Why I quit SoT

  • Hey,
I played SoT for a few weeks. I recently ended up putting the game down until further notice, and here are my reasons, ordered from biggest reason first, to smallest reason at the bottom of the list:

    1. No sense of progression. Cosmetics are not enough for me. I don't feel like the treasure I sell has any real value. I really don't care frankly, and that's terrible. I've logged out of the game with a couple thousand doubloons' worth of chests still on my ship and felt no loss.
    2. No sailor's romance. Being pirates is all nice and stuff (although point 1 above invalidates that anyway, for me at least), but the real reason I even started playing this game was the idea of sailing a ship in a more immersive way than you do in most other sailing games where you are the ship itself, rather than the guy on it. But your temporary solution turned permanent, tacking doesn't exist, and you've refused to fix sailing for three years. That's me outta here. Who thinks it's a good idea to have flat sails into the wind be the correct way, instead of tacking?
    3. Bad hit reg. I love that you use actual projectiles instead of hitscan. Really. Make it work. Or at least make sure that I get my feedback from the server, not my client. This smacks of another of those temporary solutions turned permanent. Dirty, cheap, low quality, lazy, THREE YEARS. I do not trust that you will repair this, and thus I leave until further notice. No money from me.

  • @saynt-sorrows so...bye!

  • @saynt-sorrows I don´t get it. Do your research before you buy a game! Watch some reviews or some gameplay. Don’t complain if you could’ve known better.
    So bye i guess.

  • @yaboysuy0 Oh I did my research, and I did get a few weeks out of the game, which is enough to justify the buy price at 30% off. I don't regret buying the game and didn't say that anywhere either.
The game is however meant to be monetized through micro-transactions, and thus will only earn more money from me if I actually played it longer than I have - and this is where my feedback above comes in.

    @Schwammlgott stay safe. bye!

  • I can agree about there needs to be more progression but i'll just play once a week versus everyday since there isnt much for me to do other then PVP. the other 2 grips i dont really get as im not that hardcore about a pirate sim or hit detection, since the naval combat feels great and its my fav aspect about the game.

  • @elderterdkin Cheers. The naval combat is great, it's in my opinion the best part about this game. The sailing isn't though. The implementation of the sails is a disappointment to me.
The hit detection becomes a problem the moment the stakes of doing damage get high. Say, if you are getting boarded and already shot them four times with the flintlock and yet they still bunny hop their heads off.

    Hi there,

I get what you mean, but what about the progression of becoming a renowned pirate? Or do you mean what happens after that?

    1. I'm not sure I follow. Are you asking for romance options with your ship? Or do you mean that the game doesn't really encourage a sense of identity to your own ship? If it is the latter then I get that too. Things like naming the ship would help that. Currently when I get sunk (often) I feel no sense of loss to the ship - and that is perhaps am missed opportunity to create more immersion and a reason to care more about the ship, especially if there was an option for more cosmetic options for the ship in terms of below deck (layout, extra bed etc.) too.

As for tacking, are you saying you would prefer it that if we sailed into the wind, then we would stop in a more realistic way?

Can you give me an example as to a situation where there was bad hit reg? I am always sceptical when I read this sort of thing, in case it is the OP's way of blaming their bad combat ability on anything other than themselves. I haven't had any issues with that and the system seems fair to me in that regard, but willing to be proven wrong.

    Cheers :)

  • Valid reasons, and it's good that you don't feel the importance of having to turn in your loot. I do wish tacking was a thing.

  • @gunner-rat Cheers, sure, lemme clear that up.
    I'll start with number 1.

I think that a large part of what makes progression so enticing is that there are consequences for not achieving progression. There are not just rewards like unlocking new skills, new looks, new content, etc., but also the fact that you lose out on these if you don't progress. Opportunity cost.
SoT renown-tracks are worthless in that sense. Pirate Legend is the only meaningful opportunity cost for not progressing, and all you get for being a PL is more of the same (Athena) and a hidden room. Not. Worth. It's also not difficult enough to get to to be worth prestige.

