Cutlass blocking

  • Now that guns have been addressed I have some feedback on the cutlass.

I love the cutlass, always have, even during the double shot dark days I would keep one at my side. I love the mobility, dodging around and lunging at the right time to take down even groups of foes.

But there is one scenario that just doesn't feel right.

When fighting multiple assailants, sometimes you happen to get forced into blocking, and kind of find yourself stuck in place, never getting a moment to make some distance. You remain eternally locked into the block. Then a 3rd person can just go around you and shoot you dead or sword you, and there's no real agency or way to get out of it. It's keep blocking and die or stop blocking and die. Those are my choices.

Now, I'm totally open to advice, perhaps there's a trick to it, that I'm just not perceiving. And 1 vs 1, this issue seems to be less of a problem as releasing the block and just swiping at the cost of some damage seems plausible.

My suggestion however is to add something, I'm not sure the word for it, parry maybe. Basically what I would like is that when someone swipes you when you are blocking, the ability to push back against their sword by timing a button at the moment of the strike. A little knock back for the attacker and a little knock back to you, to create a gap.

This will allow you to regain your composure and continue to dance.

  • @macdoland I may be wrong, but I believe there is a knockback for attacker and defender, if a pirate completes a three hit combo and at least the third one has been blocked.
Your probably well aware that you can jump to any direction while blocking.

Well, I love the cutlass myself, but I think it's a lil' too strong now. I am totally fine that a pirate gets no longer slowed down, if he misses a swing, but I think, if he hits a enemy pirate with his sword he should be slowed down like in the old days. This would be more balanced in my opinion. ^^

  • @darkmore111 I have seen this knock back in 1 vs 1 combat. Maybe this is in my imagination and I'm doing something weird or wrong, or perhaps there was an obstacle behind me. But when I'm being swiped by multiple people, I get the impression that it goes on forever, it occurred to the me just the other night, I was just left there standing, puzzling what I should do next.

  • @theunionjames Yeah you're probably right, its tough to avoid in the cramped underbelly of the sloop, but maybe the mistake was being there in the first place.

Hard to avoid when it's filling with water though haha

  • @macdoland Aye that is a tough situation.

A thought why it may look like your not knocked back: If you get hit by a sword and can't block it, you have a very very short stun. Maybe in the moment were you got knocked back, another hit has stunned youd and you haven't been pushed back after all? That's pure theory, I don't know if the mechanics work like this.

However in the old days you could jump backwards and run away, since the sword attacker was slowed down. I think today the one with initiative is almost always in advantage, so attack may be the better defence for now.

  • @darkmore111 yeah totally that might be the case, there's a tiny bit of clunkiness with the sword, that could probably use a bit of ironing out.

A lot of the time, it leaves me questioning whether I did something wrong or if it was the sword that let me down. Such as the dodging in any direction that you mentioned previously. It is my impression from experience that if you are struck while trying, it cancels. The rapid swipes from multiple people probably shut this down effectively.

And like @TheUnionJames mentioned perhaps by that point you should just accept that multiple people on you is already a game over scenario.

I just think it would make the sword play more interesting over all to throw in some defensive options when you're forced onto the back foot, especially since more often than not I'm outnumbered and playing with that disadvantage already.

Just a suggestion, other than this I'm quite happy with the cutlass as is.

I didn't see your post at first. For the Sloop I may have a tip for you. On port said, left of the mission table you can find a small spot to grab the port ladder. It needs some training, especially with high waves that shake your ship, but it can give you a advantage in combat.
