Just seems to me RARE are becoming increasingly out of touch... Feedback.

  • Let me start by quoting something I said recently in another thread — a post that resonated with over 40 others:

"Seems like they are creating the game THEY want to make, not what the players want."

Now, I could go on endless tangents nitpicking past decisions, but let’s focus on what’s relevant — As in just this week alone, which drives home the overall message I'm making.

    A. The Season 17 trailer tease:

Let’s be honest: the community’s reaction to this trailer has been one of the most underwhelming I’ve seen in the game’s history. Sure, a few players seem excited, but the overall sentiment? Outright negative, And I do mean that, something which I have not seen before. and that needs fixing. Urgently.

The Smuggling theme feels off, who are we smuggling exactly? Other pirates? As if that is a new thing suddenly? The content appears to be recycled, merely re-skinned under a new label.
And yes, there’s a new explosive. Cool. But let’s not kid ourselves — it just looks like a mega keg with a fresh coat of paint. Is that really going to shift gameplay in any meaningful way in the sandbox? Unlikely. Players aren't going to magically start fighting each other when kegs are in play. The contrary. Look at the past 7 years for proof...

Also it doesn't look like to be a new faction. Not that it would personally change my current opinions...

So the question is: are RARE going to continue acting stubborn, or will they finally listen to the player base and reconsider their direction? What happened to everything Rare promised in "The Voyage of a Lifetime" documentary for the game's 5-year anniversary?

That video came across in hindsight as little more than a well-polished marketing tactic designed to keep players emotionally invested. It gave the impression that the studio was deeply in tune with its community, committed to evolving Sea of Thieves alongside player feedback, and genuinely listening to what people wanted from the game’s future.

But what we’ve seen since then feels like a complete 180. A scummy tactic (Sorry but it just does).

So many of the things that were implied, or even directly stated in that documentary haven’t materialized. Instead, we’ve watched as highly requested features continue to be ignored, while updates focus on content and systems that barely anyone in the community asked for.

    B. Today's Pirate Profiles Announcement.

    This one really raises eyebrows.

Why are preset cosmetics, a basic quality-of-life feature still not in the game after SEVEN years?
In a game where cosmetics are the entire progression system, it’s baffling. Dare I say: Insulting.

The ability to save cosmetic loadouts is not a niche request. It’s consistently one of the top asks across all community channels — Reddit, Discord, YouTube, Twitter, and these very forums. This should’ve launched at the very least alongside the Captaincy update 3 years ago starting this August...
Yet here we are. Scratching our heads on what they are doing over at Tywcross HQ.

Are you just not doing your jobs correctly? WHO ASKED For pirate profiles just to ease in creating alt accounts, yet alone making it a paid subscription? Pathetic, Link me to a thread in suggestions about this. Custom/Private servers should be paid, that I would agree with.
Are the CM that watch these threads just spewing nonsense to the Development team to put in the game pretending it's what players want? Sure feels like it?

Instead, we get Pirate Profiles — which, according to the devs, is aimed at easing the creation of alt accounts for roleplaying purposes as one mention in the video. Seriously?

    Who asked for this?

I’ve played this game religiously since launch and can count on one hand the number of genuine roleplay encounters I’ve had, if that. Remember when Sea Fortresses were touted as being rich in RP elements, like sitting in chairs and such? How often have we seen players actually use that? Exactly. Yet they seem so disillusioned to keep pushing the ''roleplaying'' narrative. It's sickening and out of touch.

Meanwhile, the competitive community — which was significantly larger than the RP crowd, got axed without hesitation, swept under the rug, and a massive gaslighting campaign that I don't even want to start on that topic. Once again, out of touch.

It feels like Rare is obsessed with pushing a roleplay narrative that simply doesn’t reflect how the majority of the player base actually plays the game.

And let’s be honest, roleplaying in Sea of Thieves is lackluster, which is odd considering how much they double down on it. With only four players per crew, and limited server interaction, the odds of organically encountering roleplayers who use voice chat, speak your language, and want to engage are minuscule, in my experience, less than 0.1%.

    Conclusion:

We keep hearing that “the devs are listening,” and that community managers pass along our feedback. So here it is, as clearly as I can put it:

If you’re actually reading this, and many of us are starting to doubt that you are: Do better in communication.

Stop sidelining the dedicated players in favor of niche ideas that serve a small minority, or worse, internal goals that don’t align with the community’s needs. (As what my quote really is about above).

