Please Give The Mighty Kraken A Proper Body!

  • The Mythical Kraken, is a legendary sea monster of giant size with a fearsome appearance. Painted into the Sea of Thieves lore on cavern walls and rocks throughout the world. Isn't it?
That was until we peered through the murky waters and were hugely disappointed that it was simply a bunch of not so fearsome, random tentacles.
Conker's Great Mighty Poo puts our once thought to be mighty Kraken to shame in my opinion.
Can we please give the Kraken a proper body, even if it only pokes a watchful eye out of the water from time to time? I just feel that this legendary sea monster deserves a little more love. It would be both absolutely horrifying and wonderful for all of our fellow swashbucklers to see the Kraken lift a pirate off of a ship and toss him into it's gaping maw or be able to pepper it with harpoons under the water, only to meet the same fate.
I heard a lot of defense in the community, that this would create server issues. I do not agree at all. Plenty of games have hundreds of NPCs coexisting in servers that are very much more heavily populated than the player limited Sea of Thieves servers. I'm certain the server could handle a Kraken with a properly rendered body. But what do I know?
I love this game and will continue the road to pirate legend, but the experience has been dulled due to what seemed to me like a potentially amazing Kraken that was dropped because the development team didn't take the time to complete the Kraken and instead hid the fact under murky waters.

Rare, can we honor our mighty Kraken with an actual body, pretty please?

  • Thats been said a long time ago that its coming

  • Its not often you have a memorable tale from playing with randoms, but thats exactly what just happened to me, we were voyaging for an hour or 2, must have amassed around 30 items of treasure from shipwrecks and such, last island before the outpost has a storm around it, then she appears, the mighty kraken, i have never faced her in a storm but she destroyed us, we lost everything, the turbulent seas caused by the storm revealed the ugly nature of the beast before us, we could easily see that it was just tentacles popping out the water, disembodied, floating in nothingness. Very jarring. She needs a body!!

Please Give The Mighty Kraken A Proper Body!

they stopped making sea of thieves there because xbox could not take anymore

  • @awesomechad888 Was it actually confirmed? I haven't seen any developers address this at all. Perhaps you could share a link to this information?

  • @solidsnakemig My first encounter with Karen was with 2 other friends in the heart of a storm right near a bunch of rocks so we couldn't escape lol. Fortunately we didn't have much on board, though we were lacking cannon balls...We met a watery grave lol. It was a fun encounter....But the storm raging and her flailing ended us lol

  • enjoy as this is all you get on console

  • @cattaleyaathena Thanks very much for that! Haha
ArrrRrrr! Now there be thee mighty Kraken!

  • I just put two and two together that even the, "Buy Now" option on the upper right hand corner of the screen covers up where the Kraken's body should be. Perhaps it wasn't meant to be. ArrRrrr...

  • Mighty? Ive fought him 6 times now. Haven't died once and he maybe put... two holes total in our ship. Its the kraken, I should be terrified to fight him, not annoyed......

  • @deadlock-ganj Agreed, totally! Haha

  • @solidsnakemig best memory is 6 of us in 3 matching sloops, at a skull fort, being grieved by some lame galley crew, they said they'll keep coming back to harass us till we give up. We kicked their a*s 3 times n sank em. 4th trip to us we kill boss, and was gonna run with key and split up 3 ways. Then right at the fort, the kraken grabbed them. Close enuff that we could hear them cussing. So we loaded up while laughing and sailed by taunting them. I yelled "ahhh you a*s hats didn't know we could summon the kraken did u?" So im waiting for a post about some cheaters that can spawn the kraken haha.

  • @johnny-vain Please post video of this if you have it. HAhaha Tis an amazing tale sir.

  • What if the Kraken is just lazy?

It's so big that it sits down its body is on the Sea floor...but its tentacles are 5 miles long, so the lazy scuurve daaag just does his fishing from his Kraken Sofa from down there, in the drink.

