Dark Adventurer Sails

  • I recently saw on the sea of thieves Instagram that the dark adventurer sails are no longer angled and are now square like the all the other sails. I'm not sure if people had been complaining or not but I loved having these sails as they were, I think it was rewarding people who played enough to become pirate legend, and earn 8 million gold. But now that they're normal I feel like I got cheated out of my 8 million and my time because people may have been upset by a slight advantage to ship combat. I especially don't understand implementing this right around the same time that the safer seas are available, meaning those who might be upset about an advantage like this don't even have to go into these fights. Overall I'm just hoping to get these sails back to the way they were because I really enjoyed them and it made the game that much nicer, not even combat but just to be able to see a little more as a reward for playing for so long.

    Thanks

  • Unfortunately, the reason they fixed the sails was because of the advantage you describe.

  • Once they make it official as a stance there ain't any going back.

    Only moving forward.

  • TBH, I didn't even notice the change to thriving rose sails lol.

  • None of the other DA items give the player a tactical advantage and they also cost 8.mil each..
That specific sail cut needed to go. Im sorry you feel you wasted 8.mil.. complain to Rare, they might reward you with the invaluable "Voyage of Restitution"

They outta make every sail cut ( cept DA ) available for any sail..
    More customizing the better.

  • Pssst, ill let you in on a little known trick but don't tell anyone, if you raise your sail a couple inches it will curl and you can see just fine

  • You got cheated out of 8 million yet you had several years of use before they got changed?

I spent 70 million on Trinkets before the price got nerfed barely six months later.

  • @CardboardPilot2
I fully agree with your comment on the Dark Adventurer sails. They were beautifull and cost a lot, but the way they look after the big ingame upgrade makes no sence. I am dissapointed and really hope that the developer team can put it back to the former layout.

  • Hot take, they actually look better now. They looked awful before on the Sloop. They fit the rigging properly and no longer cause arguments among poor helms who can't be bothered to get off the wheel.

  • In terms of the "look", they could probably tweak that and have the fill-in be black instead of silver, giving the bottom a similar pointed vibe as before. I could get behind that change.

In terms of actual shape, however, nope that's not coming back. It was an advantage, though many swore it wasn't until the fix was announced. Then, suddenly, they're all up in arms over losing their advantage.

They're still a prestige symbol, especially combined with the rest of the DA set.

For those currently using Kraken, Ghost, and similar sails, I'm sure they'll be looked at next, so don't get too used to their cut.

  • @antilla1 I hope they don't revert back to the old design and as a result we see a wider variety of sail designs on the seas.

I have assisted on the Race of Legends streams and the Dark Adventurer sails were their only banned sail because of the slight vision advantage it gave to helm.

  • More variety of sails on the sea is a positive. You generally found that the most competitive players got to the point where they didn't need da sails as a crutch. No one is owed any money or reparation, you used them. They've been changed.
This brings cosmetics back in line with the original intent of no advantages, there is still some discrepancy out there but this was the biggest outlier

  • @pithyrumble the sloop is where is where the DA sails shined the most giving you a ton of view

That is the one example where I can see there was an actual advantage. Combat not so much.

Yea, like their stance on pve servers.

If you bought them for the unintended advantage; That's your fault.
The devs have said, for years, that no cosmetics should be pay-to-win.

And Safer Seas is so watered down that saying 'Play a completely gimped version of the game if you don't like the unintended advantage' is not really valid.

I'm talking more about something like sails, exploits, things they weren't saying anything about and then made a decision about. They aren't gonna undo decisions they make on that kind of stuff. They already factor in people not liking the decision.

Safer seas is just evolving the game while keeping it in line with risk/reward (because of the restrictions) while still making it clear that they are still prioritizing high seas.

How do you feel cheated? You earned the gold and bought the sails. What was cheated from you? Advantage?

  • You literally say that it was "slight advantage", but you also admit you have used them for this "slight advantage" and spend your 8 mils. for it.
The overall texture has not been changed, so it seems this "slight advantage" was the only major point to buy them.
And that proves the point why they were changed.

I like the game tries to provide the same options for everyone regardless their playtime. Only difference should be skill and experience (assuming same hardware).

Purchased items are not supposed to give an advantage.

If you bought the sails for the art, it is still there.

If you bought the sails for the advantage, the inevitable day of reckoning has arrived.

  • Is there a list or announcement that tells which sails in addition to DA got changed?

  • @foambreaker https://www.seaofthieves.com/release-notes/2.9.2

"The following sails have been updated: Dark Adventurers, Lunar Festival (and Collector’s), Kraken, Venomous Kraken, Ghost, Guardian Ghost, Magpie’s Glory, Nightshine Parrot, Ghost Captain, Blighted (and Collector’s), Shrouded Ghost Hunter (and Collector’s), Thriving Wild Rose, Sea of Champions, Collector’s Dark Warsmith."

Wow, pretty ballsy to update the ones people paid RL cash for!

No kidding... I'm in that boat... real world money spent, and they change the cosmetic... won't offer a refund. Advantage or not, they sold it one way, then changed how it looks...offer the ancient coins back if we no longer like how it looks and we'll buy something else.

  • Rares bad take is that people bought them for prestige value of owning something expensive instead for the shape advantage. They know this is a straight up lie but its the PR excuse they are running with. Honestly after all this time and them neglecting to add favorites to any cosmetic chests and only finally giving us the ability to save ship cosmetic sets via captaincy they really should just let us refund cosmetics at a loss at will. I would probably sell back 90% of my cosmetics at this point. My goals in the game have shifted from wanting to collect 100% of cosmetics since they were never adding new ones outside of bi-weekly update doubloon stuff to now finally adding new cosmetics and the emporium etc so now I find myself no longer caring about collecting all the things and collection chest overflowing with ugly cosmetics I no longer want and regret purchasing.

I really don't think it would be asking a lot to have a sell back feature and it would solve any debates over a significant cosmetic change such as this.

@foambreaker Seems more like they either forgot to change those cosmetics or only made very slight changes to them compared to the DA sails since those were the more commonly abused one. Though once Kraken becomes the most common then they would surely give all the kraken sails the inky kraken treatment. Inky kraken set was one I was looking forward to a lot just to have the sails release without the big rips in them.

  • I posted multiple times on this topic, asking for a refund for the sails. I was told no

  • @otherfanboy the sloop is the main one you could see under regardless and needed the least furl of sails with others

A week after I bought the crimson crypt cannon flare it was nerfed so there was precedent

  • It's just humiliation, i spend a loooot of time for saving 8kk gold for this sails, bought it like half year ago and did a break for game, and now i'm back for game and just see i throw my money into the void
I didn’t even have time to sail and enjoy them

  • @hiradc ahh didn't know they changed that one

  • I don't think it was that people were complaining about the sails. I'm sure there were definitely were but I think it was because Rare noticed their mistake. From the beginning, Rare have always had the "tools not rules" system. Giving everyone in the game the same tools and then it's up to them how they use them. The DA sails are 8mil gold, exclusive to PL and offer a significant advantage in both sailing and combat. Not something much of the player base would be able to have access to. So I think it was less about keeping those that complained happy and more about levelling the playing field.
