Better Together? Solo Queue?

  • During the last Closed Beta, I did not queue with a group at all. This led to some very interesting, bad, and good experiences. I will give you an overall rundown of my experience. I got in alot of matches where the team either had no clue what to do, and didn't respond to voice chat, or else just didn't care and trolled, trying to do their own thing. These people are very difficult to work with. I've got in numerous ones where people use voice chat, but just don't play as a team. We got to an island, I hoped off, dug up the chest, and turned around to see them sailing away. "We don't care about chests, we want battle!" they said. And on rare occasions, you get with a group that chats, plays well, and works together. These are the experiences that made the game for me.
Unfortunately, you cannot ever tell what you will get with solo queue. I've been spawn killed over and over by a troll, I've been cast in the brig and vomited on for absolutely no reason, and I've had epic battles. However, overall my experience as a solo player has been epic. With that said, if you can get a team of people you know/play with and work together well, that is absolutely without doubt the best way to have the full Sea of Thieves experience! Cheers! 🍺

UPDATE I need to clarify, I meant "solo-queue" with a random 4-man crew. I was not playing solo on a sloop.

  • @juicysneeze118 Theres a crew finder thread on the forums matey, i suggest using that. In my opinion the game is truly at its best when played with 3 others with headsets!

The tales and adventures to be had are brilliant! And its great just hearing peoples reactions to the random situations you find yourselves in. :)

  • @knifelife I totally agree with you! I myself am part of a fleet and hope to have some awesome experiences this weekend! As for a crew-finder, something about the unknown of solo-queue is appealing. Cheers! 🍺

  • I solo'd all thru closed beta. Went with a galleon crew this time. Much better!

  • @conal-cuan Yeah I can understand why that would be tough. I should have clarified in my post what I meant. I solo-queued for a galleon crew, and was with 3 random players. Some of those experiences were bad!

  • @juicysneeze118 Ewwww, yeh heard about those experiences. I'm not that outgoing enough for joining a 4-man solo.

  • @JuicySneeze118 I play solo 99% of the time, and have found this to be waaaaay better. I only crew up if somebody has a mic or if my friends are online. The game can be unplayable if you team up with people with no microphones and randos tend to troll

  • @thewolfman321 I played a lot of solo too, but unfortunately while I was off on an island finding treasure I would often have 2-4 man crews run up on me and sink my ship and kill me while I was docked. Unfortunately, like any other game, there will be toxic people and trolls. I personally when sailing with a crew let 1 man crews go, they deserve a good time. But that's just me :)
    Cheers! 🍺

  • @juicysneeze118 same thing has happened to me except I read the part when I queued solo that it’s the most risky, so when these galleons attacked I had simply been paying attention and either left or on occasion sunk and harassed a galleon by myself and earned chests that they gave up on coming back for. In an open world pvp pirate game with an emphasis on stealing so big that its literally in the name, i would think it was more you not paying attention than anyone being trolls by sinking you in a pirate game consisting of ship combat, small arms combat, and a quest to get a physical form of loot, that is there to facilitate theft during encounters of ship and small arms combat. Its not trolling you just didn’t pay attention.

Its not satisfying combat, but neither is driving by the only ship you’ve seen in 45 minutes or more.

Point is neither player is really wrong for wanting to play the way they want but unless they change the game it’s up to your awareness to avoid combat no game mechanic will do it for you.

  • @a-cranky-eskimo I understand what you are saying, but I was not saying the trolls are the 4-man crews sinking me. I was saying trolls in general, like trolling your own teammates.

  • @juicysneeze118 got ya, and I do hear ya about just letting some sloops do their thing. I just hate how much pvping and trolling seem to be in a gray area for a lot of people in this game, and specifically on the forum. Such a wierd draw of casual and hardcore gamers to this game that its hard to say what is trolling or expected gameplay. I lean a lot more towards most things being expected gameplay until they add any type of incentive in game to stifle pvp or give reason for co op besides everything being up to our imaginations.

  • I'd strongly discourage anyone of ever playing this game solo again. Mainly because of the removal of the amount of weapons you can carry, making it essentially impossible to kill someone 1v1, unless one shot with the blunderbuss.

Secondly, only having 5-10 shots at most, makes the skeleton island quests a chore, due to the natural lack of ammunition to even kill standard monsters.

  • @lenny2k3 Well to be honest this game is not meant to be played solo. While it offers solo, I don't think it is a viable option. And the decrease on the amount of weapons you can carry is a huge drawback, like you said. I've single-handedly killed numerous 4-man crews by boarding their ship then switching weapons as I fight to eliminate reload times, the reloading when opportunity presents itself. Not sure if I'll like it, as I have not actually played this current Beta yet. Excited to see how it works!

  • @juicysneeze118
I share that opinion. I will probably never play this game solo, because of the nature of the game. Making it however a complete chore by removing weapons and content is beyond comprehension. The game is already very shallow, reducing it further to nothingness does nothing to remedy that.

You should give solo a shot now the beta though, and truly enjoy the experience of no strategy or conent.

  • I meet a team of 3 and joined them, such a good experience

  • @gabe-brl Nice! I hope you gave many more awesome adventures! Cheers! 🍺

  • The game so far seems like the most unpleasant experience when playing below 3 players. My roomate and I couldn't even complete the quests due to camping the outposts.

  • It can be done, sunk a couple galleons solo yesterday. The 2 weapon change actually helps solo players because then there are only 2 possible loaded weapons per person instead of all 3 and a sword, which is usually too useful To go without, leaving 1 loaded weapon per person. This helps balance immensely, And just gives each player more tactical potential by reducing each players power to chain weapon shots together before reloading. Which helps 4 player crews dominate a lot more than the 2 weapon limit.

The fact that less weapons gives each individual more tactical advantage sounds false but it is true, it’s just more about choosing your loadout to fit a situation. And the fact that everyone has to do this makes people take more time and be cautious and not just rush you with 4 weapons. I heard the analogy that it would be like allowing everyone to have 4 weapons at once in halo, which is a perfect example imo.