We love this game. That’s why we care. But we need to feel like that love is reciprocated — not ignored. Give the players what they’ve been asking for. Stop creating the game in a vacuum. Whilst pretending that's what the players want. You can fool the masses, but the ones like me who engage with a variety of players in multiple sub-communities, we are dumbfounded by these upcoming content changes, and quite frankly have been for the past few years.

Goes to show you are not the only one to think all this.

Quickly peeked my head back into this game after the S17 reveal, and yeh disappointment doesn't even begin to explain the current state of the game for me.
Quit 2 years ago, picked it up back up once or twice the past month and I heavily question how it's worse off than it was 2 years ago. That's an achievement on it's own.

Regarding the 5 year anniversary doco. It was a very enjoyable watch and I honestly forgot half the things they ''promised'' for the games feature, might do a rewatch right now actually for old times sake.

Meanwhile, the competitive community — which was significantly larger than the RP crowd, got axed without hesitation, swept under the rug, and a massive gaslighting campaign that I don't even want to start on that topic. Once again, out of touch.

I can heavily attest to that one, as I was one of the players just before Arena's closure and played in that community onwards in the 1v1 format. I literally played that game for 2 years straight almost purely because of that community. Actually, screw the ''almost''. I only played SoT because of the online friends I made were from that. Fun times, present day they all quit. It's super sad. They killed a community, are well aware of it, yet do everything to hide that fact.

They really did us dirty, and felt like some of RARE's names still supported us to some degree but I'm beginning to think it was done on purpose to lessen the blow that nothing in reality was going to be done. Or dragging us carrot on a stick style with the promise of custom servers, which big surprise just like you said with the custom saved outfits, absolutely zilch.

Honestly if you are upset about the game, be like me, and don't even dare opening the game up, don't give them an inch of player count numbers to brag to daddy Microsoft for their Quarterly meeting. Anyways, I guess I'm off again to see where this game is at in another 2 years time...

  • I completely agree. I think there is a massive disconnect between Rare and the community. When I watched the video and heard the guy say "one of our most requested features" I had to rewatch the video twice to confirm I didn't miss the feature he was talking about.

This goes back (at least) to the Monkey Island Tall Tales for me. Every time I see anything having to do with that tall tale, I can't help but wonder what the state of the game would be if they would have put forth that much effort in to the actual game Sea of Thieves, and not some random offshoot with a contrived connection.

No doubt, the devs have done some great work, we all wouldn't be here if they hadn't. But the complete lack of focus is troubling, and it shows in the absolute disaster that each update has become.

    Who asked for this?

I've seen this come up several times and the answer is that players did. A lot of them. It came up in the forums several times.

I don't think it's worth the dev time, but if people are willing to pay for it then I guess I can enjoy their money maybe funding something that I will like.

  • @d3adst1ck What constitutes "a lot"? Is it more or less than the quantity of players that have been asking for favorite outfit presets, or bookmarks, or ways to sort thru the pages and pages and pages of cosmetics? Is it more or less than the quantity of players that have been asking for stable servers, stable update days, stable features, stable fundamental game play? How about this one: is it more or less than the quantity of players that asked for a Monkey Island Tall Tale to replace Arena?

I think the point is, it feels like Rare is out of touch with its player base. In addition, it feels like there is no focus to this game. When's the last time you went to the Coral Fortress? How about The Shores of Gold? How about the Devil's Roar for that matter? When's the last time you did the Monkey Island Tall Tale? Was it when Rare created an artificial gameplay element by attaching new commendations to the journals that we had already been tasked with reading months earlier?

I love this game, as many others do. There isn't another gaming experience like it. However, every update, without exception, is filled with bugs. Some bugs are hilarious, some bugs are game breaking, but the bugs are always present. I've seen this team do amazing work, we all know what they are capable of. That's what makes it so frustrating. So, when Rare gives us the gaslight treatment while introducing a new feature, we take it personally.

  • Then play the game when season 17 comes out. There will be more content then shown in the trailer, it's a huge chance there's more to season 17.

  • WHO ASKED For pirate profiles

Apparently from the words of Rare. We did, for many years….
I don’t recall seeing people ask for that.
If I want to roleplay (as I do) I change my outfit to match the tone. My character is built that way

Don’t need another profile for roleplaying.
Sure maybe I might wanna task myself in seeing if I can unlock PL again but….from what I’ve read
Any Gold purchases don’t cross between the profiles and if you unlock one thing, you got to do it again with others.