    Number 2:
"Romance" as in fantasy. Sorry, I'm not a native English speaker, maybe this use of the word is more common in my own than in English? For me, "Sailor's romance" basically describes the fantasy of sailing a ship, playing around the wind, etc. For this fantasy to remain unbroken, there are some basic rules that can't be broken:

    • Wind has to change and I have to adapt.
    • Not adapting reduces performance.
    • My expectations of how my adapting will increase performance has to be fulfilled.
That last one basically means that if I'm tacking, I will get to my ultimate waypoint upwind faster than if I just sail dead into the wind. The fact that this is untrue breaks immersion and destroys the fantasy.
Note that I do NOT need "real sim". Arcadiness is fine. I'm okay with not being pushed backward by the wind just because I'm in irons. It's cool if that happens, but I can suspend disbelief that much in the interest of solo-slooping. But to invalidate tacking in a sailing game? That is just a bit too much.

    Number 3:
Hit reg happens when you get the hit marker on your screen, but no damage is applied. That's the case when your client thinks you hit, but the server disagrees. In pretty much all other FPS games I've played, feedback is handled by a response from the server. It tells your client that you have hit, and thus your game shoes you the hit marker. In SoT, that is not the case. In PvE it doesn't matter much, but as soon as there are stakes attached to your killing your opponent, such as when somebody boards your ship, it becomes real important real fast.

I think I should want to turn in my loot? Otherwise, I have little reason to go out and look for any. XD

  • @saynt-sorrows I can agree with all those pionts and would be great if they were fixed, not gonna keep me from leaving as the other sailing games out there currently are trash.

Sorry that your leaving, you seem nice and good luck to you otherwise, if you come back and meet me in game, im a troll and will sink you on site, otherwise im nice if you get to know me some other place : )

  • I really hope they eventually add some sort of hideout type options.
I don’t get the technicals of it all, but I think it would be a great way to have some progression and gold sinks without effecting there no vertical progression mantra.

Let me decorate a cave darn it! 😂

Your eyes have finally opened, I got kicked out of parties as ''I dint had a specific achievement'' which doesn't make any sense as the voyage they wanna do is kill some skeletons which I already did 3 years ago.
The game could've have much more potential but their not adding it in.

    Try a different perspective;
-There is no progression at all; loot isn't worth anything. Since whenever you started your account. (Just get a skinny black character and walk in your underwear for the best PvP skin, lol). Because of this fact, the game is made to PvP. (with a bad hit reg lol)
-Food and cannonballs are worth more then anything.
-Been sunk doesn't mean anything. (Except for losing the supplies in your ship)
-People with shiny cosmetics are easy targets, you can see them easily. So in PvP perspective there is no point in obtaining them. (its a grind anyway)
-You play the game to have fun, I can experience fun by annoying other players by; visiting them doing Fort of The Damned, circle around the island shoot some cannons on them. (works well on sloop solo)
Or; Surprise them while their doing a riddle. Get all their supplies and leave their ship behind on fire with 7 holes in it with no planks in their storage. Or; spawn camp them make them leave the server. Call them bad and you're better then them.
Or be creative and do something funny to tease other players, it is a sandbox game afterall.

Since there is no benefit you can gain in PvP this game turns into a toxic society of ''I am better then you, let me laugh at you'' situations. And people start to annoy other players like I described above. Which in my opinion can be fun, but most people cant enjoy it, as you ''ruined their hours of work''. Although as described before, you lose nothing if you sink, you gain nothing if you sell the loot. so in the end it doesn't matter as long you had fun.

I blame the developers as they created this situation of the game. For me and thousand of other players; this game is made to PvP.
They could've added a lot more voyages in the game giving you more to do, but for them to take 3 years to create a new Merchant Alliance voyage, which bugs and glitch out a lot, tells enough about their capabilities. I know this sounds salty, but that's just how it is.

