Constant video driver crash/reset while playing.

  • Owned the game for almost a week and starting 2-3 days ago the game(and everything else on my pc) freezes but I can still hear audio, then I get a white pop-up window telling my my video driver crashed and has reset, then the game crashes to desktop or I have to force close it, everything else unfreezes. Event Viewer(System) shows a 4101 event ID every time this happens, stating amdkmdap has stopped responding and was restarted successfully. Intel I7 5820K, 16GB DDR4, XFX Double D R9 280(non-x) Black Edition, Samsung Evo 500gb SSD, Asus x99-a motherboard.

I tried to create a support ticket but after I choose the topic of the ticket I'm broguht to my requests page to view open and historic tickets but can't start a new one...on two different browsers.

I've done a clean video card driver sweep and install of the latest version. I've done at least 1 hour of furmark stress testing on my video card and have no issues, max temp reached was 68c which is well below problematic. I ran a series of memtest86 passes and determined one of my four memory modules was faulty so I'm down to just a pair of modules(probably solved my rare memory related blue screen issue). My bios was out of date by a couple years so I updated that. Windows is completely up to date, all drivers at their latest versions. I've disabled shader cache in the amd radeon software, I've lowered lighting down to cursed, I've created a TdrDelay key in regedit and set it to 8 and all that did was delay the inevitable crash to desktop after the freeze for 8 seconds instead of 1-2 seconds. I cleaned sweeped video driver again and tried older version, then again for latest optional version, then again back to the latest stable version.

The problem is not my computer, it is the game or some sort of incompatibility/issue between the game and the driver. Can I get some support on this?

  • Something I would suggest, would be to try other UWP Games (the other Microsoft Game Pass titles) or Unreal Engine 4 Games (such-as Fortnite, PUBG, etc.) to figure out if the issue is with UWP, UE4 or is entirely Unique to Sea of Thieves.

I've personally not had any issues with Sea of Thieves on the Adrenalin 2019 (18.12.x) Driver but I have had multiple issues with any Epic Store (Launcher) Games like Fortnite that cause a Frowny Face of Doom OS Crash.

It's something to do with how the Driver and Epic Store are interacting., as it is exclusive to this combination but figuring out which is strictly in error is less easy.

I know a rollback does resolve the issue; which sure, could point to a Driver issue... but the exclusivity of said issue again suggests otherwise, as you'd expect it to be more universal.

What I'd suggest is to Roll-Back the Driver to a previous Recommended, such-as 18.11 / 18.10 to see if that resolves the issue.

Then just let AMD and Rare know., because there are far more limited tools for us (as Consumers) to pin down the more precise causes for issues.

  • @leyvin I have a ton of time in to PUBG and still play it somewhat regularly so I don't think UE4 is an issue. I have hundreds of hours in to ARK on this video card(but different cpu/mb/ram). I just got this cpu/mb/ram combo a few months ago.

I did a clean sweep of SoT and reinstalled it, will play tomorrow after work and see if that resolves the issue. The first few days I had the game I played for hours and hours and didn't have a crash, not sure what changed to start the crashing. If it crashes after the clean reinstall I'll try some other UWP games. This is the first game to have problems with my card, and the first game/anything I've used from the MS app store...so I'm leaning towards the game or Microsoft.

Edit: I don't have the ms/xbox game pass, by the way. I do have the annual xbox gold membership since I have a one x I play on sometimes. Can I use that gold to play one of the other UWP games(it's the same account I use for my PC xbox app)? If not I definitely don't want to throw any money at trying to solve this issue unless it's for an nvidia card.

  • I have this exact same issue. In fact, happened to me right at the beginning of my guilded goldhoarders quests during shrouded spoils. Submitted a ticket but the only support that I got was "reinstall the game". Oh gee, thanks.

It's been a bumpy ride with this game. It has a completely unique feel, is beautiful, and has a great air of adventure, but repetitive gameloop and constant crashes are really growing tiresome.

