For now, goodbye Sea of Thieves

  • I've reached my limit of what I can and want to endure with Sea of Thieves. First I want to write a bit about what I love about the game and what have made me logging back on day after day for almost a year now.

The graphics and sounds in SoT is some of the best I've played. The art style reminds me of Monkey Island in many ways. And it's just a joy to take it all in. Especially in 4K and HDR on a good TV or monitor. Just amazing!

Same with the sound. It's just incredible the attention to details that's in this game. It in combination with the graphics is an experience second to none.

And then there's the "hand on" approach to everything in the game. Need sails? Well you have to lower it then! Adjust to the wind etc...all hands on approach that is something that for some reason is "lost" in so many games today.

Doing voyages with friends or strangers. Finding treasures, doing cargo runs and fighting waves of skeletons is fun and addicting. Filling up the ship and feeling the panic when the meg, skeleton ships or kraken wants it's pound of flesh is exhilarating.

But the reason I'm saying goodbye for now is "YOU". The other players.

I've had enough of the profanity. The trolls. And the type of player that is sadly often drawn to PvP type of games. Competitive player that dont care about anything but killing and sinking you. Often over and over again. Hindering you from getting any progress at all. Forcing you to either switch server or log off and play something else.

Everyone I've played with have quit the game. Many because they found it boring. But also quite allot because they just dont want to deal with the endless PvP. Now one year after launch I'm finding myself in the same boat. Same goes for my friend that's been with me on our sloop since launch.

We dont want to deal with PvP any more. It's ruining the fun for us. So until big changes happens we will find something else to play. I have hopes that the Arena will draw away the worst of the worst. But I doubt it will help enough as it's completely different then trolling and doing PvP on the open sea.

Thanks Rare for a fantastic time in Sea of Thieves! That said I hope you have gotten allot of messages like this over the year. And that you will do something to keep us playing. If not then thanks for a great one year and best of luck in the time ahead.

    Goodbye

You bought the game knowing there would be PvP. The game is based on unpredictable and unrestrained player interactions so that is what you should expect. There are also PLENTY of friendly players out wanting to form alliances.

As far as profanity or toxic voice communication, please report that and Rare will deal with it accordingly. We don't need those types of people on the seas.

The Arena mode will come to the game soon and Rare have stated in their dev update videos that the update will be coming with new story quests for The Adventure mode. I expect that this will drive the more competitive players to The Arena and more than likely calm the seas a bit more on the normal Adventure servers.

Sorry you had a bad experience. You can help weed out the toxic loudmouths, but I promise you being sunk and/or losing treasure is a normal part of Sea of Thieves.

  • I just wanted to understand why people buy a Online game called Sea of Thieves, whose theme is Pirates, which would attract all kinds of people (including toxic people), that would have battles in ships and pistols/swords to come here to complain and say that will no longer play because the Online game has Thieves, or in this case, Pirates, toxic people and battles.

Yes, we all did more or less. But we didn't know there would be no restrictions. No consequences. Everything is fair game in Sea of Thieves. And many will love that about the game. But others like me...well not so much.

I've been playing the game since launch. And tho the game has changed and grown in many ways. It's haven't in other parts.

But the part I'm focusing on in this post is PvP. And is the sole reason I'm for now saying goodbye to the game. It took one year.. I'm stubborn old man. But everything has a limit. And this weekend with the double XP event was it.

Me and my friend played for hours and hours. So close to becoming pirate legends. But hindered by other player over and over again. I've been frustrated by PvP for months. But with this weekend we played LONG gaming sessions and got exposed to other players allot. And it was 95% negative experiences. For us game ruining experiences.

As far as I'm concerned the content that's in the game now with NPC's threats to players would be enough to remove the one element that is the number one problem. Namely PvP.

Rare has the choice to either lose players to other games. Or to give us PvE servers, the option to disable PvP and/or some sort of consequence for attacking other players.

It's really a sad day for me. Because I really love this game. You know?... But as it's now PvP is destroying this fantastic game and the good memories I have from it.

And I'd rather hold on to the good memories then to have it replaced by frustration and anger...

  • I see an ship on horizon. Grab cannonballs, planks and bananas to prepare myself to defend. Stand on deck and watch the ship. It comes. We past each other. I wave my hands for an "hello". They do same. Alright.

Thats the most happened situation i have.

Another situation, which i must have in mind, because its an pirate game, is, that the other ship starts to chase me. Ok, i see a true bad pirat, prepare for fight. If i dont want to fight, i flee.

This are two situations, and both are in game. And if i cannot handle it, its the wrong game for me.

I can handle, because i know what awaits me when i start the journey.

...one time i want to have a cozy journey with some Contracts from companys, like catching chickens. Then i saw the skull. I choose to try to get the fort wealth. It ends up in an depressive fight with two other ships. I close the game because im angry.
But it was my fault, not the fault of other players. I choose to go the hard way.

I'm sorry if PvP isn't your thing, but this game does need a balance of PvE and PvP to be what it is. Rare has invented a wonderful shared world that allows for so much uniqueness in player interactions. That is why I as a player take great joy in seeing battles between player on the seas, and seeing people cooperate and form alliances. I think its such a beautiful thing for all of that to be in the one shared world like that.