Are there more people requesting loadouts than stable updates or server improvements? The loudest voice doesn't determine priority. Creating a second profile was probably a lot easier to implement than a lot of those things you listed because the majority of it exists, and you just add a way to switch between them. Storing loadouts doesn't exist, searching items doesn't exist, and stable features/servers/updates is never ending. That doesn't mean they don't have those things on their todo/wishlist.

How about this one: is it more or less than the quantity of players that asked for a Monkey Island Tall Tale to replace Arena?

Monkey Island was not a replacement for Arena and no one asked for it to be that lol. They made it because 'money'. Whether they made back their investment in the IP or not is anyone's guess though.

Did money influence the priority of being able to buy additional profiles? I think it probably pushed it up there along with ease of implementation.

  • The fact that Jack Sparrow and Guy are framing the announcement poster that reads, "MASSIVE UPDATE", plus the fact everything was kept secret, is the reason why a lot of people were expecting 1:- a massive update, and 2- a probable tall tale. Now that we see this isn't the case as per the trailer, what did them showing those characters have to do with season 17?

  • Not that I don’t agree with you, but it’s obvious Rare are making the game they want to make. The hottest topic feature, which has been asked for a long time now, is coming but Rare have decided to do it their own way. Do I agree with it 100? No. Does it affect me? No.

These recent seasonal updates have been bringing in multiple features players have asked for over time, but not every update is going to be specifically for you. Just bear that in mind.

  • Even as someone who plays this game as a roleplayer, I agree with you. The pirate profiles actually don't help anyways, since you don't carry over any cosmetics. I got a sweet moustache from the 7th anniversary event, but I won't be able to use it on my new pirate if I make one. Any limited time cosmetic (there are over 1000) can NOT be carried over. You will only be able to have cosmetics that are available from today on. As well, that pirate won't be PL, so the season pass unlocks won't include the PL unlocks, which if you miss them, they end up costing 600-2200 doubloons later on, and given how annoying doubloons are to get, and considering this pirate won't have any historical wealth to use for them, it just makes the game even grindier. Now if you miss a season pass cosmetic you might have to grind twice to get it on both characters if you want it.

As for the PVP crowd being thrown to the side, arena was shuddered before I came back to the game so I can't really talk about it, but hourglass is also getting put to the side. The chroniclers for each side only say the battle is even, no one is winning or losing. There not only is no stakes on the PVP lore wise, but it really doesn't feel like there is any reason to keep playing the PVP past getting the curse you want. The game mode doesn't feel like its respecting your time, so no one respects it back.

  • @d3adst1ck Searching items does exist within the game, the only place you can do it is the emporium. The only place they have that feature, which the fans have been asking for in the base game, is in the real money store. They do not need to invent a new system, the emporium literally already is that system.

Yep, and now they want to release a feature that is basically paying to make alt accounts, when you could always make them in 2 minutes, for free before that.
RARE are becoming super lame concerning this game. They just are.

  • I'm not sure about them being "out of touch", as a lot of them do play the game, so they should be well aware of what the game needs... but they are incredibly slow about adding QoL features that have been widely requested for years. Compared to even smaller (indie) studios, the progress feels glacial at times.

I don't know if that's down to red tape or too many cooks being unable to make decisions, but the end result is not good for perception.

You can't search the store, it has categories and you can change the ordering. Players will want to search and filter by color, type, set, item name, etc..

If I can add to this, earning achievements years ago, was MUCH easier than it is now. For example, there are posts begging Rare to increase the chances of getting a keg/cannonball/wood/fruit crate deliveries, since they're so hard to get and apparantly only come from bottle quests now. Years ago, I was incredibly lucky to find parchments in barrels at outposts requesting these deliveries, and even if I needed a particular item, I'd just purchase multiple merchant voyages until I finally got one that requested said delivery. I used to visit the same islands in a loop for a few hours killing island captains for generous gifts, and would get 2, 3, or 4 per night. It took me a few months to earn that achievement, yet players today can only get them by doing emergent forts or the BB (and it's spawn timer has been reduced, no idea if the gifts are still there as I haven't touched it in quite a while). Why would anyone pay money to buy a profile, just to have cosmetics taken away and achievements much more difficult to get? Who is the target audience here?

