Ship Balancing

  • So after a lot of time on sloops and a decent amount of time on Galleons, I think there needs to be some serious changes in Galleon play, or a new mid level ship added. Currently a 2 man sloop can man sails and fire the gun with zero stress on the crew, but a galleon needs at least 2 people running sails and one manning the wheel to remain anything near agile, leaving... one man on the guns.

It's even worse with a 3 man crew, where you end up just getting your Sh*t pushed in by a decently played two man sloop.

The galleon seems more like a 5-6 player ship to me, and I'd think a 3-4 man ship like a brig (two masts, one controllable by the helmsman) would be an excellent gap filler. I realize this isn't something that can get an instant fix, but honestly the galleon is simply too undermanned to be used effectively when compared to the sloop.

I don't think so. Me and my friend were running from a galleon who kept grieving us and it still managed to catch up to us with us. The sloop needs to be faster.

  • @crossfade117 I solo escape galleons with ease. Don't sail with the wind, and use the maneuverability to navigate nasty waterways and the galleon will be left in the dust.

Swing by an outpost and make it look like you're dropping off stuff and the galleon will usually put one or two people out to intercept, leaving it unwieldy. Then switch directions and watch them plod along.

  • @r-seiler

We were sailing with the wind. We turned before they did and headed for an outpost. They pulled the anchor for a quick turn, and we thought we were in the clear. They caught up to us with no problem. If I'm not mistaken, they are the same speed. So it didn't really make any sense.

  • @crossfade117 Galleons are faster with the wind.

  • @r-seiler

So why does the galleon need more of a buff then? You can only have two on the sloop. One driving and one on the cannons, repairing, and working the sails unless the driver does.

  • @crossfade117 Never used the word "Buff" nor do I want one. The galleon is just fine as is performance wise, but needs to be a larger crew on board, with a middle range ship for 3-4 man crews.

Please read the initial post completely.

  • @r-seiler

    "Serious changes is galleon play".

That's what you initially said before you spoke about a mid ship. So what were you thinking? You were complaining about the galleon not having enough people. So obviously you were thinking something along the lines of a buff.

  • @crossfade117 A 50% increase in manpower is a serious change.

  • @crossfade117

More people would be a buff, because it would put the sloop at a even more disadvantage.

  • @r-seiler

    Wait

You just said you wouldn't wanna buff, but you do. I don't think you read your post completely the first time, but asked me to instead.

  • im going with the new ship option. the entire purpose of the sloop is to have all things within reach and easy to access, but apparently this is limited to just about everything accept repairs and firing the cannons.

basically i want a gunboat solo ship with only one cannon pointed toward the front and a mettle ram. however, with a lot less supply to carry. it would have only one deck and unique hull damage that basically has water leaking from the floor when damaged and also normally receives damage on its sides like other ships.

  • I play galleon with a 3 man crew. Everyone has clearly defined roles. Those roles include more than one job. You will suffer if the pilot never releases the helm to help raise anchor or trim aft sails. Galleon requires players to be mobile, static play will get you sunk. I don't know how you play and your crew play, but 4 people is more than enough for galleon. I do agree there needs to be a 3 man ship, as galleon is hectic one man down and sometimes you just want to take it easy in game.
The galleon is already much more offensive than sloop by design, and knowing 3 men can run it effectively leaves a 4th player to board the enemy ship, fire an extra gun, repair or whatever while the rest of the crew does as they normally do, pilot the ship.
The sloop however, doesn't have any disposable crew in an offensive setting, so they were designed with defense in mind, ie speed, maneuverability.

Adding more players on a galleon would make them unbeatable and lead to hours long chases at which point someone would be force to either give up and fight, or swap servers.

TL;DR Boats are balanced to one another, crew sizes are not (2vs4) we don't need to make it 2vs6
