How I'm hoping pets get done

  • There's eventually going to be an update for microtransactions where we can buy pets. But why would I want the same black cat as everyone else?

Here's an idea. They already have a premade infinite pirate generator, and you think they can come up with infinite variations on HUMAN bodies? Let's talk about just cats alone.
From coat color, tail size, coat thickness/thinness, overall size, stripe patterns, spot patterns, scars, possibly missing limbs/eyes/ears, ear shapes, mange, colors of individual parts like maybe nose coloration, facial structure, body structure, limp.

Topping that, they could have any number of pets. Cats, dogs, rats, falcons, parakeets, monkeys, Opossums, pigs (that'd be awkward for the other pigs) lizards of all kinds, hamsters, fish tanks, turtle/tortises, could even add habitats in captain's quarters or elsewhere on the ship.

    So here's what I'd hope they'd do.

Obviously, they would all be microtransaction based, but does that HAVE to be through the microsoft store? What if, instead, there was another store on a new outpost in an expansion, that is the pet store. When you get there, you purchase the basic architecture of the animal (cat, dog, velociraptor, whatever) and you're led into a back room with something LIKE the infinite pirate generator, but instead of pirates in a circle with a puff of green smoke, it's someone bringing out a bunch of kennels or bird cages or fish bowls or whatever, with blankets over them, or maybe the lights go off and you see eyes roll in, then the lights come on to reveal the animals or maybe it's a bunch of cat trees and they just walk the hell away whatever, but it's basically the infinite pet generator.
infinite cat generator, infinite cat generator, infinite whatever generator.
And you can perhaps select for specific traits you'd like but let's be honest that's not how pet adoption works and you get what you get. Possibly the process of elimination we had with IPG.

But that's how I hope they do it. Merp.

  • @filthee-mudblud Please no, the infinite pirate generator was a bad Idea the first time, some people like to customize things. Give us more customization not more RNG, I dont want a cat lootbox/slot machine.

  • @gem-pheenix
I might agree to disagree on the IPG. I quite liked the concept, and I'm happy with the pirate I chose. I was also happy with the one I chose for the Beta, and it was a small loss to not have the option to keep that one, but I have no complaints and rather I was happy with the system. I didn't have to jerk around with any sliders, we don't have 20,000 stupid "look I made the joker in Sea of Thieves" people running around, as we WOULD.

  • I'd love an Infinite Pet Generator!

  • Topping that, as I listed earlier, I'd love to have more than just cats and parrots. There's a massive list of possible pets you can have, conventional and unconventional. I mean...
    Possums
    rabbits
    hedgehogs
    guinea pigs
    falcons
    owls
    raccoons
    rats
    iguanas
    chameleons
    tortises
fish of any number of kinds
    otters
    doves
    crows
there's a million types of dog, and a long history of work dogs on ships anyway
    there's different kinds of monkey/ape/lemur
tbh possibilities are endless, but I'd like a cat, a rat, a crow or a raccoon just based on I think it'd look good with my pirate.

  • @Filthee-Mudblud Love this idea! I would love if they had a proper release of Pets that made them a core part of the game - Pirate-y pets were always a big part of pirate lore, I would love to see a content update focusing on them being more than just aesthetic purchases!

I wish, but we know they won't do that. It would break their promise of never having any monetization that provides an edge over other players. For that reason, I won't be bothered by pets not being able to pilfer or search or anything simply because I know it's just a small, but slippery slope from there to "now, for $2.99, you can purchase a double-barrelled shotgun! Good news, everyone! it's an insta-kill!"

  • I mean the small fix for that is having less-fancy pets that serve the same function for in-game gold, but I mean c'mon, now! lol

  • Actually, another couple things I'm hoping for are

    • The bare-architecture of the pets you purchased (like 'cat,' not specifically the cat you purchased, just that it IS a cat) stay with you even after deleting your pirate, since you paid real-world money for it

    • we eventually gain the ability to transfer ownership of, and/or gift purchased stuff among players, but pets I'd hope would be the exact pet you had, so you could transfer your pet to someone else at some point and the same pet would be following that person around afterwards.

  • I'm sure they will use an in-game store for microtransaction stuff. Built in stores has been a feature of Xbox live for a long long time now.

  • @filthee-mudblud using sliders is a choice not mandatory, the could have used the IPG to generate random presets so no one had the same looking base pirate if they didn't care to use the sliders, And for the people that do want to use the sliders the option is there, if they wanted to keep the created characters on theme without having a hundred jokers runnign around that's just as easy to do by NOT adding full face paint with joker options, It's not like it'd be that hard to give customization without letting people create monsters or stupid stuff.

