Using KB&M on Xbox console benefit?

  • Hello fellow sailors! I am tossing up the idea of trying to use a keyboard and mouse with my Xbox console. Does it offer any advantage over my controller?

  • I've heard people complain that there is a lag when using mouse and keyboard on console. Here is a video of someone 'fixing' it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZpcqMXYffM

Depends on the player. If you are comfortable using M/K then you should be fine. If not might seem very foreign. I use both on both platforms and tend to get more precise shots with M/K but that is me. My other crew members do better with Controllers.

  • It is not about profit, it is about comfort.
The important thing is to be able to use any input method, on Xbox on console and Xbox on PC.

  • @savagexxxone so outside of player skill/abilities, is there any advantage from a hardware performance standpoint? I'm trying to be competitive with PC players without having to purchase a PC HAHA. I am very skilled on my controller but I fear the speeds of the PC players is unmatched and just wondered if switching would help

Performance based on hardware, that would be hard to gauge. I would assume no on the face of it. Its all based on the latency between your xbox controller and use with M/K. They should be similar, but you may be able to do some things quicker with ease with a M/K. Such as flicks and turning. But honestly, controller in this game feels so good with the right settings.

There are no "speed" advantages form a PC to Xbox when you look at it from an input perspective. Everyone is in the same boat, but I do think a skilled PC player can get off some quicker aims at times and that's where they can excel. But I play both and not much difference for me in terms of PvP or even PvE when going from both systems. (Yes I do get more FPS with PC, but other than that quite similar).

You would have to test this out (skill base does make some big differences). Might be worth a try with a decent M/K. Even then with the new Xbox coming in 2020, you'll get PC type FPS off that system so that will close the gap even more.

  • I use both on my XBox.
The keyboard for accessing food and all the gear, the controller for all movements and actions

  • The advantage is aiming with full hand / arm compared to aiming with a little rubber stick.

  • Other than slightly sharper aim, ability to type, faster turning and more keys to bind to, it's not much different. I used to use kb/m the whole of last summer but switched back to controller for it's comfortability and at least on the og Xbox one it got really choppy fps wise when turning.

To summarize kb/m is better but drawbacks are: less comfortable to use, game sometimes feels like it can't keep up if turning fast(og xbox one) and learning curve higher imo for a non PC gamer.

I do the same. Mainly I stick with the controller but I use the mouse occasionally while I'm on the rowboat or the sails. Your aim can move much quicker with a mouse, and on the sails your aim doesn't snap back to center with a mouse.

  • PC player here.
I tried another game at a friend's house on the controller.
I have to admire anyone that has the hand/eye coordination to use one of those things. It is beyond my capabilities.
I find the mouse and keyboard to be far easier for me to handle.
I am a middle aged casual player on an aging laptop(30fps being its top capability). When you say competitive with PC players, you need to realize that is a false generality.
A teenager with a basic Xbox, who plays all the time, will walk all over a casual PC player like me.
Against one of these serious, day long, players with thousands of dollars worth of PC hardware, yeah, you might have an issue, though there are many Xbox players on here who will take those PC players down regularly.
If you have an Xbox that is fully kitted out with an SSD and you are adept at hand/eye coordination on the controller, I would definitely suggest you try the mouse and keyboard. You may find an advantage that puts you over the top.

  • I have a wireless keyboard and mouse and it's a little choppy and theres a slight delay.

I play with my controller and type with the wireless keyboard. If you have good aim and have faster sensitivity with your controller there isnt a massive difference between you and most PC players anyway. There is when your against good pc players though.

You will forever miss out on the controllers rumble function.
This means no longer will games feel alive at your fingertips.
Is it worth loosing out on all of those experiences?
This is a question you need to ask yourself also.
