The forums are a general mess

  • Hi, to be honest, at wits end right now with these forums for several reasons, but now its sorta boiled down to some main points that just j*****e in the wrong way, you know.

Ill first of list some key points I'll be talking about, with the more important ones I believe first.

    1. The general hate towards cross platform, and what system some one wants to play on.
    2. General negativity towards the game and the community
    3. The Sea of Thieves forums as a second hand info booth
    4. Clutter of reposts of same topic, or reasons to post a new topic because of threads were shutdown/dead
    5. Users that are general negative to be negative, trolls, and necromancers
    6. Locking threads
    7. Anything else I can think of

So to start this off, I want to say, force cross platform is good. I dont care. Its not CSGO or some twitchy shooter or some jank.
The general negativity towards PC players because mouse and keyboard and Specs and such is sorta of a b****r for me, I have met some amazing people on these forums, dont get me wrong, but it just seems more people just dont like cross platform because PC players and the age old question PC vs Console.
This is where indirect negativity and such plays a part, if someone wants to play on a certain system let them, no need to bash on them or say we need to remove your ability to play with your friends and such, cross platform is still an experiment in my eyes, and its going well, but some people on these forums just dont like them. @PersonalC0ffee once said along the lines of...and dont quote him or me, but basically it was along the lines of how much hate PC players get on these forums and its basically is a b****r towards them, and me, and for those that enjoy playing the game on their pc but with a gamepad, and so on.
Its in general leads to toxicity, and toxicity feeds into more toxicity. The deckhands try their best to contain it, by locking forums and banning people, but sometimes, that isnt enough.

Now the next part, might touch a nerve. Some people like to just p**p on a game just because they had a bad experience or they can, trolls basically, and it can lead to big fires happening.
The problem I have is why some people have good points and valid arguments, its when it devolves into pointless name calling and causing a ruckus, leading to bans being issues and locked threads happening when they didn't need to be locked.
    Which is a problem.
Another major problem with this is creating dummy accounts to troll and cause misinformation and such. Someone pointed out that the Destiny forums because how negative and cluttered it got, made it where people that own the game, can only access the forums. Then like a flip of a light switch, it got much nicer, and a lot more game based and helpful. Why cant this happen? For those that own the game, or have gamepass? Id rather see this happen than more needless bans on accounts that in reality, shouldn't even be here.

Ok Ok, what do I mean by a second hand information center?
Well think of it this way, all the information is mainly posted on their twitter, and we are left with what the community, us, are willing to post, and not the game developers themselves.
Thanks to @Kat-Truewalkerr for always keeping us up to date the best you can with all SoT news and such, especially telling us its our last chance to finish THD! But thats simple. The problem is, we dont get direct info but a few threads open up by a few deckhands, or a link to something on twitter.
We dont get say a post on the Ebon Pistol livestream (Ugh...I know...bringing this up) Or about the chips ahoy promotion! It was us the community that informed us! But still, its just another community member, it doesn't have the blue background or the eyeball to know its important like the deckhands/mods get.
So why do we get second pickings? You guys made this forum, use it more often. Inform us about updates and whats going on more often here, than twitter, or hell, just drop a link to the twitter that links back to this on the game dev page to atleast let us know you changed something, or posted a video. Small things can go far you know, like the ammo box being moved.

Oh boy...reposts and such, this will mostly be about cross platform posts and safe havens and so on posts, we see these more often that actual fun and interesting posts. If I wanted that kind of experience I'd actually get up on time. With a good chunk of posts it seems to be talking about cross platform or something we have talked about several HUNDRED times before. With a mega-thread (or really...was) dedicated to the discussion to the topic of things, but even with it around, a few drops escaped, as in a few drops, a post or two a day. With it closed, those few drops now make a puddle. It gets to the point that we have talked about every angle of it and its tiring. Leading to a round and about argument of needless things, when the whole point of the game is to have fun. These forums are for discussion, not to basically bully people because they want to play PC, or Xbox, whether your new to sea of thieves, or whether your sitting there being the sea police. I'd like to see personally, those threads sorta locked, because it typically leads to more toxic actions (I can even say I took part in those toxic actions.)
    Oh, and stop necroing posts.

So, this goes back to what I said about someone talking about Destiny's forums, why do we allow people that do not own the game, or have a subscription to gamepass on these forums? for more valuable feed back? I doubt it. With the forums being like it is, it leads to people who just want to cause unrest, and cause flame wars. Why? It leads to people that dont even own the game, to argue about something they saw in a article and just keep at it.
I'll just end this point here, or else we'll end up talking about the beating on the dead horse gif.

