Mouse settings, improvements and fixes.

  • Hello there,

Just recently got back to this game and there have been a lot of improvements overall since the last time I played in 2021 but there are still some items that still need addressing.

The first thing would be that this game has issues with any mouse running over 250Hz polling, currently, if you play at any polling rate above that (e.g. 1000Hz) the game will drop packets and this will result in an uneven motion.

As far as I am aware this has been present in the game since the launch and I would really like to see this fixed.

Secondly, since this game started out as a UWP game I understand that it uses an input wrapper to convert from direct input to Xinput so implementing a raw input option might not be easy to do.

What could easily be done is expose the x and y sensitivity scales and then add more granularity to the mouse sensitivity slider, add 3 decimal sensitivity options (e.g. instead of being stuck with 1.1 you could do 1.173) to give players the ability to better match their preferred sensitivity.

Essentially what I am asking is having two multiplier options for mouse sensitivity as opposed to the barebones one currently in the game.

It was really nice to see separate sliders for all the weapons in the game, I would add a slider for the spyglass since on low DPI settings you will barely be able to move this to look around.

Feel free to share your thoughts on this and mention anything else that might be worth looking at.

    Cheers,

    RVB

  • Did further testing and there's significant negative mouse acceleration ( the mouse slows down on fast flicks) that results in the above-mentioned uneven motion when running at 1000Hz polling.

I would have expected more people to be up in arms about this, was the negative acceleration issue already a known issue? Or is it just that people don't bother playing with MnK in this game?

  • I've been playing with 1000Hz polling for 5 years and have never noticed an issue with uneven motion.

Hi, thank you for the reply, try doing the following test:

Start your game and then join a server with your usual mouse settings, get a feel for the sensitivity, minimize your game, and then go to your mouse app and switch the polling rate to 250Hz or below that, now switch back to the game.

You will notice that when you are on 1000Hz you will perceive your mouse to be on a significantly lower sensitivity than on 250Hz. This is happening because the game is not registering all the input coming from your mouse at 1000Hz but is registering all input at 250Hz or lower.

The problem is that by running at 1000Hz you are exposed to random packet drops that make aiming inconsistent.

    Hope this helped.

  • I have opened a support ticket and requested a fix for the mouse polling issue if anyone was interested in this.

Also made a separate feature request as presented here but the support staff member advised that I should post about it in this Feedback section since it is being monitored by devs.

Here's hoping for the best, still waiting to see if anyone else tested this out on their PC to corroborate my findings.

  • Bump to keep this alive, because yes, it is a very real and very annoying issue. This is a PC game. Most PC players are going to use a mouse. A PC game allowing mouse input shouldn't cap mouse input at a 250Hz polling rate. Kinda embarrassing that this is still an issue.

Thank you for the reply, I am still finding the overall lack of interest in this subject from the forums and Rare to be rather surprising.

As an update on the polling issue, the support ticket that was opened on the 12th was closed five days later on the 17th with no actual resolution and the unverifiable statement that the "report remains active in our internal systems".

The reason I say this is an unverifiable statement is that I have no means to track any progress regarding the report and I also do not have a way to reopen the ticket to request an update or provide additional information.

I am most certainly not the first person to have noticed and reported the polling issue and combining this with the fact that this problem has been in the game from launch I am very skeptical about this ever getting addressed.

I guess I should not be so surprised considering it took Rare 5 years to actually have a brightness setting added, no doubt pondering for that entire period whether a player making his screen slightly brighter would corrupt the "artistic integrity" of their game.

  • Does this possibly affect keyboard polling rate as well?

  • Here's another bump I play at 8000 polling and 165 FPS with a beefy rig that runs on an 11th Gen i5 OC and an RTX 4080 Sea of Thieves runs less than 30% CPU and GPU and my RAM is at 14GB of 64GB. At above 250 polling, can confirm my 8000 is entirely unplayable unless I dip polling below 250.

Same here! I can start the game with 1000 polling, play for like 30 mins then suddenly the game starts stuttering so badly and the only fix is lower polling to 250/125 and the stuttering immediately disappears...
