Stealth mode

  • While playing on the Stress test I noticed that there was no way to hide on an island from other pirates. Even if you go into some high ferns it still shows your name tag for all to see. What do you guys think of maybe adding stealth to some areas to make an ambush possible?
Edit: This post is not about camping. Sorry if it came across this way.

  • @the-bobcat-316 I think there should be a button to crouch/go prone. Then, your gamertag would disappear and you would make less noise when moving. I don't know why they didn't add it. I think it's because the developers don't want a stealth feeling to the game. We all want action! But it would be nice to have a "stealth mode".

  • @the-bobcat-316
    hide on an island??
or do you really mean camp at an outpost??

  • @logansdadtoo No I did not mean camp at an outpost. Areas of the map, not all.

  • @the-bobcat-316
Ok, explain to me the scenario where you could set up an ambush.

  • @the-bobcat-316 do you mean something like this scenario: "your on a ship and some random ship is getting close and you are on your own only because your shipmates are on the island or your the last one left alive and you are trying to "hide" so they think its empty and you can sneak attack them when they board your ship." am I close?

  • @cyber-phazon657 This “LogansDadToo” is trying to [Mod edited] everybody off. He just doesn’t give up.

  • They should just add guard npcs to outposts and maybe have outposts have different player affiliations and that would solve that problem anyways. I would love a crouch that made your name disappear and let stowing away and stealth be more possible, just make the players go really slow when crouching, and I wouldn’t add in prone.

No need for that sort of response!
Just because i disliked your suggestion, grow up!
Reported you for breaching the pirate code.

  • @a-cranky-eskimo I agree with you. Go Prone would be unnecessary.

  • @logansdadtoo Ok so this idea came from the stress test while we were searching for treasure on an island (not an outpost). A galleon pulled up and to the same island and started shelling our ship. We came up with the idea of hiding in the ferns while they came ashore to find us, thus surprising them. While this didn’t work it did pose the idea of having some areas in the game stealthed so this could work. You do bring up a good point about outposts and my answer is simply bind the chests to the account when at an outpost. What’s your thoughts on this?

  • I could have really done with a stealth mode when due to some really "questionable" parking of our ship (not by me I might add) me and my crews ship got sort of in the shores of an island and we just got a barrage of attacks none stop - it would have been nice to go into stealth and try to pick them off and escape with our treasure rather than scuttling the ship and respawning elsewhere

  • @cyber-phazon657 That would be one of the scenarios yes.

  • @logansdadtoo Oh, I’m scared now! You grow up! “A couple of small issues: pirates didn’t have submarines, pirates didn’t have scuba gear!!” What’s up with being rude to people? I know that pirates didn’t have a submarine or a scuba gear. I didn’t say that because you disagreed with me. I said that because YOU are being rude to everyone! So go ahead...

  • @the-bobcat-316
Ok, in that scenario i will admit that a crouch or stealth mechanic would be quite useful.
My argument is that it would just get abused, hence my outpost camping reply.
No offence intended & sorry if i came across rather blunt :)

  • @spaark99 to be fair, you jumped on something they said (that wasn't even directed at you...) and just went straight for personal abuse

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/pirate-code

  • The outpost issue is a separate
Issue that is connected to some degree but would be better solved by a direct fix on the outpost, not by removing an entire aspect of the game that really makes sense to have in the game. Stealth and misdirection are valid and I would say obvious pirate tactics. Its not like pirates are going to be ghilly suited up... just a way to remove the floating text above
Our heads lol.. if they add guards
    At the outpost you lose
Maybe one chest per person if the person/crew kills you and cashed in before killed by the guards. Sounds like a fair compromise to
Me. I would like some outposts to have faction associations (not trading companies) so that some are safer for pvp because of faction based player alliances. We will see what they have planned for after launch.

  • A stealth feature that is usable on Non-Outpost islands could work, I like the idea of hiding the GT while crouched in foliage.

As an aside, Diving bells date back to 4th century BC. The most recognizable diving gear of a metal helmet connected to two hoses and an air pump was developed in 1715, right smack dab in the Golden Age of Pirates. Granted pirates most likely couldn't get their hands on them because of scarcity and limited application, not because they didn't exist.

  • @triheadedmonkey
It's coz i disagreed with his suggestion he posted earlier!!
He didn't like my reply & has spat his dummy

  • maybe there could be certain part of a area where you can choose to hide. like hiding in a barrel that's empty or some kind of container. the way I would think you could tell someones in it when you see barrels is that the cover of the barrel or crate is cracked a little for "air" or the barrel shake a little. that way if your far away it looks like a normal barrel or crate. but get close enough and you will see something is wrong with it. would be great for role play. trying to find your enemy when there's like a few crates and barrels around you.

  • I would love a stealth mode as well. It would help if I am searching an island for a while and end up with a galleon full of players stomping around the place while I have a captain's chest to deal with. I could just hide until they finish and leave unless they sink my ship.

Just to be clear, hiding out at an outpost to ambush other players is not abuse. You may not like it, but that does not equate to abuse. Too many threads already are filled with great posts covering the numerous options you have available to you to avoid being ambushed at an outpost.

Outpost camping is a cheap, dirty tactic used by lowlifes, if thats ok with you, fine, but i don't want this game ruined c**p tactics!
I didn't say outpost camping was abuse, i said the stealth mechanic would be abused, & would make camping even easier!

  • @logansdadtoo i never played a game where I got spawned killed at a base camp or some outpost. if I have that happened to me, I probably forgot about it. i really don't care about it. but if i do see it when I'm near an outpost when game launches and I'm on my ship, I'm turning around and stay on my ship sailing wherever i want.

It really wouldnt - as mentioned in many different threads about this issue there are ways and means to see if your outpost has a camper... the main being... Look in the water, if theres a mermaid floating, you are going to be ambushed... move to a different outpost

  • I've heard this suggestion before, but I personally see no need for it. Granted, my knowledge is restricted to my own experiences, but I've been surprised by other players a few times.

Maybe I'm just desensitized to them, but the gamertags never seemed that "in-your-face" to me. Stealth seems possible to a point and beyond that...

Well, we're pirates after all; not ninjas.

  • @logansdadtoo
No I get what he is saying there needs to be a way of hiding. I have ran into situations where I could have benefited from this but they could see me plain as day. I wasn’t camping.

  • @sergent-c****r
The scenario @the-bobcat-316 explained, is about the only scenario it would be required. If another crew came to the island you are already on, i can't think of any others!
All other uses of it would be underhand tactics or griefing & abuse. As if you can't see someones gamertag & they are abusive etc, how do you know who to report?

Also we do already have this sort of feature (not GT removal) but to hide behind objects. You can just use the sit emote! This also gives you the advantage of being able to look around in 3rd person perspective as well ;)

  • @spaark99 I think that would be a good idea but I feel as if a trade off would be necessary, perhaps in exchange for crouching and you name tag being hidden you are left immobile or you move VERY slowly.

Don't give away my sit strategy!!!

I have legit being using this as a "crouch" mechanic to hide behind things lol.

  • Whilst on a 2 man sloop my friend sank it while I was digging up chests.

I swam out and brought all SIX of our chests to the shore and waited for him to sail back.

As he approached another ship swooped in. I told him to sail off and lose them as I hid our chests in the bushes.

They sank him again. And from WAAAAAY out away from the ocean they saw my name in the bushes. Like, not even close to the island.

So there's me sat on the shore just watching this galleon approach me who spotted my name from a mile away.