  • @johnnydotexe The simplest way (I've found with my R9 280X, latest drivers) to resolve this is to change your graphics settings (particularly texture and/or shadow detail) to less than optimal for the system you have.
Yes, it loses a bit of the eye-candy, but I haven't had a crash since and the fps increase sort of makes up for it.
I also tried the TdrDelay 'bodge' but it didn't help either, game would run fine for between a half hour and 2 hours before crashing - but only had one crash (related to a Windows Update demanding to be installed) in over 2 months now.
    Hope this helps.

  • @johnnydotexe I don't have a solution for you unfortunately but I can add some data. I am experiencing exactly the same problem with Windows 10 locking up. I have a Nvidia card (RTX 2080) and I have only experienced the issue in SOT. I have only had the issue yesterday (it occurred several times) but that is the first time I have played games since last weekend when Windows 10 updated to version 1809. I have tried other games (specifically Dota 2 and Northgard) and the problem was not experienced when playing either of them (for a longer period of time than playing SOT). I have tried do a clean reinstall of the driver and have not yet had a chance to re-try SOT, but hoping that it will have fixed the issue, as the only thing that had changed in my system was Windows 10 updating.

  • I'd been having frequent crashes as well right from the beginning, a fresh install of the game on a new install of Windows 10. I had the game installed on my D: drive. When I got an SSD, migrated my Windows 10 install and reinstalled the game onto the SSD(which was now my main drive with Windows) , I played the game for several hours without a single crash. I decided this may have fixed the issues so I tried to bump graphic settings back towards rare and again with the crashes. I've yet to get a chance to play again with the video settings where I'd had them previously.

Just curious how many of these issues may be linked to being installed on a secondary drive as another friend was having the same problem and his game was also installed on a secondary drive. Will update when I get a chance to try with my previous video settings on the main drive.

  • @johnnydotexe I've had this same issue a number of times. I updated all of my drivers and that seemed to fix it, however it just crashed right now and I lost a lot of loot. Are there any other solutions?

  • I'm getting the same crashes. I'm running with an "XFX Radeon HD 7870 Double D (on latest drivers)" with an "AMD fx 4300 black quad-core", "8GB DDR3 ram in dual channel". On an "Asus M5 A78L-M USB 3" mobo.

For me, it happens once or twice on a Sloop in about 2 hours. Seems to be more frequent on a Brig, about 5-6 times per 2-hour session.

On a Gallion it tends to crash every 10 mins.

Running Cursed, Cursed, Cursed rare and Legendary settings at 900p fullscreen. I hit 60 FPS on average and the game shows no signs of trouble before locking up and crashing saying my video driver has crashed and has been reset.

I've heard it might be something to do with DX12 on Radeon cards but as far as I can see there's no way to roll it back to DX11 in game.

Personally, own the game, paid full price for it so i'm not happy. My hardware isn't the best but still falls under the requirements. I've also sent a ticket to get no response at all. This has been happening since I got the game and the issue persists upon a re-install of the game, Windows 10, and both.

Lastly. I play other games on the same version of UE4 and DX12 and they run flawlessly. I believe this is a SoT exclusive problem that really needs to be addressed. Lost a lot of loot because of this.

  • Yeah same problem. Now you guys mention it, I did only start having problems after I upped the video-settings. Imma try just running it at 60 fps.

  • Same exact issue, on an R9 280X. Rare's support gave me helpful tips such as checking my router's port settings, before telling me to take it up with AMD. Not impressed at all. The last time I played SoT, I crashed 10 times in about 3 hours, fortunately I've had patient crews.

I'll try lowering my settings even further, but I'm still skeptical.

  • I had a major issue with my rx vega 64 crashing in SoT, however I came across a forum post which told me to downclock my GPU ram to 3000mhz within BIOS. Did this, and now I don't crash at all :) maybe something you guys can try.

  • Same problem here

  • Exactly same issue... crashing like 10 times in 2 hours. R9280x is the video card. 20 Gigs of RAM, SSD... etc.
Latest driver for the video crd, nothing changes...
    What should I try?

  • I have been happening this issue too and I think I fixed it for me. Turn off Msi Afterburner if you have it