Locking threads, why does it have to be manual? Why not auto lock threads past a certain date if it remains inactive? Why dont you delete threads? Just in general questions from me, a user on these forums have to the developers of the forums.

The last points I was going to say, were covered on the previous points.
I'd like to give another massive shoutout to some of my favorite forum users for just in general being fun and talkative.
@Kat-Truewalkerr for just being one of the more cooler forum users, just a all around sweetheart and a joy to read their posts.

@xGODKEVIN @PersonalC0ffee for just defending pc players and the playerbase in general (I know there a few more, but I cant remember usernames right off the bat...I am sorry.)

@Sir-Lotus for keeping us up to date with E3 and a few other tid bits! And being a general positive person in the community

Just, the forums in my honest opinion, doesn't hold up to what needs to be accomplished for a game that the forums were made for.
The forums should be a way to keep up to date with the developers and whats going on with Sea of Thieves as a whole, but its left to us as a community, to pick up the slack of the developers. Which information can slip even from us.

This is no way hate towards Rare or anything, I enjoy this game, I'm very excited for SP00PY SKELE SHIPS! and Volcanic Ash! The new Brig ship and ROWBOATS! (there better be a achievement for doing a race with them) but I just feel these forums could be handled better.

Its been real guys, but I think I'm going to take a long needed break for these forums, cheers!

  • @ant-heuser-kush Eitherway, they'll have to go far and beyond to troll or clutter forums if they make another xbox account and so on, and the trial still needs credit card info and such.
I'll still be around reading the replies to a few things, but for the most part, I believe needs to be more present in this forum.
People are breaking rules, stuff is being broken, and in general hatred towards PC is saddening.

  • @onyx-wartooth
    Necromancers lol. Good post mate

  • @nwo-azcrack Yep, if your bringing back the dead, your a necromancer.
Its always been great seeing familiar faces and new faces in the forums, being said for you and @Ant-Heuser-Kush i couldn't add you guys to the list because i forgot how to spell the usernames exactly.
Its been awesome. These forums at its core is great, but its the small things that can kill it for some.
I rather not let that happen and post how I feel about this subject matter in a fashion thats easy to understand and goes in depth with it.
    Cheers!

@Ant-Heuser-Kush No, we as humans can not co-exist! Thats why ps4 and Xbox's still exist! BLUE OR GREEN! Jokes aside, I cant wait to see my favorite games being able to play with anyone regardless of consoles, and we dont have to sit there and be like...i wanna have the new PS because of a friend, but my other friends have the new NINTENDO system and so on.
We can only go forwards for here.

  • @onyx-wartooth Wow. It's bad enough seeing it in forums. It's even worse when encountered in-game and through the official Discord channel...

  • @personalc0ffee
You arent the only one dumb enough to come here day after day. I would love to see that only ppl who bought the game get to comment too. But with the game pass giving ppl an opportunity to try it and leave feedback, its a tough call. I mean ya their feedback may be helpful, but they didnt invest in the game like the rest of us.

  • I'm all for locking down the forum. Plenty of threads that pop up constantly by "new accounts" most likely created by the very same loud vocal minority trying to make it appear as if more people are with them. Cheap.

  • Most posts I put are in Disscussion/ suggestions yet 70-80% of response's are "get good" "Stop crying be a better pirate" "It's a pirate game be a pirate" Those general response's drive me up the wall all my posts in that section are exactly that a discussion or a suggestion and I ask for more if others have more suggestions. But always get pointless response's like above its exhausting.

How about you users read the posts, discus and add proper suggestions the trolls/ silly reply's need to be just removed by admins

  • @personalc0ffee
Ya thats my fault. I dont really value game pass feedback. I mean it can be helpful, but most gamepass users who try it out and come here to suggest stuff really dont know much about the game. They give it a quick try and come here and complain they are glad they didnt buy it. Im on the fence if they should get to post here

  • There’s a bunch of existing threads on this topic as well. Your doing nothing different than the people campaigning to stop forced crossplay. Your opinions on the matter aren’t anymore relevant than theirs. Here’s a thought if every other topic on the forums is about crossplay let’s treat it like the big issue it clearly is

  • @personalc0ffee yes I get that in general talk section or that when someone rants "wawawa he sank me" or "why did he do that" threads but when its a discussion/ suggestion thread that's not a discussion or a suggestion its simply pointless just seems to spill over into the other threads that are discussion/suggestions.