I hope I changed your point of view of the game, and you can have fun out of the game like I do. Ruining other people's day is just really satisfying.

  • @xassflamex agree, the tribute for glitterbeard is a joke lol 8 people

  • @xpiquantx
I participated in that, and placed a gunpowder barrel next to the tree killing everyone. They all got pretty mad, but I found it funny :)

  • first off imma break this down, first we got no progression well some games just have no progression they are pure player experience games for instance welyn is a story telling youtube and he does stories on sea of thieves which is interesting and sea of thieves is meant to be an adventure that each player can have, not a progress fest as they said that pirate legend is the big goal of the game. sailing is meant to be movement anything to interrupt it will be annoying to people who dont care about it which is a good bit (me included) also if you want a good pirate game do good research for instance before i played sot i watched many videos and read some reviews as reviews can be faked and or paid to be lied about. Finally the biggest argument any player uses The hit reg well maybe if you kind of guys thouhgt its not bad it is a clean cut hitreg which means its hit reg is drawn to the shape of the character which most new games do but make it not as perfect this is sign of them spending time on their game, so i see why they dont want to change it as it would take more time then you just learning how to play with it. and before i forget why post this here and you reply to a lot of the replies so it makes me think you still play the game and you just want to complain about the same story that 100s of players complain aboutanything i post is not meant to take personally

  • @snowtheheat I suggest you format that a little. I don't see why I should expend the effort to read that wall of text if you can't expend the effort of making it readable.
I jumped down to near the end of it, where "you bet I still play the game because I answer every comment." That is faulty reasoning. Some people eat because they're hungry, some people eat because they feel they have to, whether they are hungry or not.
I posted this because I see the potential SoT has and because I hope against hope that somehow Rare does too, and might eventually do something about it. I answer the comments, because people expended the effort to send me these messages, and thus I dignify them with the same effort, or better. Imagine that. I actually care.

No, I do not play SoT anymore. I have 0.1 hrs spent playing SoT over the last two weeks, according to Steam. I last gained an achievement in SoT in February. Nah, my account is basically dead, beyond the twitch stream drops I got from watching Phuzzybond.

@XAssflameX I do not troll, or not in such a way that it reduces the quality of the time other players spend in the game. I'm all for mischief, to be sure. Just, so long as it does not damage the player base. I consider myself net negative salt export.
That said, I do enjoy PvP and that was my mainstay. But it just... wasn't worth it. I got nothing for it, no sense of progression, no ranking, nothing. I did have a good time with the crews of the ships I attacked, as I called "good fight" and whatever manners dictate. Lots of laughter. But I can get that in more polished games. SoT has a lot to offer, but then basically goes and dumps all over it with its lack of polish, despite having been out for three years.

  • @saynt-sorrows
I thought the game was made to PvP and laugh at other players and tell 'm ''haha I am better then you, you suck''. As there is nothing to gain benefit over. That's what create the toxicity problem in the game.

  • @xassflamex Nah, that's like saying "cars are made to run people over with since there is nothing to stop you from doing so."
Each player is responsible for their own behavior. The structure of the game does not serve as an excuse for people to be jerks. That decision is up to each individual.

Of course, Rare has not attempted to create a community that is immune to toxicity. That is their failing.
Yes, this is possible, check out the discord of IMMORTAL: Gates of Pyre - I'm a moderator and playtester there, and thus know for a fact that even in a competitive genre, toxicity can be absent in the community of a competitive game. You merely have to do it right, and Rare didn't bother. That is indeed their failing - not that this means that we have no responsibility for our own behavior.

But with a car you have a goal, you go from point A to point B.
In this game going from level 1 to level 75 on a reputation faction, doesn't bring you anywhere. Beside, if you run over people with a car, you'll end up in jail or on a psychiatrist, or both. lol

  • @saynt-sorrows i only said that i thought that you played the game still because you replied to a lo of the replies to your post which poses to me that you still care about sot so it seems reasonable to me that you would still play it to make sure your arguments are still valid. as for how i format my replies that is just me focusing on one topic that means i can get sidetracked and rant about another topic before i go back to my main topic i just write really fast without worrying about how it is organised.