On top of that, I believe that this mix of behaviors is what Rare wants its players to see, if that is the case, I doubt they'd offer a mode where you opt out of the full Sea of Thieves experience where player run-ins are more predictable and boring.

I've got some optimism for you though...

Try this out: If you feel you need to leave the seas for a bit, why don't you come test the waters once the mega update drops? I strongly feel that A LOT of people will be A LOT happier. PvP/Competition focused folks will be in The Arena, and people who play the Adventure will likely be trying out the new quests they keep telling us about. I'm sure we will still see sinking ships on the Adventure servers as we should, but I also feel quite strongly that the interactions will be more organic since those who are hunting players will usually be in The Arena.

One last thing - Rare have confirmed that Private Servers will come to the game at some point. They've said a few times that this is something they'd like to do so that people can create some custom experiences, like ship races and other sort of player invented games. We don't know much else about it other than that.

As someone who loves this game a lot, I do hate to think of someone just not being able to tolerate the game and have to put it down. So hopefully I've pointed out some positives here that you might be interested in.

That sounds like and ideal dream. But sadly it's not what happens most of the time. At least not in my case.

Since I'm not interested in PvP I and my friend are always on the lookout. Always prepping our ship with proviant for long fights and "escapes". Learned all the tricks in the book so to say. Just the other day we had some insane sailing between and around rocks. A brig lost to our navigation that time.

And then you sail your island to start "working". Minutes later. "Ship in sight!". So we leave unfinished. This time not so lucky as a brig is much much faster and with no option to get away or navigate tricky waters. We lose our ship. We sell often not to lose progress. So most of the time we dont lose to much loot.

Ok, back on the sea. Let's get back to the Island and continue. Almost there now! "Ship in sight!"

It's them again. Coming in fast. A big "sigh". Let's leave everything behind. Ignore the voyage. Change servers. Again.

    That's the usual experience sadly.

EDIT: And let's be frank. I've been playing for a year. So these "do this, expect this and that". Is all things I know. Experienced. Done. It dont change the fact that for me it's ruined a otherwise almost perfect game. I think the likes of Summit1G and others have most likely brought a type of player base that was not as much present before.

  • @binaryplayerone You don't have to leave. You can come sail with me. I'm also a stubborn old man. (Maybe more stubborn?) Anyway, I'm always looking for other old players to sail with so feel free to add me if you want to keep playing. Gamertag: Little Squash

Who knew pirates would be so lawless.

Rare has the choice to either lose players to other games. Or to give us PvE servers, the option to disable PvP and/or some sort of consequence for attacking other players.

Those threats/ultimatums statements always makes me laugh. "You should totally do what we ask otherwise my friends and I will leave".

When people weren't happy about the crossplay opt-out, everyone hung onto that tweet from Rare studio head Craig Duncan stating how the SoT player population was healthy and on the rise.

It's funny how that statement is now inconvenient for people trying to convince everyone that surely PVP is driving all the players away in drove suddently, and the game will die without private servers.

Why should there be consequences to attack people in a PVPVE pirate game? The consequence is that the people might come back to take their revenge, or even recruit allies to come deal with you.

It's really a sad day for me. Because I really love this game. You know?... But as it's now PvP is destroying this fantastic game and the good memories I have from it.

And I'd rather hold on to the good memories then to have it replaced by frustration and anger...

PVP is one side of the coin and is enhancing the game, not destroying it. You choose to react to it with frustration and anger, when you could decide to dust yourself up and learn how to deal with it.

Many people that didn't like PVP got to appreciate it once they got practice and more experience. If you could not muster that in a year of playtime, this game indeed might not be for you.

Hopefully you have great memories and stories out of it though.

  • I don't blame you, @BinaryPlayerOne.

This is not the first time I've said this on the forums... but there is no good reason for SoT not to have a PvE mode. Personally, I think it would work best in the form of a single player/four player co-op mode.

I have seen countless posts like yours since this game launched, and in general they have all been met with retorts that fail to address the issue. For every one person that says goodbye on the forums, how many thousands more are leaving or have left without saying a word?

To everyone who says that a PvE mode would split the player base: the player base has already split! The majority of players who wanted PvE already aren't playing the game.

If Rare introduced a PvE mode, then the game's active player count would increase. Rather that splitting the current player base, it would open up the game to a demographic of players that is currently not being served. It would attract the people who already aren't playing because they don't want PvP.

There is enough in the game world to warrant a PvE mode at this point. In fact, the most fun that I've had with this game has been during sessions where we never saw another ship. Further, how am I supposed to create my own experience/adventure when my experience is constantly being shaped by strangers that I don't want to play with?

Bottom-line: I would play this game more if I could sail around with just my friends.

  • @binaryplayerone Why not just take a break rather than leave?. Go and play something else for a while. Relax and recharge.:)
You might find after a break you'll be ready to return. Things will have moved on, Pirates would have come and gone and your new experience will be different from what it once was. Maybe I've been lucky but in all my time I have been playing this game (I sloop it too mostly) I can count on 1 hand the amount of times I have seen any type of toxic behaviour and there are processes in place to report this. I hope you return in the future to continue your Pirating journey to Pirate Legend :)
