Pirate Profiles

  • This could be a nice addition to the game. Pirate Profiles. When I was a kid I used to play a beloved game called Puzzle Pirates and this idea takes its inspiration from that game. Let me explain. This could be done via spyglass, for example: I am sailing, doing my voyage and I see a ship. I take out my spyglass and point it on the other vessel and the pirates aboard. Focusing on a pirate for 3 seconds causes a distinctive sound and on the screen appears: Press X to Examine. I press X and a window appears on screen featuring that Pirate's Profile. On the center, an oil like portrait of that pirate wearing their favorite outfit. Showing off their favorite weaponset and pet. Behind, a scenery of their choice. The pirate is posing in the portrait. Maybe its a friendly pose holding a rum... or maybe a menacing, holding a flintlock and a sword. Or maybe something entirely goofy, holding a pig, I dont know. Above is their name and chosen title. And under the portrait a few of their most notable deeds and commendations. This and more information could be displayed. The portrait could be done at a new building on outposts in exchange of gold. Sceneries and poses could be unlocked from achievements or bought from the store. What do you think?

  • From an immersion standpoint I don't love it. The unknown is a huge part of this game. We don't truly know about other pirates we can only speculate and use our experience to try to predict but we never really know.

From a social standpoint as long as it's voluntary and people can choose to not participate I think it's alright. Peacocking and socializing are also a big part of the game and if people want to participate in that sort of thing I think it's alright from that angle

Good idea overall and probably something I'd peacock with.

  • @wolfmanbush yeah I agree. Mostly suggesting it as part of the social aspect of the game.

I think it would be neat to just tie it to the already existing profile stats. We could have a pic of our pirate we wanted as you describe but what we would be doing is enabling public access to our personal stats available on the site. Kind of like using an emote to make a friend instead you would be using a spyglass to access the stats page of a pirate that has allowed access to their stats and with a picture of our choosing

  • I'm personally not a fan of using the spyglass as a Heads-Up Display.

    That aside though,

You say you want this to help the social aspect of the game, but I see this as a hinderance to it. Currently if you want to know about pirates from another crew, you have to interact with them. This completely nullifies that.

  • Apex legends character selection cards but SoT

  • I think this is a great idea. What is the point of being a pirate legend if nobody knows anything about you?

  • This game is built on soft skills like communication and empathy.

Although I like this idea for other games like MMO's, and I would certainly peacock here as well, I think it would take something away from chance encounters. Where your look and demeanor account for other players perception of you.

Why should another player care if you a pirate legend?

This is the other side of the coin.
No offence meant here, I just had a yin/yang moment.

  • What if you could visit a painter within the world who will paint your portrait? All you would have to do is spend a bit of gold, and pose with an emote (or sans emote) in a specific spot and he/she will paint you in that pose with whatever you're wearing or holding. Afterwards, any pirate who views you with their spyglass for 3 seconds or more will see a notification pop-up featuring a momentary framed portrait of your pirate with your name and title plaque at the base.

This could replace much of the floating text we see above pirates that aren't in our crew making the world more immersive and would incentivize recon, or spying in order to learn more.

It could be completely optional too. If you don't want to participate, you can either never pay the artist (in which case, nothing will pop-up when someone spies you), or pay said artist a "discretionary fee" if you ever change your mind about giving such info away. If nameplates are subbed, that will apply to the portrait too.

Perhaps even smaller versions of the portraits of your crew could be displayed upon the ship - perhaps in the Captain's cabin, or near the shelf, or the cage, etc. Anywhere that makes sense really. Or even somewhere in a tavern! Again, all of this could be completely optional - you don't have to hang it up in a public space like a tavern if you don't want to (and it would only be that particular tavern too - not all of them, though that might help facilitate social scenarios). It could be used as a way to show others who you are and of your presence if you so desire.

The devs even publicly acknowledged similar ideas that have hit the cutting room floor. Maybe this could be a roundabout way of reintroducing such things more appropriately?
