S8: Matchmaking times and underwater tunnel

  • Let me just start off by saying how awesome this update is, PVP on demand is a dream come true. Not only does it satisfy the PVP crowd it also satisfies the PVE people that just want to grind. However, there are some problems.

Mainly it's matchmaking times, I'm not a developer at Rare so I'm not going to pretend to know what is causing the long matching times. It could be anything from the servers being wonky, bugs, too strict SBMM, region lock, or simply not enough players.

As an invading player, I have often found myself waiting 30+ min plus in the underwater tunnel for nothing to happen, and I can only see it getting worse over time.
Our time is valuable and it should be respected if the matchmaking times can't be fixed because of external factors (not enough players) then they should change how the searching for opponents works.
I personally believe the ship should only dive once it has actually found a match, once it has found a match, your ship and crew will be sailing underwater for 30 sec - 1 min so you can prepare yourself then you will break to the surface and start your match.

Obviously to dive your ship needs to be in the open sea so when the game has found a match, a prompt on the screen should appear telling the players it's ready to dive, you could also add a pulsing effect to the ship for when it's ready.

I also think the loot you have gathered should stay with the ship when you dive, I'm not sure if this is possible to do, seeing how the game is set up with the portals and everything but if it is possible I would consider enabling it. This would encourage people to actually carry loot and the defending team could get a little bit more of a reward if they manage to sink the invaders.

The reputation gain seems to be a little bit too slow at the moment, especially for defending teams, consider increasing it.

  • The update is great yet the matchmake times are too long, specially for galleon crews. It happened time and again that after a 3 or 4 winning streak the matchmaking just becomes impossible making underwater waiting seem infinite.

  • As an invading player, I have often found myself waiting 30+ min plus in the underwater tunnel for nothing to happen,

Could also be, 1) No results? or 2) The faction you are attacking doesnt have enough counters. Meaning..Mostly Reapers not finding Athena players (so far the best faction is Reaper due to Skeleton Curse)

    Our time is valuable

Yet you decide to play Online :p

I also think the loot you have gathered should stay with the ship when you dive

    Why?

This would encourage people to actually carry loot and the defending team could get a little bit more of a reward if they manage to sink the invaders.

Huh? Invaders are after sinking ships, and hoping they have loot. You either get one or both. While Defenders get to Keep there reward along with I believe bonus points for surviving?

The reputation gain seems to be a little bit too slow at the moment

Ive seen this one A LOT. Even during Milestones. It a grind. Look at the rewards were getting, some high demanding stuff. Do you want it to be easy?

I've tried with both factions and the results are the same, I've also gone for hours without getting invaded, so something isn't working as intended

I hope this is an attempt at a joke, sitting on an endless underwater ride is a massive waste of time and could be better used for gathering more supplies / loot

    Why?

It could encourage invaders to keep diving it would become a high risk, high reward kinda thing.

That is all correct, you know how else defenders can keep their loot? Simply by not opting into PVP, if invaders could carry loot with them into other servers, defenders would have more of an incentive to actually opt into PVP. For newer crews the reputation isn't worth it, they want gold.

Where did I say I wanted it to be easy? I mainly want a reputation boost for defending teams so more people would opt into PVP and defend themselves
The milestones are something that happens passively while playing the game, most of us don't even think about them.
The curses are something we are supposed to earn by doing a very specific activity, which is the hourglass PVP, so these things aren't all that comparable in my opinion.

  • Having timers on the battles might help with this. They will never tell us how the system works like if it takes region into account etc. I would imagine for sake of fair play it might be regional just for the sake of ping. Though I believe clicking "set sail" looks at your region while merging doesn't really care as much which is why you can load into a US server and run into people from other regions of the world, because they merged onto your server.

So depending on the factors we will never know the ques can be longer. It seems 2 things definitely play into the match making though there is a skill rating system which goes up the more matches you win, but it also looks are your kill streak. It seems to more heavily factor your skill into the match making. I guess the streamer MixelPlx already hit 100 and he was told directly by the developers that you should lower your hourglass after a kill streak of 4 as it will impact your que time. As he was going for insanely high streaks and the ques were taking over an hour or something.

True, with the way matchmaking is working you are lucky to make it past 4 wins streak. After that the waiting time is insane and no crew however dedicated will wait for an hour till next match.