  • @xassflamex And in SoT, you're supposed to report people after recording their griefing with Win+G, after which they may be banned.

The goal of what you do with a car is also something you create yourself, just like you create your own goals in a sandbox. Do you go for that Sunday drive to visit nature? Do you drive to work? Shopping? These are all activities you set yourself, rather than having the car set them for you. You could as easily set the goal of driving it into the next river. Do you? No. Why? Consequences.
Consequences are lacking in SoT, which is probably what you're really pointing at. With the exception of stuff like spawn-camping, as that is an actually bannable offense. Rare doesn't tell people though, which is their failure. They should be introducing people actively to the gameplay recording functions.

  • @saynt-sorrows

    1. Im extra here because of that and tired of the opposite as someone playing Video Games for around 36 years started 1984 with a cpc464.

    2. Agree !!!! I also come from more serious sailing games, i wish they would change it and also have more shallow waters that bigger ships cannot pass etc. The Sloops should be able to outmaneuever every ship by their turning speed and tacking.

    3. i agree sonwhwat but dont have a big problem with it as i dont PvP only or Focus on it and also dont doublegun.
So yeah its not perfect, i hope it makes sweaty PvP Shooter boys lose their fun AS i dont think they add anything to the game or community.

  • @stundorn

    1. Do you think that a lack of consequence is good for the game? If so, why? And, if you do think so, what do you think about the ways in which SoT does not fit that paradigm?
    2. I personally only need the sails to be fixed, and tacking to be geometrically rewarded over sailing into irons. I think that if you try to add more than that, you risk solo-slooping getting too nerf.
    3. Double-gunning has some serious drawbacks to it, aside from the hit reg. You can punish that if you have a cutlass. I should note that swords also get hit regged all the time. It's just more obvious with guns.

I dont have the time and will to grind for beeing competetive anymore and if you have that sort of item- and vertical progression, the 24/7 players just rule everything, the crafting, the economy, the regions, the farmspots, the PvP, but i'm ambitious casual at best and i played some open PvP full loot games the last years as they are the best to immerse for me. Dying and losing my loot even if it is only cosmetics is enough consequence for me and its good that it is a small consequence. I have rather everything and still millions to spend.
As someone who played as a PK in some games i can deal with many disadvantages.
SoT has to less for pure PvP / PK playstyle , but thats another story.
I like the even playingfield and that skill and experience is the only thing that makes you good. I'm mediocre at having skill maybe , but i'm above average about knowledge of the map, the world etc. and can compensate a lot also with my mindset at least when playing solo. And i mostly play Galleone with the crew.
To me it was or still is the perfect game, except the exploits we have, but Community is not, because Rare allows to much cheesing, exploits etc... and while having a good gamedesign and intend how to play the game , at least what i think as a Founder playing since alpha , their main audience always disagreed and they let them circumvent and cheese it up to today and create rather unintended playstyles , but this is what sells on Twitch and YT .
I can elaborate that more , but well.. . :-)

    1. I personally only need the sails to be fixed, and tacking to be geometrically rewarded over sailing into irons. I think that if you try to add more than that, you risk solo-slooping getting too nerf.

My stance about soloing, what i like to do sometimes and did before they adjusted AI world encounters and made them easier is way more unforgiving to encourage players to crew up.
Rare again want to please everyone and made solo slooping easier, in early Alpha it wasnt even possible and not the plan to do it.
Only because many cried and wanted it they allowed it afair.
And then they cried too hard and the Game was Made easier and easier in general and for soloing especially.

    1. Double-gunning has some serious drawbacks to it, aside from the hit reg. You can punish that if you have a cutlass. I should note that swords also get hit regged all the time. It's just more obvious with guns.

