You shouldn't abuse "THE" exploit

  • I'm still unsure why Rare didn't temporarily disable "THAT" voyage but we can all be sure that they wouldn't want us to exploit it. Many people have tried it for sure and I think that's fine but you shouldn't abuse it, too much of it can ruin the game for you and others in different ways.

It probably will not be bannable, if it were Rare would have already clarified it on social media to protect players, effectively preventing them from getting banned by exploiting the system as people will not do it if they know they'll get banned and at the same time prevent them from using the exploit for the same reason. The reason why they are not clarifying the situation is much probably because they don't want to ban people for this, clarifying it now would tempt much more people to exploit and that is not what Rare wants. By not speaking openly they are trying to make people worried about a possible ban to prevent them from exploiting.

This said you still shouldn't abuse the exploit too much. If you used it already a couple sessions you are much probably gonna be fine but stop there :)

  • I mean people abuse sprint canceling while double gunning to get an advantage in PVP and steal loot. They abused double bucketing to double your bilge speed. I mean this game has a spaghetti code. They add one thing and 4 things break. If it's in the game why not use it like all the other game-breaking things that have never been removed?

  • I've said it before. I don't think this should result in a ban. Zero their gold or make it go negative seems appropriate.

We found a weak point and focused on it. Not to Karen, but this should have been caught in testing. Punishing the clever is a horrible tactic.

  • @pithyrumble Lets be honest here, The only way you will get caught doing this is by streaming it or posting a video on youtube shows your acct name or something. With the code in this game They will have no idea of how people earned their gold.

    You wanna bet? 😏

  • Milestones shows exactly how much information they can access.

  • @pithyrumble I mean if they do something like your mentioned they better be paying us back for all the gold we have spent on saving our ship cosmetics only for it to not save the cosmetics and have to spend it again. Which wont happen.

  • @ssolutionss

Oh of course. I'm more about saying players shouldn't get banned for finding a hole and sinking the proverbial ship.

Saved items is a different discussion and a voyage of restitution is lazy I agree.

  • @pithyrumble agreed, I dont think they will do anything until its patched or extremely abused. I mean no one got banned or lost gold when you could buy infinite commodities and sell them when those came out.

  • @ssolutionss I really wouldn't place any bets on that matey...

Voyages placed down and cancelled in quick succession could easily be a way they could track that and they do have all that data.

  • @faceyourdemon No one got banned for the flag duplication exploit, so I am sure this will be the same in this case too!

The tweets that were sent this week (by none Rare employees) have now been removed - And their sources never saw the light of day.

Nothing is official until it is official.

  • @musicmee Then im in the wrong to blame Rare, I apologize.

So as for now its allowed

  • I wonder if this exploit has something to do with the server instabilities me and my friends are experiencing currently.
Since this weekend it's been significantly worse.

  • @grog-minto

It is possible, large quantities of floating objects can indeed cause server issues.

  • @pellahh Im very doubtful that this exploit infested the seas already

  • Saw it a week or two before idiots started bragging about it.

  • I was hopping around in open crew galleons (That's the real SOT community experience right there) for fun and one of them had some... Suspicious amount of a certain chest containing certain type of two items. Didnt know what was it then so I figured they just stole it or something.

Welp... Now I know. Lets hope they dont do a banwave XD

  • @pellahh they aren't addressing it because it only brings attention to it, thus more people will look into it and therefore use it. The exploit has been around for weeks, and it took this long to go mainstream?

The more items spawned in the world in general the more chance the server session gets more and more unstable this is why when I was in alliance servers we would dump items into the waters since they are set to sink and be removed if they were not going to be handed in.

But yes if there is a mass of items it can slowly affect the session you are in especially if there are multiple ships doing the same.

This is the main reason to be aware when people are doing this.

  • Ban them all.

  • It's really funny how Rare mobilizes with exploit like this but turns a blind eye to server alliances.

  • @targasbr

Exploiting a voyage to cheese loot? How dare you!

Exploiting the matchmaking system to cheese loot? Meh, you're fine.

Exploiting a voyage to win 500k? This is wrong! We need to do something about it ASAP!
Exploiting the matchmaking system to destroy the essence of the game and earn the same 500k at the same time without any effort? We don't like it, but we're not going to act on it.

  • Posting about it just encourages others, then we have partners lying to people saying 'you'll be banned' when no one is going to be banned from doing the exploit. infact it isn't even an exploit. It's a bug that is all. Rare go with the 'tools no rules' they'll have acknowledged the bug and working on a patch. People need to stop getting so irate and focus on their own gameplay and not others that are simply using the tools they was provided. Unless its toxic behaviour or cheating then its no concern of ours how others play the game.

  • @taternuggets

Nah, even with this exploit people still need to sell the loot which means they can still get sunk. Alliance servers are much more profitable (when runned by decent crews) and your loot can't get stolen there, they also are much more against the Sea of Thieves intended core gameplay; if they ban people exploiting this they should also ban all server alliance players.

  • People acting like it's not a big deal and just some gold cheese when it's wrecking the servers it is happening on, ban or not ban the game running terribly is not good for activity and only feeds into the narratives that the game is broke, that people are cheating, etc

Many people have no idea this is even a thing, all they know is that their experience was laggy as hell, the experience wasn't pleasant because of it, it interfered with their session, and they might just go play something else.

I've randomly run into this nonsense multiple times and what it's doing to the server is ridiculous. Easily can run people off the game.

All the lag worsens hit reg issues and combat anomalies and just creates more cheating accusations.

  • @wolfmanbush Great, then its up to Rare to fix the exploit, not punish the players.
Its literally toxic to wish these players to be banned for that.

Knowingly causing damage to servers goes far beyond gold cheesing or harmless advantage

Toxic? it's worsening the experience for everyone else on the server. They aren't victims. They aren't innocent when they do stuff that significantly affects others negatively.

  • @wolfmanbush Thats on Rare to fix, not us to take responsibility.

All this talk really makes me want to try it myself (Not that Ive got time to play)

    I'd say it's on both

especially the longer it goes on and the worse it gets

  • Players shouldn't be banned for finding a hole and sinking the ship. A formal, punitive reaction is reasonable. Reset guilty Players to before they started exploiting it.
    You have the data.
    You can do it.

Anyone asking for player bans found out about it after Rare noticed it and should be marked for review.

    Y'all mad you missed out.

Or some people knew about it the entire time and decided that gold isn't worth sacrificing the quality of life for others.

There are going to be consequences to activity even if nobody wants to take responsibility. The game running poorly and causing weakened experiences harms us all in the end. There is no abundance of interesting server activity here, people's individual experiences being negatively affected by things like this ends up negatively affecting all by people being less motivated to participate.

  • @wolfmanbush

    You calling me out? 😆

I didn't make the connection when we were discussing random loot piles that were showing up.

I don't recall you saying so either.

It's really not worth my effort like server Alliances. It's not what they wanted and they're slapping the brakes on it. If Server Alliances were an actual issue they would have issued a vague warning and slapped the brakes on it.

    Just like this.

  • It will all be ok people, this too shall pass. Enjoy it while it's here and go buy your DA sails. Not like having more gold let's you buy top gear in a game and have an advantage over them. I think the unlimited supplies at sea dog tavern was worse because that gave an advantage to people with more gold than beginners. That too passed and all is OK 👍.