  • @lord-sphinktus Yeah, I'm just hoping there's an actual building to go to. I like the immersion of this game, and it would help to keep that immersion intact. Kind of like to make it feel like "I am in this world, now. This cat is part of that world."

But.. but.. I want a cat lootbox slot machine.

  • I'd like to have a parrot that actually repeat what i say the most, with a small parrot voice.

Good in theory, but I'm imagining some child with a parrot shouting racial and homophobic slurs in even squeakier parrot voice

  • I'd pay a little extra for 'cursed' pets
Skeletal or half-decayed or glowy ... something along those lines.

  • I want to shoot over cats that will kill all their captured animals.

  • I want my ingame gold going to a random lootboxs that have a variety of pet rarities. Gimmicky addictive gambling.

ehhhh any gambling I want to happen between players.
Like bets on games of dice or checkers or the like

  • @filthee-mudblud than you shouldn't want a random pet generator.

Okay, now that comment deserves an eyeroll

To say those two have a logical link is a stretch that could break a Yoga instructor.

  • @filthee-mudblud They do man, if I'm paying for something I don't want it to be random because that means I am basically gambling. Thats what's started the whole thing about regulating loot boxes in case you missed it.

  • @filthee-mudblud dogs

    yes....dogs, most definitely

  • @filthee-mudblud did they mention about adding them soon?

    Came to agree.

I'd love in-game gold bought lootboxs for pet commons/rarities with a buy option for rarities. I say this because microtransactuins are coming regardless, why not have it be done right?

I'd say the difference is you KNOW you're getting a dog. And you STILL get to choose what dog you want. Hell, if you wanted to sit and cycle through dogs for a good week straight, you could do that. And you would get the dog you want, or probably scroll right on past a multitude of amazing dogs. But still. You're choosing. That's not gambling.
Now, Fortnite offering for you to buy a 'llama' that assigns you a trap and you just get what you get
I can accept THAT is gambling, as you have no control over the outcome.
But this? This isn't gambling. You have control over what you're getting.
Hell, they could boil it down to whatever BREED of dog and even color of coat if you're that snippy about it. But the random gen could be based on idk does the dog have scars? does the dog have a missing leg? a dog with a peg leg might be cool. Does the dog have spots? stripes? how bushy is its tail?
Jesus C****t, dude, you're the one choosing.

  • @roughleech03117 said in How I'm hoping pets get done:

Oh I have no idea. I'm just about 90% sure they're gonna have it eventually. All the pirate lore about parrots on shoulders, there's no way they aren't gonna have it. So it's an eventuality. They gotta further monetize it somehow.

  • @filthee-mudblud The point is, why bother forcing someone who wants a specific kind of dog to sit through and cycle through something for a week when it would be just as easy to let them fine tune the dog's looks after selecting one of the random templates.

Like would it be that hard to say that they pick a dog that has a decent base design but they want it to look more rough and tumble so you can add scars to it or make it blind in one eye or whatever. Why does it have to be purely random why not give the player some control over the final look of these avatars and things.

  • @gem-pheenix
    Ok
    so compromise
    a groomer

  • @filthee-mudblud That'd be good. I just want character customization man. I'm so sick of all this random BS in games. I'd spend gold or even real money for it if I had to, the art style of this game is awesome and I'd love to see what kinda cool looking character I can make if I had full access to all the different features they have loaded into the IPG which they could attach a slider menu to, If you've ever played older MMO's you know what I mean, where they have preset features assigned to notches on a slider, or rather than a slider you pick like. Nose 1, Eyes 3, chin 5 etc. etc.

I think that using the IPG to generate random default templates for people to edit themselves if they wanted to would have been an incredible idea that way don't have a bunch of default clones. But just the IPG by itself feels kinda eh.. like you either pick an avatar you don't really like, or you settle with something that's 'good enough' or you get super lucky and get your perfect favorite avatar. It just dosn't feel like good game design.

    /endrant sorry.

  • @gem-pheenix
I suppose that's a good compromise. I will admit, I wish the IPG didn't take place in such a poorly lit room. I mean, there's probably quite a few people who loved their pirate before seeing them in sunlight and going "....oh"
But personally I loved the system because I knew not only that my character would definitely fit within this world, but that NOBODY had a character that could even potentially look the same.

  • I want a green parrot. Not too fat, not too weird, just a normal green parrot.

  • I just want to spam diseased cats onto your ship that run around and infect everything.

  • @filthee-mudblud I've actually seen lots of pirates that look like mine, and or look like my friends pirates, when you've got a random generator using pre-set features, you're still going to get look-alike or similar pirates.