  • @burtlangoustine Avast...he'd have to have detachable tentacles then, since they're clearly solitary tentacles that are flat on the bottom. That's the least laziest way to make the Kraken more believably embodied though. lol

  • 0_1524164628670_Kraken.jpg
Is this not a hint of what the Kraken should actually look like?
Also, is that not a rowboat or canoe underneath the Kraken? lol

  • How about give the mighty Kraken a slightly higher encounter rate? Have had this game since release and not once have i encountered it. Or even implement something into the game?

Cursed Chests or Skulls that are worth a lot, but the Kraken encounter chance on the player is a lot more higher then the others.

  • kraken is a waste of time he gives nothing and after the first time he is just an annoyance that you want to swim away thats all , give loot from him maybe special skin % drop from him or inside a chest that you get from him

  • @mistoes Absolutely! Drop items for ship customization perhaps, for bragging rights that you've successfully subdued the Kraken. A figurehead and sails would be nice. A Kraken decorated Blunderbuss perhaps? A whole set, but random drop rates. Maybe a special item as mentioned somewhere I can't remember that extends lung capacity, enabling us to breathe under water for a longer period of time?

  • It could be more exciting, but I really don't see why it needs a body.

  • @mistoes I can imagine that's what it feels like after the first few encounters for sure. I believe there is a reward system like that on its way, so if I had a few encounters, i think the wait would be worth it for a reward system.

@DOSE-7 Love that idea. Like an organic rebreather!

  • I suggest a Kraken rework:
    • Make a new 3D model of the Kraken with full body.
    • It should behave differently when attacking a galleon or a sloop.
    • Should appear on open seas, it would not appear near the coast.
    • The attack where the Kraken grabs the ship should remain, but adapted with the new 3D model.
    • Rework the tentacle grab attack. It looks like the camera gets out of our character and gets closer to the tentacle's mouth. It should be more like this: The camera spins without getting out of place to look in the tentacle direction, and you see the tentacle approach to you and grab you.
    • When grabbed, a new animation should be done for pirates, right now they look like they are standing inside the tentacle's mouth.
    • Add a new attack where a tentacle hit the hull with a lot of strength creating numerous holes. Something like a whip hitting something.
    • Add a new attack where the tentacles grab the masts and tilts the ship to one side, making it difficult for pirates to walk on the surfaces. 45 degrees should be enough.
    • Make the inky water less dark so the new 3D model can be seen, but the water still deals damage to pirates swimming underwater.
    • The Kraken's head can take damage from gunpowder kegs, and that would make it release anything it grabbed with the tentacles, but the risk is that the explosion can create numerous holes to the hull.

  • @verminpup Because this is next gen gaming and it takes away from the ambience of the game. This isn't N64 anymore, where the console's programming capacity is hugely limited. Imagine if Bowser in Super Mario was only teeth and a mouth breathing fire, the T-Rex in Jurassic Park was just a robotic head popping out of the jungle and eating people, King Kong was a hand grabbing people and making ape noises. It's simply not the same.

  • @dose-7

Those examples do not really make justice to the idea here. It's not like its tentacles floating at sea attached to nothing. The water is blackened so that you can imagine the body under the water.

The look of the kraken remains a mystery, all that you see is tentacles reaching out take your ship into the depths.

I think it is perfectly fitting of many paintins, in fact I worry more about attempting to make a fitting and terrifying body, for a creature often only shown as tentacles reaching out.

I think it's perfectly fine as is, just needs gameplay adjustments to be a little scarier, without being frustrating.

  • @dragotech123 These are all great. Also, they should remove the ability for the tentacles to suck you into their grasp. It's ridiculous, like an Elephant trunk sucking up a peanut. Should be an actual grab animation. lol

  • @verminpup You are entitled to your opinion, that's yours and right on. My opinion it's introducing an incomplete creature and hiding it under darkened water effects. You said it yourself, "adjustments to be a little scarier." Tentacles are not scary. A completely rendered, menacing Kraken is. And what's there to be afraid of? The game is only about 9GB, how's that going to be affect the game negatively? They should have plenty of room to add a fully rendered, interactive body of the Kraken. Why would it be a bad thing to add the body? lol

What does the size of the game have to do with anything?

