Sea of Sharks.

  • So what used to be Sea of Thieves is now Sea of Sharks. After yesterday patch there is huge amount of sharks everywhere you go. Even if I go to beach of outpost you get 4 to 5 sharks after you. As it now means that you cannot do shipwrecks anymore because you are eaten alive before you get back to you ship. Even if you manage to kill two sharks around you (usually only one) there is still at least three sharks to finish you.

I can understand that you want to have you players to get excited next week expansion but THIS IS NOT HOW TO DO IT. Basically flooding the seas with sharks you have managed to kill all the fun from the game.

If this is the direction you want to take your game by killing all the fun from it with idiotic patches and game design ideas then perhaps it is me to time to leave this game once and for all. Probably still hanging there over the weekend hoping that you will do something for the amount of sharks but if not then Goodbye for good...

  • It's part of the marketing and the lore for the upcoming Hungering Deep expansion. 👾👻☠️🦖🦕

  • I have to say that the sharks are more OP, and that anount thats spawns is overated!
And u cant even get close to the water untill u have 2-6 sharks after you!

I agree that this killing the underwater life and sneak attacks because now they are nearly not worth doing!!! And like TS Said wrecks!!! We were looting a wreck for 10-15min!!! And those [Mod Edit - Circumventing Profanity Filter] sharks!!!!!

  • I agree that the sharks have spawned a bit too much lately, and they have become to OP. They move faster, and attack faster.
You are unable to defeat them if there are more than 2 sharks in the water.
They also spawn to your location to fast.

It was better the way it was, it made it more enjoyable being bitten in the [Mod Edit - Profanity] by a shark hehe.

I will not quit playing this game though, that was a bit to much harsh of a statement on your side :)

  • Come on man, it's cool!! In that it changes the way you play the game - and it's only temporary anyway.

I've always thought the sea was a tiny bit too safe, so this adds a new element. I sailed past a hapless pirate being chased and ultimate eaten by a pack of four sharks yesterday - added some cool flavour to my voyage.

Shipwrecks aren't impossible by any means, but they're a bit more risky now, so you have to keep your wits about you.

  • Noticed more sharks last night. I remember they mentioned in one of their videos before release that they might change the world for particular events. For example; that they could increase shark spawns. I guess that's what they've done here. Maybe a little unnecessary, but I can't say it's ruining the fun for me.

    Just... swim faster?

  • I might be stupid but there is two ways for marketing your upcoming dlc. There is good way and bad way.

In a good way you try to get your player excited by adding perhaps some random treasure drops or distants glimpses of some new monster or dropping some lore into some islands. But you do this with a way that you don't kill fun from the game.

In a bad way you do it like this by flooding game world with things that kill you fast and make part of the game now pretty much unplayable like shipwrecks and pretty much any beach / sea part of the game.

So if you want to have your players to leave from game before you new DLC is launched this is the way how it is done by bad marketing with ridiculous amount of sharks...

  • @alatami1 Sounds a little bit overdramatic to me, but if it's making you feel that way then I guess that's not cool.

  • @alatami1 If you go and the W-SW side of Shark Bite Cove there is Merrik there and you can ask him what's wrong with sharks. Is part of the upcoming DLC and is nice that things mix up a bit, i'm sure they will back to the normal spawn rate leater in time.

  • @alatami1 The shark spawn is a bit too much, just like the environmental skeleton spawns. I just think sharks should be a one shot kill or two shot at most.
Sharks feel too tough for being sharks.

  • @alatami1

As always, you need to read around and decipher the clues -
The Sea of Thieves changes as often as the tides, so don't miss out!
is one line from the webpage, suggesting this is only temporary - this little snippet of conversation, as @CR0N0D says, also suggests the shark numbers might be due to some other reason......

Oh and i forgot the Pirate Times...

    Increased reports of shark activity....
Several sailors have asked the Pirate Times to issue a warning of shark attacks on the rise. Nowhere seems safe from this increase in toothy terror, with pirates from the Wilds to the Ancient Isles reporting unusually numerous marine maulings – as if “something’s stirring ’em up”, to quote one superstitious old sea dog. On the bright side, sales of peg legs have doubled. Watch your toes, pirates!

  • Okay, have to find that Merrick today evening for the more info and I do hope this is temporary thing with sharks...

And for that overdramatic part, yes I might be but have noticed that if you are not dramatic enough nobody cares your point of view. And when I am playing solo, five sharks around you has pretty much killed all the fun.

With group someone else can try to help you with those but it is still too much.

It doesn't need much perhaps group of three sharks might be better than these five or more...

  • @alatami1 I think we’ve got used to there not being many sharks. I do think their need to be more but maybe 2 per pirate with a quick respawn is a little to much, especially after 2 chomps and you’re a gonna! Lol.

  • @alatami1 I get where you're coming from, but - and this is just a suggestion - you might want to try a more measured approach with the complaints, because I think overdramtic posts sometimes get overdramatic responses...