  • they are doing what they think will be fun for streamer content. but even their most loyal streamers who quit their real jobs to stream this game fulltime.... weird choice as the game was already in massive decline but yea... people like hitbotc who is increasingly more bored over time even though these updates are heavily focused on allowing people like him to create more memeable moments.

their focus seems to be on embracing the revolving door player base. streamers bring in new people all the time, launching on new platforms. trying to slow the player fall off by adding more content but overall porting to new platforms is just trying to stretch out the life span of the game a little bit longer. but we are very much in "managed decline" mode.

  • 'WHO ASKED For pirate profiles just to ease in creating alt accounts?'

Some streamers have started doing Hardcore mode in SoT.
Only purpose for the profile feature that I can think of is if a console player wanted to do something like that.
I presume it is easier to set up alt's on PC as you just need a different email address - whereas for console you also have a subscription to online gaming to pay for.
Would be a tiny percentage of the community.

A lot of players have asked for pirate profiles or something similar over the years. After the Captaincy update, I remember seeing more posts asking for things like secondary pirates or ways to play with a different look or style without giving up their main.

Just by searching the keyword "pirate-profile", I found these older examples:
    https://www.seaofthieves.com/community/forums/topic/139590/pirate-profiles
    https://www.seaofthieves.com/community/forums/topic/67420/secondary-pirate-slot

There are definitely more scattered posts out there, but they don’t always use that exact term. If someone took the time to scroll through every topic since the Captaincy update, they’d likely find several more asking for a system like what’s being added now.

It might not be everyone’s top request, but it’s still something that’s been asked for by a decent number of players — and it doesn’t take anything away from those who don’t want to use it.

Did you even read the two links you posted? The first is on a HUD for when you spyglass someone. We got that in the form of a ship profile when you spyglass that, but not the player, like the first thread was alluding to. It literally has NOTHING to do with what Rare is trying to sell us now, so that link is a nothing burger.

The second thread IS actually asking for a secondary pirate slot, but it had 1 upvote and that same person commented yes. So, two people wanted that. Is that considered a decent amount?? Thank goodness 7 years later Rare is fulfilling that request when we have immensely more pressing concerns.

This Pirate Profile addition is nothing more than another cash grab from Rare because the player numbers have been extremely low. We haven't even hit 10k average players on Steam since last July.

The first suggested the idea of Pirate Profiles — maybe not exactly like what's coming, but close in concept.
The second directly asked for a secondary pirate slot, which is basically what’s being added.

Not every request needs to blow up on the forums to count — especially when feedback also comes through Discord, SoT Partners, socials, and more. The forums aren’t the only place Rare listens.

Calling this a “cash grab” when it’s optional and most players are on Game Pass feels like a stretch.

But hey, the fact you're one of those people pointing at Steam stats to "prove" a point says enough. Not worth the back-and-forth.

It is a cash grab, especially when players can already make new accounts for literally FREE. XD
Getting upset that I am using data on the size of the player base pertaining to Steam is wild.

Had some free time While waiting on a long Unity compile, I took some time to search the forums. Here are some older posts where players asked for features very similar to Pirate Profiles. They don’t all use the exact same wording, but the core idea is clearly there:

Multiple character slots is straightforward, just allow players to have more than one character per Sea of Thieves account.

@vbassay said in Save current pirate and switch between others:

It would be so nice to save a certain pirate and be able to switch [...] I don't want to lose my main pirate because I’ve done literally EVERYTHING on it.

@countrazzore said in Option to have both a male and female pirate?:

I love my pirate [...] That’s why I'm asking if Rare would ever consider allowing us to have both a male and a female pirate selectable from the main menu.

@m4gic-wolf-321 said in Sea of thieves Character:

There should be another customization slot where you can have multiple characters [...] and switch back and forth between them when I want.

@IKiahFurniture said in Can we have multiple character save slots? And have the ability to customize our pirate.:

It would be nice if the player can make up to 3 different pirate characters.

@Cobra07102000 said in Character Change Option. Not Deleting your pirate!:

Just a way to change character without deleting the pirate.

    WHO ASKED For pirate profiles
Apparently from the words of Rare. We did, for many years….
I don’t recall seeing people ask for that.

    You sure about that, @burnbacon?
You actually replied to a thread asking for exactly that just a while ago:

@burnbacon said in Multiple character slots:

So pretty much remove Appearance potions?

