Larger ship, larger crew suggestion

  • How about if there is a larger ship with double crows nests 4 sails, and a crew of 6?
This ship can be specifically made for completion of long quests that can be potentially cut down in half with a crew that size. And not necessarily intended for chasing and destroying ships as this would make it unbalanced.

-The pros are the large crews
-The cons are it turns very slow and can be outmaneuvered by any ship
-Combat wise it will destroy you with its multiple canons and large crew if you are side by side but not good at chasing
Anyways just a simple idea to cut down quest times while adding variety to the game.

  • @eva1977 I have often said I would not want this as it would be doom for solo players. About the only upside I can think of to something like this would be the visuals of having actual cannons on the second level rather than doors that lead to nothing. Imagine the visuals of having 3 cannons on the top deck and three cannons on the mid deck all firing. That would be cool to see. But again, I think the ship and crew size would simply make it far to overpowering for everything else out there.

  • honestly would need to be segregated away from most other boats. the galleon is already a tank. and for the solo and duo sloops. 1v6 or 2v6 would just completely suck.

A so much options but need a bigger map to flee them warships :D

  • @captain-coel That's why i say it can be outmaneuvered.
-Say it is chasing you and you are on a sloop, all you have to do is turn to one side and you lost it since the time it takes for this bigger ship to turn you already turned multiple times.
Anyways I believe it can be balanced as I would love to see bigger ships in this game as well as bigger crews.

  • The only way I could see it possibly working is...

    • So big and heavy it takes a long time to get moving at full speed
    • So big and heavy it takes a long time to slow down and stop
    • So big and heavy it takes a long time to make a turn
    • Cannons don't swivel/aim as far/good as the other ships

All the other ships should be able to stay away and/or easily do circles around the Man-O-War.

Think of the downsides though. For instance, imagine you're doing it a fort or turning in loot. With so many players on a single ship, so many players could shoot out and swim to you and really become a bother.

  • The Galleon is big enough... maybe we could add a smaller ship and increase the crew size for all the ships by +1 person? I know there are only 3 sails and one ship-wheel, but there could be additional activities to make people busy - like cooking better food or crafting better planks / cannonballs etc..

  • @darkjedirebel If we had private servers, making progress in the game would be almost too easy. The risk of losing everything is what keeps a good portion of the community going.

  • @darkjedirebel said in Larger ship, larger crew suggestion:

@unpossibear there is no "progress" in the game. The only progress is a number getting higher and more access cosmetics. Not that big of a deal in the minds of most. This game isn't an RPG. It's more of a big stage to make stories

Bilge Rat. Gold Hoarders. Order of Souls Merchant Alliance. Athena's Fortune. Achievements. Commendations. There is plenty of progress.

  • @archaell Yes it is big enough and could do with 5 crew but i believe it would make it unstoppable reason why the bigger ship with bigger crew will have its downsides, also i agree lets have smaller ships but also bigger ones as variety is what this game lacks in my opinion.

  • I think a bigger ship would be perfect. I routinely have a bunch of people who want to play, and unfortunately some get cut out of the action.

Having a big ship that runs the server would also encourage smaller crews to ally up to defeat the large crew.

Adding a larger ship and increasing the server, and map size with new updates seems like the next logical step forward.

I agree..at this point..theres not much reason to make alliances. A big issue I see is having multiple massive boats on the same server. 8 crew per server right?? Well gallions can battle each other just fine but if there were 8 massive boats...battleing would be basically non existant due to manuvering contraints. If the extra extra large boat needs the entire space between two islands just to turn..docking and battles would be more of a pain in the butt than anything else.

  • Ok so to give solo players a fighting chance at these things how about adding an optional ghost crew to help them navigating the seas? kinda like the pirate ships and the AI, nothing to extreme just a few ones with limited spawns as an OPTION if he chooses to sail with a ghost crew and at a cost of hiring them.

That way a solo player can enjoy a galleon or brigantine without that much of a struggle while providing some defense against full crew ships.

  • @darkjedirebel said in Larger ship, larger crew suggestion:

@dislex-fx nope. Just because the there are different factions every player has access to the same thing. There is nothing that distinguishes a level 1 pirate from a level 30 other than a higher #. Same weapons same controls same everything. Except cosmetic differences and a different title tag. As I said this game is literally a BIG Stage for adventuring. Right now those adventurers are being interrupted by an over zealous crowd of pvp minded players. No co-op. You see other players and it's more often than not a bad sign. When the game changes to where either coop is encouraged and pvp is punished in some way or private servers, I think piling more potential bullies into one ship is a bad idea. 2-4 is bad enough.

I gave you examples of an actual progression system. You said "there is no "progress" in the game". I reminded you that there are commendations to chase. Your progress in these commendations does not start over each game session. I play for these commendations. I always have. Since beta.

"Right now those adventurers are being interrupted by an over zealous crowd of pvp minded players". You can take jabs at other play styles all you want, but we can only assume that when you decided to play Sea of Thieves, you knew players were allowed to attack other players. If you're having a tough time, find a crew or practice more.

If you're new to Sea of Thieves, I would recommend you keep playing and seeing how easy the game can become. I really wish the game would get harder. I mean, if you're always being attacked, I would have to ask how? It's not hard to never let another ship around you. If you want to play the PVE side of things, do that. Never let another ship near you. The map is plenty big enough to stay away from others, if you want to focus on PVE. The map is plenty small enough to find others, if you want the PVP side of it. This game is all about each session and the each adventure you make with your sessions. If a player is feeling his or her "adventurers are being interrupted", well, that player needs to adjust to the game.

  • 6v1 hmmmmmmmmmmmm poor sloops. and rip all noobs

  • @d4m0r3d well sure if they hey caught, but a large ship will have slow movement. They could just run.