  • @personalc0ffee I do what I want

  • @nwo-azcrack just so ya know I'm a game pass user and I have been before the game even came out I'm also 50/50/50/3 the same could be said that had their mammy buy the game and they only play it for a few hours

  • @pixelhood
I know mate. Im not hating on gamepass users. I have one myself, but i preordered this game. I know their feedback can be valuable. Thats why i said im on the fence about this issue. I have seen about a 100 threads of gamepass users who try it out, then come here and try and change the game before they even know how to play. My bad if i made gamepass ppl seem less valuable. I didnt mean it that way. Alot of my mates play using only game pass. And they are getting up there in skill amd lvl too

  • @nwo-azcrack Yes I can see your point to be honest but again I think that it will always be an issue with game pass as it will always will be used in 2 ways

    1. Pay and keep game pass all the time.
    2. Use it to demo new games and get a small discount.

It also annoys me too, like going to see a movie watch it all vs the guy who watches the trailer and calls it c**p

  • Just because y’all post the exact same thread from the other side of the fence makes your thoughts & opinions super validated ? Here is a thought people can say whatever they want as often as they want & as loud as they want. Y’all constantly complaining & crying about them doing so is the exact SAME THING as those crying daily about crossplay

  • @captain-greyjoy
I think OP is right about this. There are like 4 crossplay threads up right now. They should all be in one thread and the others closed. Not saying they cant have an opinion. But it really does just spam up the board

  • @captain-greyjoy the fact you can get your post deleted or even a forum ban no, no you can not say what ya want.

  • @personalc0ffee
If i have to read one more thread about bountys where the poster gets excited like they have an original idea....... ima make myself walk the fricken plank

  • @personalc0ffee @NWO-Azcrack

Remember these pirates are just as excited about the game as we are and everyone is new once...

Be nice to the new folk you never know they may surprise you! ;)

Get involved even if you've seen the topic a million times before.

  • @musicmee
Lol im trying mate! I promise!

  • @nwo-azcrack I agree with that statement 100%.

  • @personalc0ffee I'll say whatever I want.........bahaha

Jokes aside I agree and your name has just made me want a coffee :(

  • @pixelhood am I not saying whatever I want? If I were to be banned could I not come back under a different name as the OP articulated? Is this post gonna stop the daily crossplay threads? Most likely not, matter of fact I’m gonna make it a point to start a new one weekly moving forward. Have fun watching me do what I want 😎

  • Oh as much as I despised them to begin with it pains to say....

    Bring back the Mega Threads!

  • @musicmee
They need them back so bad. Since the crossplay thread got locked, it has been a mess

  • @onyx-wartooth Lol if I had a dollar for every post about cross-play I could afford everything in the SoT merch store. I don't even comment on those threads anymore, it's a waste of time.

And the necros lately have been crazy. IDK what it is. Maybe because we have spent so much time telling people to use the search function instead of making multiple threads about the same topic but they don't know how to use the "newer than" feature lol.

And yeah, I made a thread long ago about how the official website is completely under utilized. I made a twitter just to keep in the loop with game updates and I hate it. Official site should be the first place any information goes in my opinion. There have been times where twitter updates failed to make it to the official discord as well.

  • @onyx-wartooth nicely written, thx for posting this. (and for that shout out)

I agree with most of what you said, but I don't know how I feel about locking the forums for players only. It would help a bit, but might also drive away some of the people, who might want to buy the game (or get game pass), but have some questions first. Or the same for recurring players.

I'm also not sure, how to handle it on the technical side. Who gets the access? Owning digital copy or gamepass can be checked easily with API. But what about gamesharing, sharing gamepass or physical copies (you can always sell those)?

Do we limit it to people who played the game during the last day, week or month? I don't think this is doable in a simple way. And also regarding new accounts, if we decide to allow access to people, who play the game, what's stopping me from creating 100 new accounts on my xbox, because of gamesharing. Which would negate one of the main arguments for locking the forums.

Anyway, it's still only what, not even 3 months after release? SoT is still pretty much in the middle of spotlight, with it being the first big title to promote game pass's 1st day release, with E3 etc. Give it a bit of time and I'd say it'll get better around here. I know I'm not going away anytime soon. (even tho I'm already over a month without my xone and it's starting to make me really angry, I might stop being so positive pretty soon)

  • Good read!!

Ya, the negative people are like broken records on here. I swear some must have multi accounts just for up voting themselves and to have someone to agree with the garbage they post.

Hard to think people could like the same negative comments over and over. The best part, it is from the same people who posted it the day before.... if not last couple months straight.

I wish I could just block some people so I don't have to even see these type of posts.

  • I think I can address one point, information.