  • I can only agree with what you say!
And the latest development update, which vindicates the cheaters by changing the FOV to 110 in the near future, is one of the worst decisions they've ever made... What message are they trying to send exactly?
In the space of a week, 3 announcements: all of them bad announcements (both in form and content).

  • I have over 10,000 hours of gameplay. With all the gaming sessions I've done, role-playing I can count on the fingers of one hand.
It really makes me wonder if these developers actually play the games they create? Or is it all the players who don't play the game the way it should be played?
As for the fact that developers listen to the community, I'm done believing it... I'm not naive.
The only community the developers listen to are the streamers, that's all.
If developers really listened to gamers and the vast majority of gamers:

    • There would be more tall tales
    • There would be predefined equipment/feature saves
    • There would be ships steered in Safers Seas.
    • There would be other biomes, creatures (and not just cosmetic ones like seagulls, lizards or jellyfish, which are almost invisible, let's be serious)
And I could go on and on...

They can only listen so much, can't keep everyone happy also.

Sometimes devs folding to feature requests can make the game worse also. I have seen that happen to a few early access games on steam, where a game starts going in the wrong direction or different direction to what the game was meant to be originally due to community pressure.

  • @zeyrniyx FOV changes have been something long-requested by the community, not just because of the cheater clowns. It's a win for everyone, and is a great accessibility change - especially for people with motion sickness.

Did you listen to the video?
The worry isn't that they're changing the FOV, it's why they're doing it.
It's very clearly stated: because it's the most modified thing in the game's code. So it's clear that, in the end, they're giving the cheaters their due!
After all, yes, it's been asked for a long time (it's also said in the video), but once again, you should have just said that they're changing it for that reason alone!
And here again, I understand why they're denying what they've created, because SoT's FOV was part of what made SoT, well SoT...

  • @zeyrniyx I think it's a two sided-coin; cheaters were going to do it regardless of what Rare does - they'll probably still use 120 anyway. They've changed their opinion/stance on things in the past too (safer seas), so the willingness to change is appreciated.

Once again, it's not the change itself that worries me, it's why it's being made.

And I'll make a note of this message when capitaincy becomes available in Safer Seas.... ;)

  • @zeyrniyx I just think it's a bit disingenuous to assume it's only because they're doing it to combat cheats, and not as a gesture of good faith for those asking.

Look, I may have my thoughts on Safer Seas/SoT in general, but ultimately I want this game to last for years to come and if that means opening up more avenues for people to play/enjoy, so be it.

I wish I could be as optimistic as you, I used to be, but I've learned from my mistakes... I no longer have confidence in the future of this game, so much so that they're doing everything to distort what made it so strong, at least that's my feeling.
And I think this week's announcements are the last straw. Between buying a pirate profile with real money so that you can start all over again under the guise of an RP (how many RP players do you really count?) and giving in to cheaters (under the guise in good faith of pleasing the community).
Really, since April 2020 I've been playing, I've seen the evolution of the game (which I gladly took on) but this is the first time I've been so disappointed (to put it mildly)...

  • @zeyrniyx I won't lie and say I'm not disappointed with the Showcase announcement, and again with the paid pirate profile news - I was definitely put off. I personally feel AT LEAST, the first one should be free.

As far as S17 goes, we will have to see. I try to look at things objectively, and fact of the matter is that good/bad/indifferent, we're getting a long-asked for accessibility change. Mike also saying that outfit presets are on the way is exciting to me, as well.

I also want to see this game keep going for years to come, and I really hope they take to heart how people are feeling. I've been sailing since the game's maiden voyage, and I've largely been pretty optimistic, but some of the aspects have been questionable, to be sure.

I'm not going to give up on the game I love, though. I've got too much time, and memories invested in it - I can't just walk away.

  • @valor-omega said in Just seems to me RARE are becoming increasingly out of touch... Feedback.:

I personally feel AT LEAST, the first one should be free.

Technically, the first pirate profile — your main pirate — is free. It’s only the extra slots that cost ancient coins, and even then, most players earn enough through the season pass or by killing ancient skeletons.

I’ve heard that some players reset their pirate after reaching level 100 on the season pass to keep the ancient coins and re-earn the rewards from scratch. I haven’t tested it myself, but since ancient coins are treated as “paid currency,” they’re the only thing that carries over — everything else gets wiped.

So yeah, there are definitely ways to get extra coins without spending real money, if you’re patient about it.

  • @uluckyhitreg I should have phrased it better; the first additional pirate deed should be free.