  • I did a 2 player wreck salvage last night, 6 (could of been 8, I stopped counting) sharks appeared on our first return to our ship, we jumped back on the boat, killed all the sharks, did 2 more dives without anymore sharks spawning. I get it's tied in the the new content, no issues here, just let go of your loot and swim faster back to the boat, pick it up when clear. I didn't die, think my mate died once, not the end of the world. ☠️

  • If you think a few more sharks are an issue for you, what you gonna be like with this new megladon type monster? hahaha

  • I looted 3 wrecks tonight, and sharks were not an issue despite there being more of them in the sea lately. I know why they are here and I like it.

I also like the new ominous sound that travels underwater. If you have not heard it yet, just submerge yourself, sit still and listen. You won't hear it at first, but a few seconds later you will. It's not an obvious sound, but if you listen carefully, you can make it out...almost like a hungry creature calling out from the deep. 😎

Merrick is on the southwest side of shark bait island on the outer ring. You'll see him at a beach campfire drunk as a dog.

go and play the game, and talk to the dude at the beach... then you will get an spoiler of the upcoming dlc... or read the news...

I think there will be relevant difference there. Those sharks are now everywhere but I do think that the new monster will probably be like Kraken and randomly appearing in the seas. Not in the every beach or shipwreck were you are going to anchor your ship.

And yes the new monster will kill me at least when I meet first time with it. Same happened with Kraken but couple days ago we were able to won Kraken so perhaps there is change to beat the new monster with good crew as well. And I do sail with crew time to time.

But that doesn't still change the situation that there is too much sharks in the seas after the patch for me. This is purely my point of view and if that doesn't bother others so be it.

I do think still that there is better way to marketing your upcoming DLC than making those seas infested with sharks. It is kind of odd that you can play hours without crossing with other ships/players but as soon as you dip your toe in the water there is five or more sharks immediately there.

Anyway I rest my case here and continue with other stuff somewhere else :-)

  • RARE! I Did a shipwreck, could not get the treasure aboard because there was too many sharks. Rare Please take a look at the ratio of sharks in the water. It is unbalanced. Before the latest patch it was ratio was low. Now, the setting is on high, and needs to be somewhere in the middle. Thank You

  • @sergeant-monkey Nope, it's not impossible you can almost everytime just swim right to the shark then a bit to the side and he won't be able to bite you.. It's just temporary and it's finally a enemy that you have to care about.
Rare, thanks for that introduction, I think it's fun and shipwrecks are mot that boring anymore :)

  • Sure, it might be tied to the new content, but it is still unbalanced and unrealistic in all parts of the map.

    I love you people
Don't know how game mechanic work ? Then post on forum that game unfair !
    a) Its patch-event for first update WITH Sharks threat
    b) Sharks don't atk in SHIP HULL
    c) You can throw loot from sunked ship and let it flow above, then take it from water surface

  • I love it, it's a bit mental, but different. I think long term it would need balance. But as a temporary thing it's pretty cool. I always thought that sharks were more of an annoyance than a threat, especially around shipwrecks, oh boy are they a threat now!

Watching my friend scream in terror as he is chomped by two sharks was a fun moment. I'm a terrible friend...

  • I think the shark spawn us ment to be like that ...

  • I don't see a problem really. It's temporary and part of the new update.
Guess people who try boarding other ships by jumping into the water will think twice before doing it now :p

  • I love it. The sound that comes when they suddenly decide to swim deep is crazy... like something else has scared them off.

  • I think and hope the shark thing is only temporary. They are definitely out in full force since the last update. It can make for both a hilarious and frustrating time when you see a gang of sharks on you after being in the water for a couple seconds.

  • I'm counting on it to be temporary. Let's be honest here, the idea is to signify a big incoming event. This time it's whatever the sea has hidden from us and is currently awakening. The sharks are just a sign of things to come. It might be frustrating, but you've got to admit it makes the sea feel a bit more alive that things are responding as they should lore-wise.

  • Sounds like parking your ship close to the shore or at the pier is now a more important part.
Having a higher risk combined with less loot in shipwreckes sounds like a bit drastic change, but i haven't tested the new version yet.
Hopefully my Internet gets fixed up soon so i can feed those sharks a little snack (aka gunpowder barrel).

Smile, you son of a ...

  • @sirliborius Hmm, I'd have to check the shipwrecks. I'll do that later today. Didn't check them last night.

  • I don't mind the extra threat but it's lame and lazy on Rare's part to just think, 'oh we know, let's just spawn loads of sharks in the water.'

Tbh they are showing themselves as a bit of a disorganised company, unable the think about what the game would need, eg - handing over items, and then when implementing them removing core content like washed up items/quests.
It took them a few weeks to make up for that lost content by making books give increased numbers of quests. Surely that should have been a thing in the first place?!

It all just feels a little simplistic and the extra spawning of sharks (without reducing their strength) adds to that lack of balance.

I don't know, the game just feels messy at the moment and Rare are reactive rather than proactive. The lore idea is proactive and ties in well with the Hungering Deep but I think their implementation technique will lose more people than they'll gain.....for the umpteenth time since the game actually released.

  • Get bbetter

  • I don't know how game mechanics work but common sense says, if you lose other content like washed up items then add more sharks, then something is not balanced.
