of Rare spends 3 weeks to release the closed crews option - which is literally just a few easy lines of code to change and test, that should have been a no brainer to include in the alpha, much less a final product. Sometimes it sucks being a guy who actually works in the game development field because i know firsthand how easy it is to make these changes. Rare is clearly not a company made up of gamers. People making the big decisions at this company have gray hair. This is another bungie-style situation developing here and it's sad this is what gaming g is coming to. I'm letting my game pass expire, I just used it to try the game and the trial is over. Shame, it was a brilliant idea Rare had here and now its evident it will never come to fruition at the sluggish rate they are going. It's too little too late now. And all the microtransactions in the world will not right this sinking ship. I hope another more gamer-oriented publisher picks this idea up and actually delivers. I'll keep my eye on the development of this game and document it's sad demise.

  • HAH Got em

  • @broham-berger You saying gamers can't have grey hair, m8?

  • Oh no, a game pass player saying goodbye. Well my weekend is ruined already :(

  • @ishameltheschiz my hair has gray in it now, I'm 43. Just making a point.

  • Get off the bandwagon already.
Rare is in this for the long term. Happens to be a dream game for them. Later days, mate.

Thanks for posting, have a grog.

  • I LOVE the daily, repetitive posts of “No Content” and “This game is dying/dead”.

The people that post these things really have NO CLUE how to play A SANDBOX GAME.

Content: 3 types of Voyages (Merchant, Order and Gold). Can they get repetitive? Sure. But the same people complaining about “repetition” are the same people that log in Warcraft and do dailies, Mythic Dungeons, Raids and other stuff. What are all of those? The exact same content done repeatedly on a daily basis.

Game is Dying: the game is barely out and already has 1st content planned for May 29th. The remainder of the year (7 months) there should be 5 MORE CONTENT UPDATES. Each adding new features to the game. Most other games you’re lucky to get 2 updates and you want to complain about getting 6 in a year?

If there’s bugs in the game post em and let’s get them fixed.
If you have suggestions on ways to change some things post them. Rare has done an amazing job at listening to their players.

This constantly crying because you didn’t realize this game doesn’t give you content that gives you an advantage over others players so you can stream that advantage on Twitch to others is beyond stupid. Go play other games, this isn’t the game for you and we are better off in this game without you.

well i have almost 4000 hours in Arma 3 which is nothing but a sandbox (albeit a sandbox with proper customisation, mod support, and more than 3 things to do). And yeah i think SOT is sorely lacking even as a sandbox....

sounds like you should educate rare with your superior expertise....

  • If you got the game from the pass then stop crying over Rares mistakes. People need to understand this is the first game of it's kind and the first game like this Rare has developed. There are gonna be issues with live patch updates.
As for the lack of content, we all understand the fact it's not there. Rare will release more content within time. Patience for these things is a must. I honestly don't see how Rare made much money on this game due to the pass. Unless more people paid full price compared to the smarter choice of the 10$ a month which I'm sure they get a fraction of that sum. I know the sum will equal out to more than the 60$ thousands would have paid at the release but that'll take time to get to that amount.
Rare is doing just fine with development. They're on issues and listened to the community the best they can. There are thousands of us and only few of them. Not all issues can be addressed in the time the community wants them to be addressed. Climb to pirate legend and hope in a year Rare has SoT all figured out.
Also shout out to the Rare employees working hard at keeping the community alive. A lot of negative feedback lately but the true fans are gonna stick around for the long haul. Can't wait to see more added to this game but until then I am enjoying the experience and lack of content as it is. Keep up the hard work Rare!

It had more content when it was released in 2013. That's kinda the deal. You have the content in the game "before" you release it. This is not early access, this is Microsoft. The game was in development for years, and now people say "stop complaining, content is coming". Errrrm yeah ok.

Can you imagine?? Crooked masts already looks questionable from the map screen! It would phallic imagery galore!

Really? 3 lines of code? That easy to implement? It was so easy that the update crashed their servers, even after testing and they had to take another couple of days to sort it...
Coding is NEVER as simple as "changing 3 lines of code", especially in an agile development scenario where there will be lots of folk all providing blocks of code, not to mention the complexities of linking in dynamic, server based waves, seamless server migration of players and everything else going on with the weather etc...

Let's be honest here - no-one here knows what the code looks like, but I can GUARANTEE that it took more than 3 lines to implement a closed crew option!

  • Or, perhaps instead, you just stop playing and not announce your departure as nobody cares.

  • @broham-berger you know, that every content there will be is for free...you paid 50/60/70 Euro/Dollar and you don't have to pay more and the game is still getting bigger and bigger...
Destiny by the way: you paid 60 for the game, i guess 30-40 for the season pass, 40 for the year two expansion and i guess there was even more...yeah, that's the same

So lack of content yet people STILL log in everyday to work towards Legend. Post on Twitter with screenshots of their adventures and when they teach Legend. All the stuff they do day in and day out playing the game. Maybe you should go ask them where to find the content you can’t seem to find?

Also, after YEARS of playing Everquest, a real sandbox game that gave you NO DIRECTIONS and FORCED you to find ways to level and things to do, Sea of Thieves has so much content in it I’ve yet to find myself bored.

I think the only issue with this game (minus bugs) is the players

  • @broham-berger people who blame developers for their games lacking content, dont understand the gaming world as it sits currently. Its the publishers. Your microsofts, your activisions, etc. A publisher(especially microsoft) will go to a developer and just go 'you have until this day, or youre all fired.' So, for the sake of keeping their jobs, companies like rare will release incomplete games and gradually add things. Im glad you used Bungie as an example as an example, because microsoft literally ripped the rights to Halo out from under them. Which is why PS4 has been getting content early and exclusive content to the destiny games. Admittedly, Bungie refuses to listen to its community, but yeah. You get the point.

  • I won't dispute the lack of content, it is definitely lacking and criticism of that is definitely valid. But to say that this game and Rare are on the same level as Bungie and Activision is far from accurate. Destiny 2 was basically released as Destiny 0.9 with less content than the original and the promise of fixing the game through monetized expansions. SoT content comes in the form of FREE expansions and weekly events and additions. Micro transactions were delayed because Rare listened to the players and decided the game was not ready for it. The only time Bungie has fixed anything in Destiny was when they got caught doing something shady like capping xp gains to push micro transactions. Both games had rocky starts but I think with all that's coming up for SoT it has a hopeful future.

  • @broham-berger huh guess you weren’t lying about your age, we played together earlier this morning lol! First time I’ve seen a forum name that rang a bell.

  • @Broham-Berger While we understand your intention is to provide feedback and reasons for your departure, these threads generate unrest in the community and incite negative responses rather than constructive discussion. For that reason, your thread is being locked under the Forum Rules.

If you have constructive feedback you'd like to share with the development team and discuss with the community, we'd love to hear it in Feedback + Suggestions!
