Thoughts on a bounty hunting mechanic

  • One of the most commonly suggested new companies or quest types is a system whereby bounties may be posted on players, encouraging other players to go hunt them. It's a solid idea, but I've had a few thoughts that expand on it.

    - Ships, not crew - Being able to post bounties on individuals has a few problems. It could lead to targeted griefing, it can be avoided without much loss by logging off until your crew goes to sell, etc. So bounties are placed on ships, not on their crew. Ideally, this would go hand-in-hand with some way to name ships, whether that's just a random name, a mad-libs style phrase selector, or a fully customizable name, but it would be so satisfying to put the bounty on the crew of the Salty Kraken, rather than just, "that a*****e sloop." You'd have to bring back some proof of sinking the ship, like the nameplate, the flag, or the wheel. Whatever it is would drop in the water when the ship despawns, so you'd have to stick around during the sinking too. This also can help with targeted ships logging off. If the ship logs off, they still drop their token, so the quest can be completed.

    - Only ships that sank you - This is kind of equivalent to Dark Souls' indictment system. You can only post bounties on ships that sank you. Why? Well, this ensures that ships are up for PvP, so solo sloops that aren't looking for a fight don't get unfairly targeted, and the sinking requirement means the crew is at least semi-competent. The overall company would probably be flavored as some sort of policing agency, so they're the ones putting up the bounties, and you're just reporting the crime. This also means that ships that are targeted are more likely to have treasure aboard. To be clear, anyone can take these bounties, but they can only be posted by someone who lost their ship to another crew.

    - No maps - this is my favorite part. The world is pretty big for the number of ships we have in it, so hunting ships might get kind of troublesome, but maps that lead you right to them might be kind of troublesome. So how do you track them? The bartenders. The bartenders have an option to ask who's been through the outpost recently. So make that option let you know if the crew you're hunting has been through. This encourages a few things I really like. It encourages hunted crews not to linger at civilized outposts, just like notorious pirates. This will encourage them even more to have treasure on board, making the reward for these quests very good. But this also might lead to the hunted crew using a deserted island as a hideaway, just like notorious pirates or even stashing their treasure to come back for later just like notorious pirates. A bunch of thematic stuff here. Perhaps the initial bounty will give their last known location no matter where you are in the world.

So anyway, those are my thoughts. Mostly I really like the idea of the bartenders telling you if the hunted ship has been seen in the area. It seems like a cool mechanic and a cool use for a mostly useless NPC.

  • I've been wanting something almost exactly like this. I wrote it a little differently though.

  • I love the idea of getting some kind of token when sinking a ship. It encourages more pvp by giving a small reward even if the ship doesn't have any loot.

  • It'll only work if there's higher bounties on hyper-aggressive crews. You know like a 2000g bounty on a galleon that's been sinking every ship they see.

  • @xxxxnoodlexxxx

Well, additional bounties placed on the same crew could compound. So the longer they survive, the more they're worth.

  • @thenittles I'm not a huge fan of the idea of players placing bounties on other players... it just adds a sense of 'punishment' for players who are good at PvP... any what if I wanted to sink a ship ONCE? because I saw an opportunity and wanted to take it... does that means if I'm successful I instantly have a chance of getting a bounty on my head?

    I've suggested a bounty sytem here: https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/49649/new-faction-combat-pvp

Whereby it's a bit more automated, and there is a certain threshold players have to pass before they get a bounty on their heads. (I haven't defined the threshold but it would be more than one ship). However this idea also combines it with an idea for a new faction which may not be feasible.

I do like the idea of a bounty but the fact someone can be sank and then just say 'pfft I don't like that! have a bounty! have fun!' doesn't sound good to me. I think we need more of a definition on what requirements need to be met before a bounty can be placed :) minimum/maximum money etc.

  • @forsakenwolf31 Agreed, there should be a baseline reward for doing it.. I suggested the idea of a faction for doing it but that isn't essential, there does however need to be a some form of reward I think for sinking ships, with almost new reward for sinking newbies.

I think positive rewards is a far better way to encourage healthier PvP, rather than a system which would essentially punish strong players.

  • You have some good ideas here. I actually like them all. But I think that if you can only target a particular ship then you could ONLY target Legendary Pirates as I think they will eventually be able to name their ships. But who knows, they might be able to extend "ownership" down to new pirates. As I personally think it would be easier to help identify friends and foes if all ships had names.

The one thing that I think would need to be different from what you have said is that there would need to be some method in the system, maybe on the bounty paper itself, is that it identifies if that ship is currently sailing. Then the whole bartender thing would be fine,

An then the whole aspect of the ship's crew deciding to leave the game would need some method of management since there are legit reasons that people need to get offline, but I can also see people abusing it as well.

But I fully agree that bounties are super necessary. I have had several posts about them. I also think that the system should apply bounties to any ships that have sunk many other ships. As those players obviously like PvP and would love to be a target. And it would mimic reality, as I would have to imagine that there would be complaints against missed merchant voyages and the alliances would get together and put bounties on pirates hurting their economy. This way, there is always available bounties to go after.

  • I like this mostly because I have always wanted to be able to name my ship/have my own custom flag and, whether or not I end up hunted, I would get to have that.

  • @thenittles how bout a bounty system that allows you to capture pirates that have been pestering you and turn them in, we have a brig for our crew, why not use it for our enemies?

    • maybe sinking more ships after a bounty being placed could automatically add to the value of your bounty
    • maybe, have a list of bounties placed IN the tavern as well. Might be too much work to render the images of the pirates as wanted posters, but some kind of poster with a bounty readout, and a collector sitting somewhere in the outposts/contracts office
    • this would lead to people who like PVP having a new play style where they specifically come in almost RPing as bounty hunters, since they know they'd get their PVP AND some loot, and I love that idea because you know whoever gets hunted pretty much asked for it. Not some jerks picking on someone.
