Have we decided on a name for the anchor maneuver?

  • The maneuver where you turn hard and then drop anchor to do a 180 is a popular staple move for sailing a ship, so I thought we should give it a name seeing how often we have to shout out to the rest of the crew when were planning on doing it, or have we already decided on a name? anchor turn? pivot maneuver? Handbrake? The dirty w***h? Sounds like a unnecessary question I know, but having a well known name for it means less confusion when needing to give commands to a pug crews.

Edit: So based on the responses it seems the most common name is Anchor Turn, but the closest to being grammatically correct is club hauling. Bootleg also seems close, but that seems to be more with vehicles than ships, even if it was used in a PotC movie, that doesn't mean its correct. Kedging was also used often but that seems to be used when the ship has already been mostly stopped and used to drag the ship into place like when in a port. However even club hauling isn't exactly correct because the maneuver were talking about in SoT isn't really possible, so it's up for interpretation. All that being said, we can call it whatever we want as a community, so how about a straw poll? I listed most of the terms used in the post.

  • How about Trevor

  • I actually like the idea of giving it sentience with a normal name like Patrick lol

  • Good name for it would be j-turn

  • In france we tend to call it "the handbrake turn"

    Staf'

  • Crew to Attention!

'About Face' or even 'Aboat Face'

  • I just call it a U-ey :)

  • I've always just called it an anchor turn. Don't fix what isn't broken. I'm sure different crews will have different names tho.

The answer is in the question :)

I thought about "do the locomotion" cuz everybody's doing this brand-new maneuver now. But no...

  • Just a U-turn? Which is what it is right?

  • @imprudentgoose I believe it's called 'club hauling' as used in the recent potc movie -

    clubhauling

    Noun
    clubhauling (plural clubhaulings)

(nautical) A risky maneuver whereby a sail-boat tacks (turns sharply into the wind) by dropping one of the front anchors, the intent being to snag the anchor on the seabed and use the ship's momentum to swing it around faster than could otherwise be accomplished; it is essentially a nautical handbrake turn.

    Clubhauling wiktionary

  • well U-turn could also just mean turn around, if someone shouted that out I wouldn't know if they meant start turning around or specifically do the anchor maneuver that will stop the boat and require everyone to immediately raise it again, but good suggestions so far guys, I just hope for a general consensus

  • Aye, let's give 'em the ol' Jimmy's Twist so we can hit 'em broadside.

  • I believe it's called a Bootleg turn.

  • @redan-vir What kind of vessel be that? Is that what the landlubber's be using these days? How long have I been at sea?!

  • @ragefire31

Hah! Just a graphic! Here is more to support my thought.

EDIT: Time stamp didn't work apparently. Go to about 2 minutes in.

  • @redan-vir Ahhh yes, I suppose ye be havin' a point there lad, but, I still prefer my term for it, the Jimmy's Twist has a nice ring to it, and will confuse my adversaries as they won't know of what I speak until I've already begun me broadside assault on their vessel.

  • @imprudentgoose Hmm. Is there a name for it already? I just call it an "anchor turn".

  • @sonofbruuf Take a look at my name for it and see whatcha think, after all, we are to be our own pirates, we can come up with our own terms, being that they are not vulgar or rude.

  • I've just been calling it a bootleg turn /shrug. Easy enough to remember.

  • @imprudentgoose we already did. Anchor Turn F*W

  • @avecrux Nay lad, I believe a better name could be made than that, I made my term for it the Jimmy's Twist, remember, we are to be our own pirates, so give it something fancy to spice it up, ye don't want your adversaries knowing what yer gonna do now do ya?

  • @ragefire31 sailing with the randoms as captain:

Me: Ok guys, make a Jimmy's Twist ASAP!
Crew: what the f&*k? Lock him in the brig, he is possesed by demons

  • @katttruewalker Man nice you done your research

  • @avecrux Aye, that's why it would be wise to teach your crew your ways before setting sail, then you all can become legendary pirates, your own commands and language, leaving nothing in your path to getting the loot ye seek.(I've never been locked in the brig for that so I can't relate. XD)

  • The Tedakin is a good name.

  • @tedakin There ya go lad! That be a great name for it. Now ye just need to remember it to teach your crew when the time comes.

  • In my crew we call it DROP THE ANCHOR !

  • @nefrit-od If ye have a name for yer ship, what's it going to be? If yer name fer it was like say.. The Charlotte, you could say,"Drop the Charlotte's claw!" Just an idea for ye.

no thx :D its anchor and its droping :D no need to call it differently

  • @nefrit-od Aye, that be true.

  • @imprudentgoose

UK - Handbrake Turn as technically, it's kinda the same thing; using the parking brake and vehicle momentum to change direction suddenly.

  • When i play with my friends we always call it handbrake 😁
If i will be with randoms i will probably call it anchor turn

  • Last streetest I had a discussion with a random team mate that went crazy each time we did...he said the ship takes damage when you do it, I told him no, it doesnt.

Does anyone have a clear and accurate answer on that? Does the ship take damage when you do that turn?