A full bodied Kraken wouldn't use the skeleton of any other in game NPCs or models, it would have to be built entirely from the ground up, modeled and animated in a way that is pretty, believable, and fun to interact with.

That is a huge task, regardless of "Room" to add a kraken body. It's simply not how videogames work.

I can totally understand the design and artistic direction they took, considering not only time/budget, but also mystery and the little gains that a body would actually bring.

What would you do? Go under water and stab the Kraken with your swords in a 3 hit combo? Does that actually sound fun? It's not like this game has submarines or cannons that shoot downward.

I think there are much more interesting ways in which the Kraken could be buffed and altered, at much lower cost.

And of course it's all opinions, and that is mine, and RARE's apparently!

  • @verminpup Is it a huge task? I'm certain there are plenty that agree with me that it would create a better ambience for the game to have included the body. We interact with ships underwater, we have ancient ruins in the water that we take time to explore. Hell, even the first addition to the game is titled, "The Hungering Deep." One would assume that will take us further into the depths of the ocean. I would absolutely be gung ho about diving into the water to take the Kraken head on, stabbing it in the face to save my crew and our hours of looted treasure. In my opinion, it is how games work. Look at Ark:Survival evolved. There are literally hundreds of Dino NPCs that have their own mechanics that 70+ players interact with at one time.
Rare could make it work and make it wonderful. They're legendary!

I don't want to argue the fact that this could be fun, as it's all preferences and depends on how RARE would implement it.

But, "is it a huge task" ? Of course it is! Massive!

  • I agree, the disembodied tentacles truly ruin the illusion of fighting the mythical Kraken. I wouldn't even mind if they made it appear that it was hiding the rest of its body in the sand, but to just have them floating there is immersion breaking.

  • @verminpup Well I wish it wasn't. lol Not here to argue either. Appreciate the input.

  • Of all video game creators, I believe that the RARE can handle this. The concept art of the body for the Kraken looked great. While we're at it, polish the game off with anchors and rowboats, animated monkeys and parrots on the islands, dolphins and whales in the ocean and I think this game would be flawless, no other additions besides the future DLC and pet marketplace. Love this game, Rare just needs to polish it up like the sparkly diamond that Sea of Thieves is.

  • @dose-7 said in Please Give The Mighty Kraken A Proper Body!:

Of all video game creators, I believe that the RARE can handle this.

they probably cut it for optimization on xbox consoles very common for assets content and features to be cut for consoles and the traditional loading screens

computers only support up to 128GB ram memory so it clearly wasn't there fault in the debate vs but you could blame the xbox one s etc

Memory Original and S model: 8 GB DDR3 (5 GB available to games)
X model: 12 GB GDDR5 (9 GB available to games)

if consoles share system memory with gpu you have roughly 2.5GB ram for video and 2.5GB for game client exe on xbox one s while the xbox one x has 4.5GB for each to divide up. also the hardware on the xbox one s is really weak when compared to the x and sea of thieves was sold supporting both?

  • @dose-7 said in Please Give The Mighty Kraken A Proper Body!:

You can't compare assets in a game to movie models/effects. They aren't dealing with real time rendering and resource management like they do in todays games. So, the "black ink" and disembodied tentacles might be due to controlling potential drops in FPS that might be notable to lower end systems. Or...it could be just incomplete.

That being said they did state the Kraken would evolve over time...which either means the way it interacts with a ship will improve(?) over that time, or the model itself would evolve as in becoming a complete model of a Kraken. We haven't received a really concise answer as to what evolve means to Rare.

Does the Kraken need to improve as far as the experience? Heck yes it does. It needs to be a far more violent/frenetic confrontation, lurching the ship, smashing into it, grabbing the masts, sliding across the hull and grabbing a crewmember, etc.

We have to wait and see what they intend. These current tentacles may be more placeholders for physics driven tentacles that react to the surfaces they move across. What we do know is after the first encounter, its just not that intimidating. Keep your sails full of wind and the boat will move out of the Kraken zone and leave all the tentacles waving haplessly in the air.
