Random crews...

  • Joining random crews, these are the results:

    1. Ship sails into the red ocean 30 seconds after I joined.
    2. Ship gets gunpowdered by a crewmate 2 seconds after I joined.
    3. Ship is sailing without any quests, loot or destination with 0% management.
    4. Same as 3...
    5. Boarded a ship that got crashed into a huge rock and got stuck, full wind in the sails, anchor up, holes in the middle and 3 people just walking around without doing anything. Oh... And no quest, loot or destination once again.
    6. Another ship without quest, loot or destination besides a bottled quest on the other side of the ocean and about 30 seconds after I joined the ship crashes into an island with one person just swording the shizzle out of a mast, other 2 went for repairs. No goal, no management, but hey... They did repair the ship, I guess.
    7. Joined a lobby that just seemed to have started, 2 out of the 3 crewmembers looked decent, seemed like they could actually get some things done. Noone took any materials to the ship but they did start a quest and left the outpost towards a destination. Too bad them 2 out of the 3 were either french or spanish, I think french but not sure... So communication was an issue.
    8. Joined a galleon as it sunk fighting a sloop, 1 out of the 3 crewmembers quit, the other 2 went on to voyage and didn't look too bad but I'm obviously not going to team with them if they lost to a sloop... First impressions matter... =þ (They spoke english too, so all in all it wasn't to bad a crew tbh)
    9. Again... Same as 3... But weirdly enough there was a Gold Sovereign aboard and another guy that looked decent. The ship was a mess however, lights on 1 side of the ship were dimmed as the other side was still lit, they were anchored in the middle of the ocean and were just trolling around as everytime I'd raise the anchor they'd drop it again...
    10. Got into a lobby with just 1 other crewmember, starting out at an outpost. Yaaay, now I get to wait at least 5 minutes to see if my crew is worthwhile... But at this time I had to go as life goes on...

At this point I just give up on random matchmaking.
Yesterday I played a random match with a full crew, we went to an unoccupied skull fort to get some easy money, they kept dying and 2 out of the 3 left as the 3rd went afk on the ship leaving me to solo almost the entire stronghold until a sloop came up, that I actually sank solo, just to continue and get to about wave 8 or 9 before a random spawned in without me noticing and blew up the ship with a gunpowder...

Guess I'm just venting... But this needs to change somehow...
Just wasted my 1,5 hour of gametime on trying to find a decent crew...

  • I usually solo sloop, but if I join a galleon I go in random most of the time. My experiences are vastly different. While I sometimes end up brigged for no reason other than "a friend" is going to join, I usually find myself with other adults and almost always English speakers. Timing is everything.

The earlier I'm on the more likely I am to encounter a group of younger players (not always a bad thing!). The later I play the better the odds I meet Aussies or Kiwis. Either way, the age group is vastly higher.

If I get an incompetent or just not-serious crew I do one of two things: either I goof around and join them in their craziness-- a great option because crashing boats is fun, or I soldier on and wait about 15 minutes and most of the randos drop and a crew "builds" around me. Last night did that and had an EPIC night and made three new friends. Just gotta play the game.

  • @sir-lotus Aye, I agree, grouppost are often the way to go.
I however wasn't going for a serious run, had about 1,5 hour to play only anyway, just wanted to have some simple quick fun and didn't even care about getting money.
Just wanted to log in and join an adventure, either PvP or PvE.
Searching a group (lfg) takes time as well, plenty of times people join groups just to find out that that isen't the group for them.
So to avoid that hassle I try random crews every now and then since a day or 3, I did make a few friends through it not too long after launch after all.
It's just sad that you can't "quickplay" in this game anymore without mostly ending up frustrated.
A game should be fun the moment you start it up, not become a frustrating event to find people you can actually play the game with.
It's starting to become similar to chatroulette... You expect people to chat with but mostly all you get is w*****s.

Today was just terrible though, these 10 examples I only started writing down in this forum around the 5th time I joined a random crew and got w*****s.
Normally I find a (half) decent crew within 30 minutes or so... (Switching crews takes me about 3 - 5 minutes just on loading screens on xbox...)
    But yea... Just venting... XD
I don't see a way to improve it, it's just something that bothers me big time...

  • This is the worst part of the game. Hands Down. Private crews aren't going to fix it entirely. unless they put some filters on the match making. I wont crew in a group that doesn't have 3/4 Microphones. Its just too chaotic and unorganized for me. I spent a good 2 hours the other morning trying to find a crew that could/would communicate. Finally gave up and watched some Netflix instead.

Exactly! All xbox players should use the console LFG feature that can be found on the PARTY TAB. Not sure if PC players can access this or not but if they cannot discord/forums/reddit are all great ways to find people who actually want to play the game.

On top of that you can look for people who like to PVP or people who just want to do VOYAGES. Random queuing is going to turn out bad at least 80% of the time.

  • random matchmaking is like joining the circus.

  • @sneakler xbox app on pc has lfg as well. And it's connected with the one on xbox, so you'll see posts from pc on xbox and vice versa.

@MindArchitect I know how you feel. I get good crews while doing random galleon in probably 25% cases. And I'd imagine that nr. will go down a bit more after private crews are introduced. I don't think there's a way to do anything about it. even if you could filter by mic/no mic or country or anything else, it'll still be a hit and miss...

    "We" can.

One of the things I couldn't agree with more is the idea that closed parties can't get here soon enough. I also feel that random parties should be fleshed out in some sort of pre-game lobby area, a tavern location that all players load into would be ideal to me. (VC would likely need to be off by default there), but really any tool that can help random players find like minded random players being built into the game is of value to my perspective.

"Clans" and "Outside websites" and "LFG" really are decent ways to help mitigate the issue as well.

The biggest issue new faces to the game seem to encounter is - random crews.

I don't agree with your perspective on all of the above in the OP, such as loosing to a sloop - seems a bit touchy to me - since I have sunk Galleons SOLO. Sloop can be done well and done right if your either lucky, skilled, or versus weak players. True odds are low(er) but it certainly can be done! It really comes down to assuring that they can't repair via either killing them quickly with a boarder or cannons, (or a really lucky Gun Powder barrel that nails them below deck mwahahaha).

But, even with my despite... There is not anything wrong with wanting a capable group who can communicate well and seem on point.

    And finding that Randomly?

    Yea...

and don't even get me started on Brig abuse...

Hahaha... XD That is a nice comparisson as wel!
Clowns running around, weirdo's stuffing their face with as much food (Bananas) as possible and people shooting themselves from cannons... =þ

Edit: And don't forget the bearded ladies! XD

While I agree sometimes you can find yourself in a group that doesn't fit your personal play style, I have never had an issue finding a game quickly. A lot of times I will create a post. The biggest key is to put exactly the type of play style you are looking for and how long you are looking to be gaming in the post and tag it properly. You should have no problem finding like minded players.
