Rowboat four-way "push" feature

  • I think the "push" feature at the stern of rowboats is great but another needs to be placed at the front of the boat as well.
Unless there is a backward row feature introduced to get out of sticky situations, but even then it would still be extremely useful.

    The problem:
I have seen a couple of people row themselves into tight spots rendering the boat useless from that point on. One guy rowed bow-first onto the beach and another wedged his raft into a small gap between rocks.
In both cases they swear that they were hitting the correct controls for the respective oar. But the more they tried it just got worse.

The inconsistency of the rowing mechanics makes the operator look like an idiot and everyone gets a little frustrated especially when the volcano is erupting, panic sets in and you are sitting ducks in a pool of boiling water.

To be able to point the boat in the desired direction before jumping in it would save a lot of anxious moments before certain death and potential mutiny between crew members.
Remember games are supposed to be fun not frustrating.
So how can we fix this to better the experience for all?

    The solution:
The operating of the lantern can be done from onboard the boat so that trigger can be made smaller (and perhaps a little higher) so it's unreachable from outside of the boat, allowing the front of the boat to have a "push back" trigger with the possibility of steering left or right as you push from the bow.
This would be done using your existing method of movement left or right once you have engaged in the "push back" trigger.
Take a step back to disengage from the push mode.

This probably would have been my first feedback suggestion as a FS pioneer and if it has already been suggested in the pioneer program then I can't understand why it was ignored.

  • @PersonalC0ffee How do you apply brake to an oar? Or do you simply mean to not move one while moving the other? I haven't had much play time lately to experiment...

  • @genuine-heather if you hold rb or lb and row u can make the boat do tight accurate turns

  • @ajm123 @Admiral-RRRSole
    Fantastic, thank you! :)

  • Another problem is a lot of rowboats are spawning facing a rock or barrier, preventing me from actually getting it off the island.

  • Thank you for pointing this out, @admiral-rrrsole

  • @genuine-heather If your using a controller, its right and left bumper. If you're on PC, it's the equipment selection and voyage map selection.

  • The rowboats do have a 'press X to push' when stood at the bow though, although it does seem a bit hit and miss

    LB is left brake
    LT is left oar
    RB is right brake
    RT is right oar

    Now I believe on PC;

    A is left oar
    Holding A is left brake
    D is right oar
    Holding D is right brake

So if you hold the left brake and use the right oar, you pivot the boat, making it easier to get out of situations.

    Neg.
    Q and E for left/right oar brake
    A and D for left/right oar row

    close though :)

I think the mechanics behind how the rowboat is "pushed" needs to be re-visited. Pressing the button once, and the boat moving on it's own (without character movement) doesn't "feel right," and (as already stated) doesn't give players a way to easily return the boat to water. Heck, I saw a rowboat yesterday that was stuck behind a geyser, and no matter how much I pushed the 'F' key, it wasn't going anywhere. Seconds later, I watched a rock turn it into a splintered mess. Frustrating? Definitely.

  • What is absurd is that we can only row in one direction.

  • @Dooby I have only seen it say "Push Boat" when at the bow without mention of the key binding. Each time I tried the bloody lantern turned on or off.

We had the same scenario of a rowboat spawned on a geyser although its stern was so close to the rock cliff face that the prompt to push never appeared no matter what angle I looked at it from. We continued our quest for the island and returned to that same spot but it wasn't there anymore.
