Fix the sword combat, worst sword combat in any game I have played

  • @oxonamelessoxo it's clearly a building game, it's got planks in it.

  • @oxonamelessoxo when you play Rock/Paper/Scissors do you always pick Rock then go on the official RPS forum to laugh at noobs using scissors and whinge about paper being OP and it definitely needs a Nerf?

So remove the stunlock? How does a sword user stop someone with a blunderbus from 1 shotting them then?

I still to this day don't understand the stun-lock that we have. I get stunned by getting hit by pirates all of the time, but also all of the time, it doesn't seem to want to stun-lock when I hit them. The very scenario you outlined above happened to me just the other day - I caught an opposing pirate in the middle of a reload with my sword slashes, and yet he was still able to not only finish his reload, but also to 1-shot me.

Can someone please outline specifically what it is that causes stun-lock for me, because it seems like it's awfully inconsistent to me. Either that, or more likely, I just don't get it.

  • @galactic-geek it can be inconsistent.

The idea is that repeated slashes interrupts the firing, reloading and lunge power up.

I think you need to land 2 hits to interrupt though. Because 1 hit just doesn't do it every time, even against skeletons.

In saying that I've hit people with 3 slashes and a lunge before and they've survived with no bananas, so there may be some inconsistencies in when the server registers damage and applies debuffs like stun.

It's this sort of stuff that I hope they address in the combat rebalance. Make swords easy to use and reliable and also tone down the gunplay so that there's more reason to fight in melee and you have tactical considerations like when to use that pistol shot or whether they used theirs and if they have had time to reload.

  • So last night I got onto a sloop looking for two things. A willing crew to let me practice with that would not sink my boat, allowing for actual practice because I could respawn and try again. And second looking for a kraken encounter. I ended up with both. But sadly, the crew I found that was willing to practice, well, it didn't go well. They were decent enough chaps, and of course were pirates in the end as they did sink my ship, but they at least let me try a couple of times before finishing the job. I generally tried to stay with my block up. But I found I could not rotate or turn nearly as fast as I needed to actually place a hit on them. I tried moving from the block to lunges, and the only time I landed a hit was when one of the other crew was experimenting with blocking and stood there waiting for me. LOL

I think quite simply put, I did not learn much or feel I got any value in it and am now wondering if I am doomed to be average or worse than average at direct PvP.

  • @nofears-fun The combat is clunky and it could do with some small tweeks.

I’m sure the arena will make the issues abit more prevalent. But I think it would be nice if we had a duel emote where you could practice the sword fighting with a crew mate.
It would definitely make it easier than the way you had to go about it.

  • @nofears-fun Nah, not everyone is a master swordsman. I talk like I know what I'm at, but at least 50% of the time I derp it up completely, lunge myself off their boat, jump straight into a blunderbus or slash wildly at fresh air, while they just laugh and reload.

It's far too clunky and unpredictable to be an exact science. I love it because when it all comes together you feel like a total boss, but lets just say that it's not by coincidence that the PVP meta landed on just equipping 2 weapons that can put out enough reliable and predictable damage to kill people instantly.

That's why the double guns need to go. Nobody is going to choose to use a weapon that is great when it works but isn't reliable over a weapon that does 80% damage every time with no drawbacks.

Well I say nobody, I have been, but I haven't been having my most successful couple of weeks.

  • @nofears-fun When blocking your movement is slowed. If you're blocking an attack, simply use a forward sword dodge to go through the attacking opponent so you can immediately counter-attack them from behind.

  • What ever they do it will take time and tested to hell and back before they implement any of it. Nothing would be like an auto cut scene like assassin's creed or assassination like halo. So if you were hoping for that. Be disappointed. All this should be about is skilled sword play. We are missing some key ideas. Yes. Yet locking swords. Will most likely not happen. I hope for tweeks here and there. Maybe a way to apply a way to parry. Done with a well timed block. Equaling in a recoil/slight push back. Followed by an attack. Nothing would be automated. There would probably never be a disarming move. Due to fair play issues. Nor punching someone with your sword guard or open left hand punching during sword play. Yeah it may seem boring for now. Yet this is not the finished product people. They could add all this later on. Who honestly knows. Keep pileing on the ideas. Just realize the goal (fair play) and that they will cherry pick the ideas. Those ideas will take time. If you don't believe me ...Rowboats.

We already have this in the game. From an earlier post of mine:

We don't need a parry; we're pirates! It's better to hit them in the back. 😈

Besides, we already have not 1, but 2 great (admittedly pirate-flavored) repostes, or counter-attacks!

    1. When an opponent bounces off your block from their 3rd failed sword slash, simply switch weapons while still holding your block, and shoot them. This is the quickdraw technique in my handy combat guide. It allows you to immediately aim down the barrel off of the draw, and after that bounce, you get the space you need, and it's incredibly hard to miss. You don't actually need the opponent to bounce off to perform this technique; you can actually do it whenever you want - this just seems to be the best opportunity, IMO.

    2. Don't want to wait for the opponent to bounce off of your block? You don't have to! While still blocking your opponent's attacks, simply move torwards them and jump - this performs the sword dodge technique (also in my handy combat guide), which allows you to move through your opponent's space when you normally can't. Then once you're behind them, you can litterally stab them in the back. ✌😁

  • @galactic-geek Then the need for a parry is pointless because it's already there. We just have to pull it off?
    "I haven't played in a while. Sry."
What is the sword play lacking then?

  • @obliv1onzrock Not much; the only thing that seems to be lacking is the community's understanding of the sword mechanics that have been there since day 1. I've been trying to fix that with my handy combat guide, but it doesn't get anywhere near as much exposure as, say Summt1g and his antics that have hyped up the broken double-gun exploit lately.

@p0pc0rnh3mer01d bruh I'm a pirate legend lol but nice try

please dont flex that . it literally means nothing . I have carried about 20 ppl to legend also carried a new player to getting his overacheiver sails just before the deadline .. pirate legend does not mean good at the game unfortunately

  • @galactic-geek to YouTube! We must expose your knowleage to the world hence forth!!! We have no time to dilly dally!!! Swiftly now!!! Swiftly!!! 😁

  • @obliv1onzrock It takes me like 30 minutes to upload a 30-second video on my terrible connection. Do you really think I'll be able to do a 10-15 minute video? Not happening, buddy.

I show players (even PLs!) how to do the stuff in-game all of the time though. Perhaps if somebody I showed it to just happened to be streaming...?

    💡

  • I agree, more exposure to sword play mechanics would be nice. Watching a technique performed is a lot better then reading on how to emulate it.

Good for you, I'm saying I know how to play the game I know all the sword mechanics. This game is not rocket science

funny it took you until now to say something then . I've personally heard no other complaints about sword fighting since the game released, but if you take time out of your day to watch the dev videos he does say they are tweaking all combat including swordplay. #sohostile

  • @galactic-geek I've shared your combat guide on twitter so hopefully a few more people will see it

  • I feel the cutlass at least needs to have some of its cooldowns and penalties loosened up when missing.

    Well, shoot - I could've done that!

    ...but thanks. :)

  • Left this open as there was good advice and good discussion, but this has clearly degenerated into personal attacks. Locking thread now.
