New addition: Guild Seas

  • This has probably been discussed before, but the Safer Seas update was kind of disappointing to me. I got really excited when I saw the trailer where multiple guild ships were sailing together. I have a big friend group of 8 people who all play sea of thieves, and we all hoped that we could finally sail the seas with multiple ships without bothering other players with the addition of safer seas. Now, this turned out to be a dissapointment since safer seas only allows for a single ship.

What do you guys think about a whole new server mechanic where you can sail with only ships from your guilt? I do not care about any debuffs or reduced gold and reputation, I just want to play with more than three of my friends at once.

  • The usual suspects will hit you with the same old excuses. "Its just meant to be an extended tutorial." "Don't expect full game benefits in the cut down version." Etc.

But there are some things that don't make sense to not allow in safer seas such as your named ships and use of the Soverigns. Now your idea, in HIGH SEAS would be a huge game breaker and would attract all the wrong types of abuse, however in Safer Seas, there is no competition so nobody's experience would be ruined nor would the balance be compromised. Safer seas is the ONLY place such an idea could manifest, and i say why not? people want to play together, let them do it with multiple ships where they're not hurting anyone.

If someone has a problem with the concept because "The more features they get in safer seas the less meaning High Seas will have." or "Give them an inch and they want a mile." Then they can, for once, be ignored due to the nature of this novel idea being one that couldn't exist in High Seas anyway.

  • Custom Servers allow you to sail with multiple boats per server at the caveat of 0 gold/rep/commendation/milestone. Seems good for me of people want to launch with a larger crew size.

Otherwise if you have 2 galleons on a high seas server there is no risk of backstabbing when you are all friends and 2 galleys will just be able to bully anyone else.

My vote is a no here.

The point was that it wouldnt be a thing on High seas. Furthermore, zero reward is a little drastic when an concept like the safer seas 30% already exists and is by and large a fair measure.

  • @whitestag1992 They already said it in the OP. They don't care about gold etc and just want to play with friends. Custom Servers offer this and they offer 0 payout and can be fun. 0 payout is how it should be imo.

  • So in short, alliance server.

  • As previously made clear what is required here is an alliance server not just Safe Seas anymore. Well there are plenty of groups in Discord that offer that possibility already, just join one.

  • @burnbacon alliance server*
(*on safer seas, where you earn 30% of the gold)

But there are some things that don't make sense to not allow in safer seas such as your named ships and use of the Soverigns.

Rare decided that Captaincy is a High Sea's thing, so everything to do with captaincy went with it.

Milestones counting in high seas, means that your ship statistics are things you have earnt in the face of danger, and also mean that Rare didn't have to go through and decide which of those were allowed to be cheesed in safer seas and which didn't have to be.

Captaincy Books gain value over time, and were intended to make "every experienced ship worth sinking" if they had been playing on the server doing activity, so it makes sense why Rare consider Captaincy to be a high seas thing.

The Sovereign perk, and naming ships, I'd be happy with safer seas having, mainly in the name of accessibility for people with disabilities when selling loot.
But it does seem like a bit of work for Rare to make the entire frontend work with naming ships and splitting captaincy up, and doesn't make sense Lore wise, when the initial goal of Sovereigns was to provide a perk so good that it would be irresistible, so that people didn't just decide to charter a ship instead to avoid the book bonus.

Basically, for a few small reasons, it makes sense that Captaincy isn't in Safer Seas, because it would just take too much engineering time and effort to rework captaincy so that people would be happy with it.

And considering that Captaincy originally blew a bunch of time in the season budget to get across the line, it's probably a HUGE MESS under the hood to try and make some stuff work in safer seas, and others not.

My understanding is that creating a custom server is currently restricted to SoT's partnered content creators.
Unless you are proposing that Custom Servers be released to the public.

That was the plan for them years ago and then it kinda just sputtered off. But yes, I'd love for them to release for everyone, they are fun for events and such.
