Saying Goodbye to The Arena

  • @happygeckoaz interesting idea if rare is willing to colaberate with another studio.

  • Can you guys please give players at least a day or so to finish out their current Arena levels? It's not very cool to just come out and say that you're giving out exclusive rewards for certain cut offs without warning and not giving anyone a chance to at least finish their current levels in progress. I was one level before a cut off, and now I learn there's cosmetics I was a level away from earning after the fact? Especially considering I tried to buy this level with doubloons earlier this week and due to some kind of server instability I kept getting the error message "Sorry, just daydreaming about the next adventure. Ask again!" And now I've lost my chance?

  • @m0zza3749 That would make the grind that people went through useless. As someone that has all comondation and has had all of them for a long time I belive that it would be unfair for them to just say lets put it into adventure. They are working on new pirate legend wepons for adventure and you will just have to grind them in the time you have left of accept that they are not gona be available anymore.

  • Players who have maxed out Arena commendations should get a Silver Curse that is a silver recolor of the gold hoarder curse.

  • @crossx2 Thats unfortunat but if they hadent cut it off the arena would have just been filled by AFK players not fighting but only afking for levles this would destroy the expierience for the remaining people that still want to actualy play while they still can and have fun not just farming afk ships sitting at the spawns. The point of this cut off is only there so the good boy is still a semi rare ship.

  • @justsaiyen93 Well not everyone has had sea of thieves for two years, some might of gotten in in recent months and been dedicated arena players too when they got on

  • It's understandable why Arena had to go, but this was probably the worst way to do things. The timeframe of 42 days to finish everything is extremly short considering how grindy most of the commendations are and the cosmetics being unavailiable permanently after that. Also the cut off for the good boy cosmetics is really frustrating and arbitrary, especially right before community day with the reputation boost.
I don't think we'll see a repeat of this situation, considering that it was arena getting removed, but please next time give us a fitting timeframe to grind things before they go away.

  • Arena is a Gateway to Sea of Thieves

This decision seems to be one taken to pander to a core group of players who are mostly interested in the immersive, role playing aspect of the game, rather than those who play games for the thrill of competition and testing their skills against other players. i can understand the desire to specialise in one area of the gaming market in order to make the best product you can for that group of customers, but in doing this you are limiting your customer base and making the game less appealing to other types of gamers. i think for a lot of people who are not used to the slower paced gameplay in Adventure mode, Arena offered a stepping stone from other more intense types of games like First Person Shooter, into the world of Sea of Thieves. At other times it might have given players a chance to take out some of their frustrations after having been sunk by another crew in Adventure and loosing a lot of hard earned loot, while also helping them to build up their skills and confidence for the next encounter. i know for me there were periods where i would basically only play Arena especially in it's early days, but as time went on and less and less content made it's way to Arena i like so many others found less and less reasons to play it. To be honest, while i did play the game pretty consistently for the first three years of it's release, i have barely played it for the last year, with the game having gone in a direction that doesn't interest me as much. Even so i do still have a sentimental attachment to it, having spent so many hours playing it. Perhaps Arena was destined to fade away eventually but i do still think it had a lot of potential left in it and it's a shame that it never got the attention that it deserved. Perhaps this is not the time, but i have long thought that after the first two or three islands were dug up and fought over, then the shroud should move in to force the crews to fight it out for the last five minuets or so and stop crews from being passive and avoiding conflict after they have accumulate enough points. Anyway i know this is not likely to make any difference, i just thought i should take some time to show that some of us still care about this mode and will be sad to see it go.

  • Cor blimey, it looks like March 10th is set to be the biggest bug fix update we've seen so far! ;D

Snarkiness aside, another chapter in Sea of Thieves history passes and I'll raise my tankard to the Sea Dogs Arena for the ambition it had and the memories that it leaves in its wake. I'm really eager to see what you lot at Rare get up to with the reallocated resources from Arena development and hosting; there's plenty more good times ahead, that I am sure of.

The very first time my friend and I finished first place in Arena was when we were sailing the Good Boy.

I certainly sympathise with those who, just like myself, never reached level 50 and therefore feel like they've had the door slammed on their fingers, especially when this announcement was so abrupt. Though I concur with @musicmee in that there's never really going to be a good time for this. Personally I'm just glad these ship sets aren't going to be cast into oblivion once Arena closes because they carry the weight of a lot of good memories and I'll treat the 5 sets that I will have with the enjoyment that they deserve. Thank you for this rather lovely gift!

To those of you who are also out grinding the Glorious/Triumphant/Victorious/legendary Sea Dog sets I wish you the best of luck in this next month that we have left. Godspeed and God help us all. Once more into the breach, dear chums!