  • @xxcaptmichaelxx yea but if a sloop sees them it will be like well damn i would love to fight but i just cant lol id get rekt, you know what i mean. it would suck imo seeing that and wanting to go get their loot and have some fun pvp but you would just get destroyed, but then again a big ship does sound fun and it would be epic to fight them even though they would probs win

  • There are ways of players and input fine tuning this idea but variety is always good in my opinion.

  • Sometimes ,it is already a hard task to get 4 Pirates working together if you jump into a Random crew . With six ,this would be a real heavy task. But like Mr No Fear comes to say , for the Solo player ,the six Pirates ship would be a real nightmare ...

But there is another reason why i wouldn't like to see bigger ships with 6 or 8 Pirates , No , not because i'm an anti social person , the more souls the merries , but there is another problem...i'm a foreigner , capable of understanding English, mostly ( * You wished , moron), but when i do get involved in bigger companies , like 8 or 10 people partychat or when we try to free up a server for Mr Sirio's Fortune games i get totally drowned by the many voices that talk towards eachother , in other words , i can't translate as fast as 10 Pirates talk...i fear that Pirates , like me , would become excluded from bigger ships ,out of fear to lose track of the conversation and miss important orders to keep the ship afloat in battle situations...
But that being said , that doesn't mean that bigger ships aren't allowed but i just fear that the imbalance between the Solo Slooper and the 6 to 8 Pirates crew ships would become almost impossible to beat or even escape, since they can shoot maybe 4 persons to yer Sloop and still be able to run their ship smoothly...

  • @eva1977 After thinking about this, unless you changed the server population mechanic so that only ships of this new size occupied the server, or maybe this ship and galleon, it would probably be something that would cause a lot of problems.

    • I think that PvP people would try to migrate to this new ship type as they see more fire power as pleasing. But, if you countered the shear fire power by slowing the ship down, making it harder for you to catch anyone, then you would end up frustrating that PvP crowd as PvE players could easily avoid this new behemoth.
    • You would never be able to compete for a skull fort again if one of these beasts were on your server, unless you formed alliances to work against them.
    • Because of the slower speed and maneuverability you would create a large ship of pirates that become bored faster as it would take more time to sail between destinations.
    • The obvious advantages over smaller crews and ship for shear fire power and number of pirates would be very overpowering. Even if you are slower, you could simply angle the ship and fire 4 pirates to your prey, with a larger percentage chance one of them can board and drop anchor.
    • New players trying out the game would be doomed trying to play on one of these ships, or playing solo against one.
    • It would create more "game is toxic" or "game is unfair" to solo or two man crews. Heck you would add to these current complaints from 3 man crews as they now would be outmatched 2-1 as well.

But then there is the benefits

    • The ship would be great for PvE people though, as they can have a ship that is somewhat easier to defend against other PvP people, and you have more pirates to defend/counter attack with.
    • Second level of cannons. Man I want to see second level cannons firing away with the top deck cannons also going after it.
    • Easier to fight OoS waves with all those peeps.
    • PvE would be easier overall, especially against the current level of AI threats on the open ocean.

But in all honesty, while there are fun aspects to think about for this larger ship, I just think it would be too big of a game changer for the larger population. However, I say that and think to myself, if you go with a new game match making mechanic as I mentioned above, then maybe it would be a great addition.

  • @eva1977

Unfortunately with the current system in place this would not be a good idea. Rare had already stated that they were pushing the server size with the current number of players and ships already in one server. If you would add even more players and larger ships to the already limited server capability, there would be longer load times, more crashes, more bugs, and just an overall worse experience. That in addition to the above comments' concerns on fairness makes me weary of the idea. I do think it's a good idea but i'm sure rare has likely by now already considered decided not to implement. What I would be in favor of before this however, is alternate ship types for the same size parties that already exist.

Then bam! Motivation to ally up!
This was the intended idea for sloops to go up against galleons in the first place. Why not a bigger ship?

  • @xxcaptmichaelxx they wanted sloops to ally up with galleons? and what if the big ship doesnt want to ally up, why would they want to if they are normal pirates they would be like lets grab a gunpowder barrel from the crows nest and go rek them

  • @captain-coel said in Larger ship, larger crew suggestion:

I actually have no problem with Galleon crews when I play solo, regardless of the ship I am using.

  • So for a skull fort that's been done by a duo on a Sloop, this ship comes along drops off its contingent of five marines and keeps one to sail away. salughters all.

Galleon parked up at an island, ship comes by fires five onto deck, slaughters all....

It's not relevant about hunting ships, most PvP today is at Islands and forts where ships are caught out, most now know how to escape any other ship in the open sea.

    Not balanced at all.

  • I would like to see this in PvP. Galleons and This War Ship you're talking about in dedicated server's for bigger crews.

  • @corleththefey Isn't that what already happens in the game?

Besides what is the difference between a 2 galleon or even 3 galleon with full crew alliance?

This ship does not have to be a monster only a way of getting 6 people on the same team plus if they do it you can as well, as for solo sloops they are currently vulnerable to alll threats in sea of thieves this is just one more.

  • I don't know about you guy ,but I'm a heavy PvP pirate and I solo alot. If they were to add a bigger slower ship with a large crew I would gladly hunt them down in my sloop. I have taking down galleons Solo. It's far easier to do wtih the introduction of CCBs. The way i see it the bigger they are tye faster they sink as the more holes i can put in them.

So when you guy try to speculate on what PvPer's might or might not do i suggest you ask them first. I love the idea of adding more ships both big and small. I have commanded large fleets of ships and belive me the larger the crew the harder it is to manage a boat. So long as you can defend from boarders and have the right supplies a solo sloop can sink any ship.

Let's get more life on the ocean!

  • Yes, I want this too, would love to sink a 6-man ship.