To me this is a Pirate Adventure Game, if you ask me this is more of a roleplay game than anything else, a Sandbox to immerse and do PvE mainly but have it all contested and PvP allways possible, but also easy to circumvent it avoid, so no hardcore PvP Sandbox at all.
But there is barely any roleplayers or people who like the random aspects of these Game or understand how PvE and PvP are knit together. They cheese and exploit the Game in favor of their PvX only playstyles , Thats the Main Problem and that Rare let them do it.
But Else they wont ve that succesfull and it would have flopped maybe or become a niche Game at max.

Gamers of today see 1st Person and a gun and tell you its an FPS PvP only Game :-)
Or that because its a Pirate Game with Thieves in the Name its is Seaof Murder Hobo and that exploits Like Animation cancels is Skill and Not Cheat/ exploit.

Well i actually laugh at it , but i also paused the Game because of this audience for some weeks , but most of the time i can deal with all of this pretty well and Login, immerse and have some fun.

  • If you're going to take a break or stop playing altogether, why write about it?
The game has a lot of problems, but a lot of pleasant moments.
In the next update, they will add something that I missed so much in this game and I am very happy with how the developers are implementing this.

  • K....bye

I disagree with your points other than hit reg that needs fixed but at this point I don't think it can be fixed

  • @barmaley7580 Cause SoT has a lot of untapped potential, that if realized, would probably make it the best game I would've played yet. As three years have come and gone, and these most basic issues have not been fixed or corrected, I leave.
That won't stop me from giving my feedback though. Who knows, maybe they'll pull a much belated Six Siege, unlikely as that is?

    @TekRantGaming bye, stay safe.

  • Not all right with the sails, you are right.
I miss the usual rain and the stormy howling wind.
We need to install small-caliber guns at the stern and bow of the ship.
I don't know what the progress and skills of the character should look like in such a game.

  • First 2 are of no real excuse.
Third is known but still not a deal breaker.

Why...I wanna know are people wanting to rant and hide it behind feedback while explaining why they are leaving.
    Sorry but “who are you?”

  • @burnbacon Do not read into other people's messages what is not there.

  • @saynt-sorrows
If you're sailing for progression, then you're sailing for the wrong reason. That's just a means to an end. What you really should be sailing for are the experiences! Granted, they're not all going to be good ones, being a shared world, and as with every game, having the occasional bug like hit-reg every once in a while - but surely your experiences haven't been all bad? Many of the encounters that I have had have led to memorable moments, great battles, and even new friends!

I'd like to hear about some of your great experiences - not just the bad ones.

As for sailing itself, I admit that it's not realistic, but there's a very good reason for this - gameplay balance. You see, Rare has had the foresight to ensure that everyone has a good time sailing, whether it be solo on a sloop or with a full-fledged galleon crew. Every ship has its strengths and weaknesses, and while sailing against the wind isn't practical, it works in the game with the logic that if you do it in a sloop, then you're suddenly the fastest of the 3 types of ships heading in that particular direction, because you have the least amount of sails blocking the wind to slow you down.

Another example is when your ship or pirate disappear and teleport when you get stuck. It's not realistic at all, but it serves the purpose of ensuring you can continue playing the game. Same idea.

As for hit-reg, it's definitely the biggest issue with the game right now, but it's being addressed carefully - Rare has stated that it's an incredibly hard and complex issue to fix and that it will take some time to really address all aspects of it and to do it right. They have already fixed some of it, like when under water, on rowboats, or while climbing up and down ladders, etc. I have also noticed that this issue effects some more than others since it's heavily network-related. For example, I may experience it maybe once a month while others experience it constantly.

How often do you experience it?

  • What kind of entitlement is required to make light of the fact you played a game then decided to stop for whatever reason? How is this earth shaking revelation so important the OP must respond to every post?

What would be far more interesting is if the OP returned, why, and what he may think of SoT after he left.

So what, OP played then got bored.
    Thanks for the non-event adventure.

    Not sorry.