  • @brunokuz Well another idea that came to mind is they could of had the cutoff at the end of community day which is the end of the month, thus, only just a handful of days from now.

Which would be plenty of chance for all of the dedicated arena players new and old to finish that last stretch, and everyone else to at least get up to five to enjoy all those other simpler sets.

Keeps the spirit of it being a gift for those high level sea dogs still intact, and would also give Arena a last hurrah of activity.

I only got up to level 9, so that fancy set is far far out of any reach for me personally, but I admit, I've also got a strong bias against timed exclusives and artificial scarcity, so naturally I would be in favor of the option that would let more people have a chance at getting the thing if it's about to be closed off.

Those peeps hovering in the 40-49's should deserve just as much a chance of getting that fancy set too since they've also put in a lot of time to reach.
Even if it might only just be those already past 45 that might have the best chance to grind out those last few levels in time, at least they had the chance.

I didn’t play Arena much, but I know some of you really enjoyed it. Once they close the doors on the mode for good, and after you have had time to mourn the loss, I hope that you join the rest of us and that we meet on the waves in Adventure mode. Chances are you’ll have zero trouble sinking our crew and eating our lunch. I look forward to it.

    trust me you dont

Trust me, I do. But why do you feel that way? Keep in mind, the proportion of players who regularly played Arena is very small.

  • Good riddance. As a solo, being forced to climb the ranks through open crews was one of the most awful experiences I've ever had in any game. Nothing good would have ever come out of that place.

you dont have any chances against arena kings
    I know I dont.
Well, the hackusations from crews losing 5 chests gonna pile up on them and they gonna get banned. Unjustifiably, but it is how it is on the seas =)

No. I played Arena enough to know most players and crews on there could not pull it together. Some were okay, but most were just awful. A very small group of Arena players played it a lot and turned it into a TDM mode. The original point of Arena was to be a shorter version of SoT, though it never really achieved that. And making it TDM got even further away from that idea. If I want to play TDM or something similar then I play other titles that do a better job of it. I play SoT for what it does well. Even if every Arena player was a PvP monster (most were not), they still would not amount to enough players to make much of a difference on adventure servers. And keep in mind, plenty of crews in adventure mode can fight too. It’ll be okay. It really will.

No one’s. The first post in this thread explains it very well. I have said it many times over the last couple of years. Arena was a mistake. Not enough of us enjoyed it enough to justify keeping it going. There are better titles out there for what doing what it became.

  • @ghostpaw until you meet a real arena crew then

thats just like your opinion man
maybe devs should try and you know... DEVELOP the game i dont know?

  • I understand wanting to reward the playerbase that stuck with Arena, but awarding exclusive cosmetics to accounts with Rank 5/50 Sea Dog with absolutely zero prior warning and a cutoff before the announcement was a bad call. A lot of folks are 1-2 ranks away from these now unobtainable rewards and they never had a chance to try and get them. Even a few hours notice would've been preferable to this.

I love Sea of Thieves and I like Rare, but this was handled very poorly in my opinion. Sea of Thieves' only visible progression is through cosmetics, and it isn't right to remove cosmetics from that pool without even trying to give people a chance.

I really hope Rare rethinks this decision. Give people a weekend, a day, some kind of chance to get that last rank before an entire gamemode of cosmetics disappears.

  • I still cant believe you seriously give people who are Level 45+ the same as people who are Level 5. It's like an insult to the hours I spent grinding the Sea Dog levels... just shameful tbh.

  • I just think it's unfair of you to turn the players unable to get The Good Boy, didn't gave any heads up, you're just saying "haha so long suckas"... I don't have much time to play, but every spare time I play arena to reach lvl 50 and get the comendations. I'm now at lvl37 and didn't even know about this ship because the system to acknowledge cosmetics through commendation is horrific in this game. At least let everyone have the chance to earn it...

  • What will happen with the triumphant sea dog set in particular?

  • To all those complaining about the cutoff date for for getting level 50, I wonder if it's a matter of capacity. If they extended the date, you'd probably have a large amount of the player base trying to grind that out. I wonder if the Arena servers just couldn't handle that kind of spike for the next month and a half and that's why Rare made that cutoff decision.

Sure, you're going to have a spike from now to 3/10 because people are going to try to grind for LSD if they're close enough, but we all know that getting LSD is a much more daunting task than just getting to level 50, so it is not going to be nearly as high of a spike as if they offered to let people get to level 50 by cutoff date.

It stinks, but it is what it is.

    @voltagebound

What will happen to any Achievements ties to The Arena and the Sea Dogs?

Our Live Operations team are currently investigating our options regarding achievements linked to The Arena. As soon as we have a final plan, we'll update the Key Questions part of the Saying Goodbye to The Arena article

    Thank you rare!