When our community was much smaller, we were able to post things to the Forums and know that within a matter of minutes, everyone would see the post. Everyone would follow the Forum Community Manager (that's me!) and get the most up to date information when I posted it.

This is no longer the case. The community is much larger and not everyone follows me!

So to combat that, we have the Status Page and we also share it across our social channels and other community spaces, Discord and the Club. We used to have a special category on the Forum before we had the Status Page where we'd post game updates to the community, but it was very underused, so we moved to the Status Page.

We also used to be the first to post our videos or articles, but honestly? You guys just kept beating us to it! Regular posters like @Musicmee were always very speedy and posted before we did. Rather than constantly shutting down community threads to direct them to our 'official' threads (which the community has always disliked) we've left the news posting to you guys. Unless it's something we really want to shout about, and then you'll find it in the Announcements category!

  • @khaleesibot Thanks for the shout out. I'm still trying to do my bit... and you're right, we do have a tonne of community members posting the news seconds after we find it out. The community are great at doing that, not only that, but I feel we're more sociable and responsive to the non-official threads.

Thanks for replying :) It's good to know you're still here. I think we had felt a little abandoned... but not anymore. Sorry about that.

  • This is great, an actual discussion people!
So first off, @khaleesibot thank you so much for that bit of insight, that I didn't know about, and why you guys post mainly on twitter now and leave us to post.
The matter of speed of information is fast, and I guess if the community beats you to posting just shows how good of a community there is.
@Musicmee Thanks for always keeping us up to date, for those that dont use twitter often enough, like me, it keeps us in the loop.

So back to certain users certain privileges, owning the game, to be able to use the forums. I'm currently waking up, so I am sorry if I didn't get who ever said this, wanna say it was @NWO-Azcrack that did? The destiny reaching lvl 5, a super easy goal, especially knowing how easy it is to level up, you basically complete the tutorial and the first level and your done. That I can say would be a better way to approach it then ownership/game sharing accounts. Because you would have to go far and beyond to really want to cause a ruckus, ingame time, new account info, etc etc.
As much as I would love to see people that are interested in the game be able to use the forums, I'd say, let them view the forums, but not be able to post.

And for all that said it was a great read, I am humbled.

  • @ant-heuser-kush You were totally right definitely did get banned 😂 still do what I want though.

I do apologize if my initial post did nothing to further discussions after re-reading thread I do realize this. My apologies.

My initial thoughts remain the same. Just because some users here are more forum savvy than others & more knowledgeable about functions & features. Shouldn’t mean others can’t post where ever they like. The elite forum users shouldn’t be the only ones who opinions get heard just because they know all the forum etiquettes & which threads to post in, with their immense knowledge of everything forum, you’d think it would be easier to overlook activities they frown upon 🤷‍♂️

Just because one persons tired of hearing/seeing the same things everyday, doesn’t mean everyone’s heard it & or tired of discussing it. These are public forums & controlling/pleasing the masses is nearly impossible. With all that said, again my sincerest apologies. I’m logging out since these discussions rarely go anywhere anyway & I’m clearly banned & shunned.

  • @ant-heuser-kush I like that too, but still, I tend to overlook important things unless it has the blue background and the eyeball, because with those, you know its important.

Still super hyped for the new ships. Yes a rowboat is a ship to me.

But this is something Im not too clear on, can a deckhand or such, make a post be highlighted as important or big?
Like news and such, that we as a community posts?

  • @personalc0ffee said in The forums are a general mess:

I think they devs do not use this forum for the exact reasons, you yourself are taking a break.

To put it very simply, it's a crud fest.

The same, tired, horse beaten topics are posted day after day (even if Rare gives official replies), the hostility, hatred, and cynicism is through the roof, any semblance of discussion that is happening is dragged back to the same 3 topics of the day no matter what thread it is or what is being discussed and the sheer volume is just too much to moderate. Our Deckhand teams are working their butts off, so thank you guys. I know you all work very hard.

Most times you don't see the old salts posting except in very specific threads, they just don't come here anymore because of the reasons we are bringing up. I"m the only one stupid enough to keep coming here.

I was against locking down the forum but no, I think it needs to be done as well. If you don't own or subscribe to the game, you don't get to comment. Why should you anyway? Your feedback ain't valuable for a product you don't use.

Perhaps that's incredibly elitist and anti-community mindset but something needs to be done to make it stop.

And if you think it is bad here? Heh, go check the official discord anytime something is happening they don't like. It's like here but magnified by 100x and in real time.

Took the words right out of my mouth, lad.
