There's eventually going to be an update for microtransactions where we can buy pets. But why would I want the same black cat as everyone else?
Here's an idea. They already have a premade infinite pirate generator, and you think they can come up with infinite variations on HUMAN bodies? Let's talk about just cats alone.
From coat color, tail size, coat thickness/thinness, overall size, stripe patterns, spot patterns, scars, possibly missing limbs/eyes/ears, ear shapes, mange, colors of individual parts like maybe nose coloration, facial structure, body structure, limp.
Topping that, they could have any number of pets. Cats, dogs, rats, falcons, parakeets, monkeys, Opossums, pigs (that'd be awkward for the other pigs) lizards of all kinds, hamsters, fish tanks, turtle/tortises, could even add habitats in captain's quarters or elsewhere on the ship.
So here's what I'd hope they'd do.
Obviously, they would all be microtransaction based, but does that HAVE to be through the microsoft store? What if, instead, there was another store on a new outpost in an expansion, that is the pet store. When you get there, you purchase the basic architecture of the animal (cat, dog, velociraptor, whatever) and you're led into a back room with something LIKE the infinite pirate generator, but instead of pirates in a circle with a puff of green smoke, it's someone bringing out a bunch of kennels or bird cages or fish bowls or whatever, with blankets over them, or maybe the lights go off and you see eyes roll in, then the lights come on to reveal the animals or maybe it's a bunch of cat trees and they just walk the hell away whatever, but it's basically the infinite pet generator.
infinite cat generator, infinite cat generator, infinite whatever generator.
And you can perhaps select for specific traits you'd like but let's be honest that's not how pet adoption works and you get what you get. Possibly the process of elimination we had with IPG.
But that's how I hope they do it. Merp.