Personally played Arena only a few times, wasn't for me, it had its issues with Toxic players and wasn't fun to be honest. There are countless other great games out there for enclosed PVP, Sea of Thieves is an adventure game and the PVP in adventure is so much fun. I get why it's there, like Crucible in Destiny, but i'm in favour of it going.

But yes, please do tidy this up so we don't have dead areas of the game, unachievable things, which does extend to Xbox Achievements.

  • what is with the legendary weapons for being grade 50 and legend, the sword and stuff?

  • "The cutoff point for being eligible for these rewards was today, January 27th at 6pm UK time. Rewards will be distributed after the closure of The Arena on March 10th."

I managed to get to 50 a while ago but never bought the rank rewards, i really hope i dont get screwed over by this...

  • We've heard and discussed your feedback on the awarding of The Good Boy ship cosmetics to players who had already reached rank 50 with the Sea Dogs, but the thinking behind this gift remains unchanged and it is not a decision we will be reversing.

All players who spent enough time in The Arena to reach rank 5 during its lifespan will receive five sets of themed ship cosmetics for free to show our thanks for taking part.

This bonus gift is in recognition of those truly dedicated players who spent significant time in The Arena during its almost three-year lifespan, something we feel is worth an additional thank you; it should not be seen as a time-limited reward that players were recently encouraged to grind for and then unfairly prevented from acquiring, hence the date being capped when we announced it.

  • Ironically and my fault partly, I’ve been sitting on 49 for like 12 months hoping we would get at least something small at some point so i can end the 50 grind with a bang.

Not going to lie, I think the spring up of this announcement without giving players at least a final hurrah grind for rewards is very poorly thought out. Again, partly my fault for sitting on 49 for ages but still feels like a big double finger to some fans. Much deserved for those already dedicated to getting 50 already but still just a bad approach.

It’s like ending something in a disappointing fashion then rubbing it in your faces.

As a small side note; this is something that I’ve noticed over time. There seems to be a creeping trend of making decisions without opening the options to the community. The shovel exploit is one example of this. Didn’t do any harm at all, I understood the bucket one, but yeah just seems like some of these decisions are tapering away from that original flare of the community and the devs making the game together. It’s still your game at the end of the day and fair enough. But it’s one reason I’ve avoided the forums for a year or so.

  • Kind of a downer, but if nobody plays, then I get it...
I was saving Sea Dogs until last because honestly, I'm not great at PVP, but I guess now I don't have to even worry about it...
A real shame, since the cosmetics looked so cool.
Here's hoping there will be recolors or other reworks of that content down the line.

  • @kakashi-lord

My son is level 48.25 SD, he's gutted he hasn't finished it but he can still grind to 50 and the only thing he misses out on is the Good Boy Yeh?

Mainly his fault though, he's spent all his time on Destiny 2 and Fortnite in the last 6 months when a handful more sessions would have got him 50. The cutoff point for Level 5 makes more sense to me than the Level 50 cutoff, I think those who are able to reach 50 should be able to try until the bitter end.

  • While i never played arena as extensively as adventure, its still sad to see it go. I will always remember the fun times i had with my crew trying to play arena when we sucked at the game. And ive always wished we could get those ship skins in adventure. While i am sad to see it go and I feel for the small community who were passionate about arena I understand the decision and im just glad to have been there.

Dont cry because its over, smile because it happened.

  • Let no joyful voice be heard!

Let no man look up at the sky with hope!

And let this day be cursed by we who ready to wake..the pvp lords upon the sea!

  • @wagstr exactly. It’s a shame it’s a spring announcement with an instant cut off date. Usually they have a more considerate player friendly approach than that.

There is going to be a lot of forever lost cosmetics as well.

  • Hi !

I respect totally that The Arena comes to end, it's Rare decision but i really think that all Sea of Thieves players deserve to have the possibility to earn and unlock ALL titles, commendations and objects from Arena mode putting them in Normal/Adventure mode with new goals and missions.

I hope sincerely that Rare will consider this question.

    Have a nice day.

  • I've seen several other posts already, but I just want to also express my frustrations on how cumbersome it has been to grind arena to try to get to level 50, and now I'm within 3 levels and there was no warning that the game mode was going to be shut down, and as a result myself and many others will miss out on cosmetics and achievements without a notice to try to squeeze them in and earn them.

  • @meroviel The way this is working, a lot of people who never touched the mode and just bought levels will get all the rewards, but all those players in between who were working towards them by playing or holding off on buying them with recommendations because they didn't want to inflate their level for when they did actually play Arena are getting screwed by this decision.
