Why does this game hate solo players?

  • I understand that the game warns that it is more difficult to be a solo player, but quite literally, every single measure of the balance of power in this game screws solo players. No chance of getting raid loot so your progress is way slower than any 4 person crew, yet you do way more work for every bit of gold. Your ship is drastically slower. 4 person crews receive equal gold yet do 1/4th the work. Literally, every single thing takes 4 times as long, yet you receive no additional benefit. Don't pirates split the booty? Does each chest automatically quadruple in value if it is turned in by a 4 person crew? I'm watching terrible players running around in dope ships fully kitted and I'm spending hours trying to get a jacket.

I am fine that I stand little chance when I get caught by a galleon, but why should every single other metric also be against me just because I don't care to deal with morons on my crew and none of my friends think the game is worth $60 (they may be right)?

then join 4 man crew if its difficult as solo, I've been able to do just fine alone too.

    [Brig intensifies]

  • @kermit1026 The game doesn't hate solo players, it just hates you ;)

Just joshing, though the game is designed to be more punishing to solo, and it does openly encourage you to find a crew (it is a "social" game) I must say I agree. The reward for turning in loot solo should be a little higher than when you're in a group.

  • @kermit1026 I'm primarily solo, only because the friend system is broken on PC. Yes it is slow, and difficult. But i like that. As i've been on a 4 man crew, and it takes little effort. My only reason for even considering a crew, is the look of the galleon is wicked compared to the sloop. But yes i have had my fair share of people afking on deck, playing instruments while you're fired upon, or joining me and sending me to the brig so they can sink the ship. People on SoT are idiots, and trolls; and there is little reason NOT to solo. I agree fully with you, but i accept the additional challenge. But we should be paid a little more for the difficulty.

Wait, what part of I would like to play the game solo, yet the balance is totally messed up did you not understand?

  • Game is meant to played as part of a crew. Join matchmaking or get some friends. Solo is an afterthought and will never be the main focus.

Its not even that hard to play solo. Its kind of like playing with a handicap. But if you dont want the handicap then play with others.

  • Your right with your post.
    4x gold when solo.

When theres 4 of us in a group playing the games loads easier.
Solo should be 4x the reward

Disagree. There should be no bonuses for playing the game alone. If its too hard then play with others.

  • You can play this game solo and have fun, it is a bit more difficult solo, but so would be sailing a ship on your own.

I have played many solo hours, and I do not see the "hate" you are talking about, but maybe you came in to it thinking solo would be a casual version of the game, when it is not.

I see many solo complaints looking like people thought the solo was "non-pvp" or casual.

It is the exact game, same perimeters, and same challenge that a 4 player crew face, only you are alone, so yeah, it is harder, but that is the fun of it.

  • Join a discord crew. A real one. I joined one yesterday, i've so far played the game solo, and yes i agree, the game screws over solos - little to no reward for hours of hard work - only trying to get a jacket or a hat - just to be shot down by a 4-man team in fancy suits.
I joined a team - hop on discord - and your pretty much set! I've yet to meet toxic people or "idiots" - yes i meet the "noob" sometimes, but if youare friendly towards your crew, most of the time, they will be friendly back! Raid skull forts, level up the merchants - and pray that the game will not be 2018 version of No Mans Sky.

  • I see it that way: The game is designed as a cooperation game, the solo sloop is just an addition for those who wish to play alone.

  • Its a co OP multiplayer online game. So it will be always better with other players. If you are a single player game fan then I am afraid to say SOT is not for you !

But why severely screw people over for it? The "join a crew" argument is exactly what I would love to avoid. The "ok the game is a little harder for solos" argument is ridiculous.... show me a video of a solo taking down a raid single handed, just one. It is literally impossible, yet a single raid is worth like 10k gold (40k total paid to a 4 person team). The game is drastically harder for a solo if you consider that the only goal is to increase your ranks and buy skins.

  • I don't think the game hates solo players, but that's definitely not the core design focus. That's like asking why the game hates skeletons.

Solo is meant to be more challenging. They've very clearly laid out a game that is meant to be played with others. It's an open world full pvp game that is multiplayer only. Even solo is not truly solo.

I do not want to see increased rewards for solo. That would encourage a sea full of soloists. That detracts from the design focus and weakens the game IMO.

  • Well, in general it is clear that people who enjoy the 4 person crews will always argue against a rebalance of rewards and suggest that solos aren't playing the game as intended.

To be clear, I have no problem getting owned by good 4 person crews and my loot taken. I have sunk some bad galleons as well. The PVP is not the problem, it is the impossibility of a great solo player ever having the same rate of progress through the game as a mediocre to poor 4 person player that bothers me. It should be rebalanced in some way.

And once again this is working as intended. A good solo player should never be able to take a good crew.

The. Game. Is. Meant. To. Be. Cooperative.

Solo play is and afterthought. I want development funds to be spent adding new content, no catering to folks that essentially dislike the premise of the game.

  • There is a chance of getting raid loot tho? Myself and friends have soloed the fort many times already lol.

  • I play a ton of solo but often jump into aduo game and I like it more than a group of 4. I love getting treasure and it running the galleon in my lil sloop. Solo, you just have to find the solo style that takes advantage of one to two treasure deposits at a time

If solo players aren't playing the game as intended then just eliminate that mode, why make masochism an option? Good to know you are incapable to seeing a different point of view though.

  • Did you research the game before you played it?

Here is the official description of the game.

"In Sea of Thieves, every sail on the horizon is a crew of real players, but what might their intentions be? Perhaps they’re seeking peaceful parley, plotting to deprive you of your hard-earned plunder or simply itching to enjoy the thrill of a good battle"

  • @kermit1026

So that people who want extra challenge or just want to play alone can have the option.

Also please dont mistake me not agreeing with your position as not understanding what you have to say. I very clearly understand your position and view, I just dont find any merit in it.

But maybe some people are just rude when people dont line up and form an echo chamber for their ideas, no matter how poorly thought out they may be.

  • Different tactics are required when sol, for example yesterday I spotted a galleon attacking a skelly fort, sailed towards them and scuttled, boarded their ship and sat in their crows nest whilst they did the work. On the final wave another galleon came in and attacked them whilst this was happening the first crew unlocked the vault and ran with the fort chest with the second galleon in pursuit. I waited till both had left and ransacked the vault hiding the loot in bushes around the fort. Went back 40mins later loaded up and cashed in for 8k gold

  • I've been playing solo and been doing fine. If you're solo and run into a galleon it's gonna be brutal, but that's the pirate's life. You chose that road, so you gotta deal with it. Also, if the rewards were upped for solo, NO ONE would play on a crew. Don't change the rewards please.

  • I find the solo play just as entertaining as crew play because it is a different experience. It is harder, but you also stay busy on a voyage. With a crew, there tends to be lull and goofing off time which is good because you are sailing with three others and being social. As a solo, you have no social interaction per se, so more things to hone your skills and keep you busy.

I have had pretty good success on my solo voyages. I'd say only about 25% of the time have I been harrassed/attacked/sunk in PvP action. Rest of the time has been just good pirate fun.
